BCFC Week Ten Summary By Ryan Watters, BCFC Media Coordinator

Thanksgiving weekend saw the final games of the 2011 regular season and a showdown for first and third places in the Football Conference.

The first place showdown between the 9-0 and the 8-1 had all the makings of a classic...it didn’t turn out that way.

Instead the five time BCFC champion Raiders flexed their muscle, completely dismantling the hometown Sun in a 35-3 victory to conclude an undefeated season.

Quarterback Jordan Yantz finished 15 of 28 for 237 yards and threw three touchdown passes finishing the year with 35, tying a conference record. Yantz would find Michael Schaper twice and Whitman Tomusiak for majors.

On the ground the Raiders were led by BCFC leading rusher Jordan Botel who carried 16 times for 134 yards, most of which in the second half. The Raiders would gain a total of 177 yards on the ground.

Kicker Mark Mueller was perfect hitting on all three attempts from 21, 33 and 35 yards respectively.

Defensively the Raiders held the Sun to just a 25 yard field goal and would force two turnovers including a fumble recovery by Dylon Chapdelaine on the first play from scrimmage. James Riley picked off a pass and had three tackles while Ranji Atwall had six tackles.

The Raiders finish undefeated at 10-0 and have home field throughout the playoffs beginning with a semi-final matchup with the 5-5 Westshore Rebels on Saturday afternoon.

The Sun offence was virtually non-existent against the stingiest defence in the Canadian Junior Football League. Quarterback Jeremy Mraovic would compete 11 of 28 for 149 yards and an interception. Mike Friend was his favourite receiver catching six passes for 88 yards.

The ground assault would see the Sun rush for 172 yards; Alex Bradley totally 111 of those on 13 carries. Sun kicker Steven Shott returned to the line-up for first time this season connecting from 25 yards out for the lone Sun points.

The Sun defence was on the field for the majority of the game as Robbie Yochim made five tackles and had an interception for the only turnover of the game for the home side. Brennan Van Nistelrooy would make five tackles and Steven Doege had four tackles and a sack; his conference leading 11th.

The Sun finish 8-2 and will host the 5-5 Langley Rams in a semi-final on Sunday afternoon at the Apple Bowl. Saturday afternoon it was a showdown for third place in Westshore as the Rebels would host the Langley Rams....and it was all visitors in a 42-14 Ram win.

The Rams would compile 355 yards on offense as backup quarterback Jon Roney would lead the way finishing 12 of 25 for 231 yards and a touchdown to Kyle Albertini. Nick Downey caught five balls for 99 yards and Jerod Zaleski had three catches for 57 yards.

On the ground the Rams would be very effective rushing for 137 yards, led by Albertini who had 13 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns to compliment his three catches and 56 yards. Joe Patko also had two touchdowns on the ground, on just two carries.

Kicker Nick Naylor would add to the scoring hitting from 32 and 40 yards out and was 4-4 in coverts.

The Rams defence slowed the Rebels ground attack holding them to just 170 yards. Carlo Graziano had five tackles and two knockdowns while Patko recovered a fumble. Seven Rams would record a multi-tackle game.

The Rams finish third in the conference and will travel to the Okanagan for a semi-final matchup on Sunday afternoon

The Rebels fall for the third time this season on home turf. Their 1-2 punch on the ground, running back Greg Morris was held to just 66 yards on 11 carries while Niles Goguen also had 11 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Cat Todorovich finished with just eight completions in 25 attempts for 143 yards. Goguen caught five passes for 59 yards to lead the way.

The only other scoring for the Rebels were two field goals from kicker Quinn Van Gylswyck who hit from 36 and 50 yard out.

The Rebels injury riddled defence was led by Chris Pastro who had five tackles and two assists. Jacob Junker had four tackles and a knockdown while Samuel Narkaj had a tackle, a sack and a fumble recovery. Justin Perrie also had a sack.

The would win their final game of the season beating the Chilliwack Huskers 29-13 at home.

The Broncos would be led by their ground game compiling 259 yards. Joel Mukendi carried the rock 16 times for 79 yards and had two touchdowns. Mike McMaster had 13 carries for 106 yards and a major. Cory Constantin chipped in with five rushes for 42 yards.

Quarterback Jesse Neufeld finished six of 12 for 120 yards finding Don Calvert twice for 59 yards and Devin Csincsa twice for 35 yards.

The Broncos “D” forced three as Shayne Arthurs had two along with four tackles. Scott Nelson had five tackles to lead the club while Clayton Ludba had three tackles and a pick.

