FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Kia ora koutou,

It has been another busy week with students learning and teachers in the throes of report writing.

Thank you to families who hosted students from Ritsumeikan Junior High School. We appreciate you opening your homes to our International Guests. You must have been incredible hosts, as many tears were shed on Tuesday morning when they left.

Summer Uniform: Please ensure that your child is in the correct summer uniform. This includes hats and sandals. Over the past few weeks we have given out over $700 worth of sandals to students. If you have old sandals or hats or uniforms, that your child no longer fits and that you wouldn't mind donating please send them to school with your child. This will help to replenish our stocks and help us to support students in need.

Bike: A blue and white bike was left in the Lodge Ave carpark garden last Monday, does it belong to you?

Congratulations to the PCT (Police Competency Test) Challenge team who won the BOP event and will be representing our region in the National final in Wellington in a few weeks’ time. Good luck to our jump jammers. All the best to the MMI and Omanu Jump Jam Teams competing in the North Island finals tomorrow. NEW SICKBAY NOTES Ma te wa Lisa Morresey FOUND BIKE

Written Responsive Feedback

In term 3 and the first part of term 4, all classes at MMI have been writing to responders. This programme has now ended for 2016 and many classes have been able to meet their responders in person.

Written responsive feedback could not happen without the support of our community, and the students and staff would like to thank everyone who has participated and made this such an enjoyable and valuable learning experience.

INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT NEWS

On Tuesday morning, we farewelled our group from Ritsumeikan, who arrived on 16 October. This group was absolutely delightful and we all enjoyed having the students and their two teachers in our school. While here, the group participated in class activities, specialist classes, Kiwi Can, as well as learning a haka and poi.

Our homestay families also enjoyed hosting these students and there were many tears shed as the group departed yesterday, from boys and girls of both schools. I am sure several of the friendships formed will continue into the future.

I would like to express the school’s gratitude to everyone who has made our visitors warmly welcome, from our families who have introduced our visitors to many new experiences and who accepted them into their homes, our students who have been great buddies and to our staff who have included them into class programmes.

Having short term and long term international students in our school has many social, cultural and economic benefits, but we all have to work to make it a success for everyone. Mt Maunganui Intermediate School, 21 Lodge Avenue, Mt Maunganui 3116 Phone 07 575 5512 Email: [email protected]

INTERNATIONAL DEPARTMENT NEWS continued

On 28 November, we will have our last group for the year, this time from Kyoto, Japan. This group of 20 are here for only 8 days, a short time for such a long journey. Thank you to those who have offered to host these students. As soon as the agent approves my placements, I will send home the letters and photos the students have sent.

Next year, we will start the year with 10 long term students, from South Korea, China and Germany. We will also, for the first time, host a number of groups in February – March, as well as our regular groups, who are already competing for time slots later in the year. At the beginning of term 1, 5 – 19 February, we have been asked to host a group of 6 boys from Korea. We also have groups from China and Japan shortly after that. If you know now that you would be interested in hosting a student from one or more of these groups, can you please let me know. We will need to have homestays organized before the end of this term.

The end of year is fast approaching and it will be with sadness that we will have to farewell some of our long term Korean students, who will be moving on to college or returning to their family back home. These students have been fantastic members of our school, who have achieved great success academically, in sporting events and as members of different cultural activities. They have fitted so well into to our school culture, while bringing a greater diversity to our school community. Over the coming years we hope to continue to build our numbers of long term international students and will continue to broaden our scope across different countries.

Over the next few weeks, many of our long term international students are involved in activities outside the classroom, including Waimarino, adventure camps, Adrenalin Forest and trips to the museum in Katikati, as part of their learning. Photos will be greatly appreciated.

WATER POLO REPORT OPEN MIXED TEAM NORTH ISLANDS-AUCKLAND By Brenda Anderson

The Mount Mixed Water Polo Team competed for 4 days last week at the Yr7/8 North Islands Competition. There were 12, A Grade teams fighting it out for medals and recognition in this very prestigious event.

We won our 1st 3 games and drew the 4th, against Murrays Bay. We needed to win or draw our next game to be top of our pool OR lose by 2 or less to go through 2nd. Next came Sacred Heart, who were unbeaten at this stage.

We fought hard and were down by 3 when Waggie scored in the final seconds!! We lost 7- 5 but that was good enough to get us through to Top 4. We then played Aquinas in our Semi Final, which is never fun!!
