WOOD GREEN NEWS DEPARTMENT Welcome to the First Edition of the WGS PE Newsletter

The Physical Education Department had a very positive first half of the year in our extra- curricular fixtures. We have had great success in rugby, girl’s football, hockey, swimming and . We finished strongly within the WOSSP partnership and this is because of the commitment shown by those students who have the drive and passion for their chosen sport representing the school. We continue this term with boy’s football and girl’s and then the summer term will see involvement in athletics, , and tennis We are regularly providing leaders for primary school partnership events and the students involved in sports leadership within school are always praised for their organisation and conduct. We now look forward to going forward to the School Games in the girl’s hockey, girl’s football and U14 girls swimming. We wish these teams every success and will report the results in due course. Please see below some mid-season reports from a selection of our captains. Mrs Smith, Head of Girls PE

“So far Wood Green hockey team have been undefeated. We have been very successful in all our matches against other schools. Wood Green went to the WOSSP tournament at Henry Box School, where we thrashed every school, beating Bartholomew 4-0, Henry Box 2-1, Burford 3-0 and Chipping Norton 2-0. As a result of us winning the tournament, we have gone through to the School Games Finals. Hopefully we will go out and play even stronger than we did before. We have lots of players in our team and we work hard together. We have two vice captains Ellen Carpenter and Year 8 Girls Hockey Team Eleanor Perks.” Tilly Gidney Year 8 Captain

Year 8 Girls Football Team

The Girls Football team have been undefeated this season until the County Cup Final where we lost 2-1 to . We took part in the WOSSP football tournament and managed to win so we are now through to the School Games Finals. Some of the girls play for a team outside of school but for those that don’t they will catch up in school training sessions.” Sophia Cox Year 8 Captain

Year 9 Boys Football Team

The Year 9 boys had a mixed season with some good wins but also a number of defeats. We trained hard but need to work on some elements of the game to make sure we are stronger next year. We have two captains one for the forwards and one for the backs and we have had to make sure players are available and encourage them to come to training. We also had to present to the year group in assembly how we were getting on and to try to encourage others to get involved in the game. There are many other opportunities other than playing, and as part of my Duke of Edinburgh Award, I started to help coach the year 7 team. Ben Smith Year 9 Forwards Captain & Jack Dobbs Year 9 Backs Captain.

We are all as captains now involving ourselves in different sports this term and this will also be the same into the summer term. We hope that some of us will be nominated as captains for the upcoming activities and we look forward to reporting our future success with you. Wood Green Sports Team