The Broncos finish the season a disappointing 2-8, both wins coming at the hands of the Huskers. The Broncos would name defensive end Tyler Lee their MVP, Mike McMaster their offensive MVP and Drew Makortoff their defensive MVP at their annual team awards banquet.

The Chilliwack Huskers are held winless for the second consecutive season.

Quarterback Adann Hendrickson finished 16 of 35 for 270 yards and a touchdown to lead the offence. He would find nine different receivers including Ben Skerret five times for 68 yards. Matt Dickensheid caught a 28 yard pass for a touchdown. Hendrickson would also lead the ground game running 13 times for 96 yards and a score.

Curtis Schindel had a terrific game making nine tackles and assisting on two others. Both James Williams and Jayson Bates in his final BCFC game had eight tackles.

The Huskers finish 0-10 and have begun rebuilding for 2012.

BCFC Players of the Week

The British Columbia Football Conference is pleased to announce their “VidSwap.com Players of the Week” for Week Ten of the 2011 season.

The Langley Rams clinched third place on Saturday night thanks in large part to the contributions of the BCFC Offensive Player of the Week; running back Kyle Albertini. The 19 year old would single handily score more times than the opposition, scoring three touchdowns enroute to the Rams victory. Albertini would carry the rock 13 times for 106 yards and record two touchdowns. He also caught three passes for 56 yards and had a major. It’s the first award of the year for the Mission, BC native.

In the final game of the season for the Kamloops Broncos defensive back Shayne Arthurs turned in a performance that named him the BCFC Defensive Player of the Week. It’s the first award for Arthurs this season.

The Langley Rams blowout victory on Saturday night in Westshore saw a number of terrific individual efforts including the play of the BCFC Special Teams Player of the Week, Rams kick Nick Naylor. The rookie 19 year old accounted for 10 of the Rams 42 points hitting two field goals from 32 and 40 yards out respectively. He would also tally four converts and seven punts for 251 yards pinning the Rebels deep. The Abbotsford native would also record six kick-offs for 353 yards. PFC Week Nine in Review By Tom Hallick, PFC Media Coordinator

Edmonton Huskies 31 @ Saskatoon Huskies 22 – October 9 @ Griffiths Stadium

The first game of the season’s final day pitted a Huskies club who wanted to end the season on a high note and at the same time ditch a nasty streak of 31 games without a win. For the Hilltops, it was meaningless as far as the standings went, but for Head Coach Tom Sargeant, it was a chance for him & his staff to give his second-stringers a good look at how they perform under fire.

Saskatoon got off to a 12-0 first quarter lead as Zach Schmidt made good on a 34-yard field goal and Regan Schuler scored on a 15-yard run in the game’s first five minutes and picked up another pair of points as Huskie punter Jonathan Heidebrecht conceded a safety rather than punt into a stiff breeze.

Schuler would add a second touchdown & Schmidt would hit on his second three-pointer on the day to up the advantage to 22-0. The Huskies would get a boost of momentum as Heidebrecht connected on a 52-yard field goal to put his club on the board with under 2 minutes to go in the quarter. Edmonton would find the end zone as Akeem Brown scored on a 21-yard touchdown reception from Ben Gorniak who returned to the lineup after sustaining a concussion a few weeks ago, with 56 seconds to go to cut the Saskatoon lead to 22-10 at halftime.

The Hilltops would use their backups in the second half and for the most part had trouble moving the ball as the offense struggled and Edmonton came on strong as following a Heidebrecht field goal, Skyler Sargeant, who ran the rock for 110 yards on 19 carries, scored nearly 5 minutes into the frame to cut the deficit down to 2. A punt single shaved it to a 1-point game. The Huskies would grab the lead for good as Heidebrecht nailed his third field goal of the afternoon from 41 yards out. The Huskies put the wraps on the win as Devin Kondro picked up a 7-yard major to sew up their first win in nearly 4 years.

Winnipeg Rifles 35 @ Calgary Colts – October 9 @ McMahon Stadium

Sunday’s regular season finale turned out to be a Wild West style shootout that ended in an equally wild result as the Rifles & Colts played to a rare 35-35 tie.

The Colts bolted out of the blocks as they put up 21 points in a span of 4:07 early in the game. Calgary tailback Cuong Thai Lieu dashed 10 yards for the game’s first score a little over 2 minutes into the opening frame. Calgary’s second score came courtesy of Mac Sarro as he scored his first of two touchdowns on the day as he took in a 4-yard pass from Clayton Masikewich. Winnipeg would fumble the ensuing kickoff and would pay for it one play later as Chris Huband scored on a 16-yard run at 6:26 to make it 21-0.

Brad Mikoluff would put Winnipeg on the board with a 33-yard field goal at 11:38 to make it 21-3. The Colts would make it a four score frame as DJ Whetton scored on a 6-yard run to make it a 28-3 game after 15 minutes.

Mikoluff would get a 44-yard punt rouge and 36-yard field goal, but rattle another 36-yarder off the uprights to keep the score at 28-7 Colts at halftime.

The third quarter turned out to be the Ryan Marsch show as he rallied the Rifles by throwing 4 touchdown strikes as Matt Lariviere reeled in his 8th touchdown reception of the year two minutes into the quarter. Derek Dean would cash in with a 1-yard touchdown score three-and-a-half minutes after that. Alex Vitt hauled in a 7-yard strike to even it at 28-28; and then on the final play of the period, Marsch found Kurt Goodrich for an 11-yarder to give Winnipeg a 35-28 lead. The pass to Goodrich was Marsch’s 31st of the campaign, equalling Darryl Leason’s PFC single-season record for passing touchdowns with 31.

Both offenses would be stymied in the fourth and final frame until Masikewich & Sarro hooked up for the second time on a 14-yard connection with 1:56 remaining. That was set up courtesy of a completion on a third-and-seven gamble to Sarro which went for 14 yards. Marsch and company drove into Calgary territory, but Colts defensive back Skylar Pinchak intercepted him at the 18, thwarting Marsch’s attempt at breaking Leason’s mark. Marsch did throw for 393 yards, giving him 3,030 on the season. The 3,030 yards is a new Canadian Junior Football League single-season record, which surpassed the previous mark of 2,988 registered by Victoria (Now Westshore) Rebels pivot Nate Cote in 2007.

The Rifles end the season at 3-4-1 in 4th spot and head to Saskatoon to play the Hilltops in a semi-final contest next Sunday at Griffiths Stadium on the University of campus. The Colts host Regina in the other semi-final.

Regina Thunder 53 @ 37 – October 9 @ Clarke Park

The last matchup of the regular season featured the Thunder who came into the game riding a 3-game winning streak against a Wildcat side that thrashed their co-tenant Huskies by a 51-25 count 8 days ago.

Wyatt Catley would pass for 5 touchdowns and 372 yards. Kolten Solomon would return to the Thunder lineup and catch 9 passes for 135 yards and score a pair of touchdowns. Clay Cooke would record 6 catches for 105 yards and a touchdown, while Mike Scheinbein had 5 grabs for 88 yards and a major. Brady Keller hauled in a touchdown pass as well. Running back Nick Brown led the Thunder with 84 yards along the ground as Regina had quarter leads of 14-7, 25- 16 and 39-16.

Wildcats pivot Jonathan Olson went 12 of 24 for 242 yards and tossed for three scores. Receiver Andrew Johnson had a game-high 148 yards on 7 receptions and a major. Justin McEvoy led the Wildcats ground attack with 43 yards on 9 carries. PFC Players of the Week

These are the www.VidSwap.com PFC Players of the Week for Week 9 of the 2011 regular season.

Ryan Marsch – Quarterback – Winnipeg Rifles For the third time in the 2011, the 3rd-year Rifles pivot lays claim to the Offensive Player of the Week award with another sensational performance in Sunday’s 35-35 tie in Calgary. Marsch would complete 31 of 49 passes for 393 yards and throw for 4 major scores. The 393-yard day gave him a season total of 3,030 yards which is a new CJFL single season passing yards record. While the 4 touchdown tosses ties the PFC single-season record for touchdown passes with 31.

Skylar Pinchak – Defensiveback – Calgary Colts The 4th-year defensive back from Cardston, Alberta had a phenomenal regular season finale in Sunday’s 35-35 tie with the Winnipeg Rifles. Pinchak had 5 tackles, 3 assisted stops, a special teams tackle, a special teams assist, 1 pass knockdown and a fumble recovery. However, his biggest play of the day was a clutch interception on the game’s final play as he picked off a Ryan Marsch pass at the Colts 18. That would thwart a potential Winnipeg game-winning drive. The 24 point afternoon gave Pinchak 88 defensive points, which places him 5th in the conference.

Tylor Henry – Returner – Edmonton Wildcats Henry would have a busy afternoon in Sunday’s 53-37 home loss to the Regina Thunder as he returned 3 kickoffs for 118 yards; one of those was a season-best 64-yard run back. He added 6 punt returns for 73 yards with his longest return going for 20 yards. Tylor finishes the PFC season 3rd in kickoff returns with 13 for 324, averaging 24.9 yards/return and 6th in punt returns with 18 for 140 yards.

PFC Semi Final Sunday Preview By Tom Hallick, PFC Media Coordinator

Winnipeg Rifles (3-4-1) @ (7-1) – Noon – October 16 @ Griffiths Stadium in Potash Corp Park

The Winnipeg Rifles make their seemingly annual semi-final trip to Saskatoon. This will be the third time in four years & fourth overall time they battle the Toppers. The Toppers have won all 4 playoff pairings including a 59-25 decision in 2010.

The Rifles come into the playoffs with the best offensive unit in the conference with pivot Ryan Marsch at the controls coming off a record-setting regular season, having thrown for 3,030 yards, a brand-new CJFL single-season record and tying the conference mark for touchdown passes with 31. Alex Vitt, Derek Dean & Matt Lariviere finished 1st, 2nd & 4th respectively in receiving yards. Don’t be at all surprised to see tailback Martin Hovi bounce back on Sunday after having a rough last few games. He rushed for 237 yards on 21 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns as Winnipeg nearly made a mammoth comeback in the ’10 semi-final.

The Hilltops will be undoubtedly in a surly frame of mind after the Edmonton Huskies knocked them from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 31-22 come-from-behind win. The first-stringers led by quarterback Chase Bradshaw looked very impressive last Sunday as he passed for 125 yards in about 25 minutes of work and Regan Schuler scored a pair of six- pointers as they charged out to a 22-0 lead. When Head Coach Tom Sargeant gave the keys to the second stringers, the car so to speak, ended up going in reverse as the Huskies scored 31 straight points to get the win.

The key to a Winnipeg upset is as usual, Ryan Marsch & company. This game will likely be another air show between Marsch & Bradshaw. If Winnipeg is to stay step-for-step with the Toppers, they must get stellar play from their defense. They can ill afford to spot Saskatoon 20+ points as has been the case over the last two seasons.

Saskatoon, as stated before will be a surly bunch and will go for the knockout blow early. PFC rushing champion Regan Schuler will be a huge piece of the puzzle. If Bradshaw connects with his receivers as he did 2 weeks ago in a 48-28 road win against the Rifles, they’ll punch their ticket to the PFC title game. Regina Thunder (5-3) @ Calgary Colts (5-2-1) – 1:00 pm – October 16 @ McMahon Stadium

This will be the second year in a row that the Thunder & Colts meet one another in the semi-finals, but this year they’ll lock horns at McMahon Stadium. The Thunder won last year’s semi-final clash 17-6 at as the teams played through a fierce wind.

Regina enters the playoffs on a 4-game roll, which includes an impressive 53-37 win over the Edmonton Wildcats on the road last Sunday. Quarterback Wyatt Catley threw for 372 yards and 5 scores in the win and finished 2011 with 2,080 yards along with 19 touchdowns.

Receiver Clay Cooke led his club in receiving yards with 631 yards and 6 touchdowns. Kolten Solomon returned from injury and picked up right from where he left off; reeling in 9 passes for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns. He finishes the regular season with 448 yards.

The Thunder ground game is seemingly split between Thomas Ringlein & Nick Brown at the moment. Ringlein racked up 446 yards on the year, while Brown had 230.

Calgary is led by a steady ground game with Cuong Thai Lieu pounding the rock as had 574 yards and 6 touchdowns. The 574 yards ranked 4th in the conference and 6 touchdowns placed him 1 back of Regan Schuler. Colts pivot Clayton Masikewich had an up and down campaign throwing for 1.413 yards and 13 scores.

The Colts defense has some of the best in the conference as linebacker Steve Dereniwski was runner-up in the defensive points standings with 104.5. Defensive back Skylar Pinchak placed 5th with 85 and had a clutch interception against Winnipeg, which preserved the home playoff date. Defensive end Prince Baffoh led the PFC in quarterback sacks, racking up 7.5.

If anything, this semi-final is a toss-up as this one looks to be a defensive battle on paper as both defenses are very strong as the Colts found out about Regina’s crew when they last met on October 2nd at Mosaic Stadium. Calgary was held to a paltry 99 yards of offense that day.

The key to a Colts win will be if the offense has a solid all-around game, they should advance. But if Catley & company come out with guns a-blazing for the Thunder, Regina will be on their way to the PFC title game.

Former Saskatoon Hilltops player named to Eskimos Wall of Honour

Edmonton Eskimos linebacker Larry Wruck had his name added to the club’s Wall of Honour at during a special halftime ceremony on Monday, October 10th.

Larry Wruck played 12 seasons (1985 -1996) with the Esks, won two Grey Cups (1987 & 1993) and is second on the club’s all-time list with 647 defensive tackles.
