VINCENT D. GANNON Lt. Col., USAF, Ret. Passed away Oct. 31, 2004. James F. Gary came to Honolulu in 1967 and transformed the old Honolulu Gas Co. Ltd. into Pacific Resources Inc., a Fortune 500 company that developed a second oil refinery on O'ahu. In the decades that followed his arrival, Gary helped guide a who's who of Island businesses, organizations and institutions and served as a University of Hawai'i regent from 1982 to1989. Later in life, Gary was stricken with Alzheimer's disease. Yesterday morning, Aug 5, 2004 Gary died at his home in Kahala at the age of 83. Services are pending. "Jim Gary came to Hawai'i and was able to bring about change to a sleepy, laid-back economy," said former Gov. George Ariyoshi, who — as a director for Honolulu Gas Co. — helped recruit Gary from Seattle to run the company as its president. "He took what was really a local gas company and changed the face of it to make us more involved in the international oil world. I also liked the fact that he came from the outside, but he immediately recognized that he needed to develop talent to win over the community here. He made it clear that he wanted to find talent here and develop talent here. That's one of his lasting accomplishments." In addition to several Mainland and international companies, Gary served as a director, trustee, president or chairman of several Hawai'i organizations, including the Aloha United Way (president and chairman of the board); Better Business Bureau; Boy Scouts of America Aloha Council (president); Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i (chairman); East-West Center International Foundation Board; Chaminade University Board of Regents; Hawaii Employers Council (chairman); Hawaii Community Foundation (chairman and president); Hawaii Community Reinvestment Corp.; Honolulu Symphony Society; Hawaii Loa College board of trustees; Kamehameha Schools advisory committee; St. Andrew's Priory School board of trustees; and Research Corporation of the University of Hawai'i (chairman). Gary also was a director of Dole Food Co. Inc. "Jim Gary was both a visionary business executive and an outstanding community leader who played a vital role in Hawai'i's transformation from a quiet, moonlit tourist destination to a bustling, international business center," said U.S. Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, D-Hawai'i. "Through his tireless hard work, he ended Hawai'i's dependence on imported petroleum by establishing a refinery in the Islands that became a key supplier for the Department of Defense in the Pacific. As a member of the University of Hawai'i's Board of Regents, he was a strong advocate for higher education and high technology. Jim also contributed his unique skills and experiences to numerous community organizations. ... "Hawai'i was most fortunate to have Jim Gary guide it during an important period in its history." James Frederick Gary was born in Chicago on Dec. 28, 1920, the son of an Army officer who later worked as a professional executive for the Boy Scouts. Gary considered careers in medicine and engineering at Haverford College in Pennsylvania and graduated in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science degree. But after graduation, Gary went to work for DuPont to help the company open a munitions plant in Oklahoma during World War II. After a few months, Gary resigned to enlist in the Army in 1942. He underwent parachute training in Georgia, became an instructor and then shipped out as a replacement with the 11th Airborne Division in the Philippines to prepare for a U.S. invasion of Japan. The subsequent American bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki meant Gary touched Japanese soil only as part of the U.S. occupation force. After the war, Capt. Gary found himself stuck in Fort Lewis, Wash., for a weekend, waiting for paperwork to clear. During his wait, Gary called up longtime family friends from Pennsylvania who had since moved to Seattle. "I'd known him since I was 8 years old," the former Helen Gellert said. "He was always nice to me. But he liked my older sister better. He paid more attention to her because he was closer to her age." Although Gary had known Helen since childhood, the dynamic of their relationship changed during that weekend in Seattle. "I was just home from college and he got out of the car and he looked at me and I looked at him," she said. "My mother said, 'Aren't you going to shake hands?' But I just fell in love with him. I've known him all of my life and you don't fall in love with somebody you've known all of your life. But I did." They stayed in Seattle as Gary started his business career with the Seattle Gas Co. Then in 1967, on April Fool's Day, they moved to Honolulu so Gary could take over Honolulu Gas Co. Building a second refinery on O'ahu meant getting approvals, capital and sources of crude oil that sent Gary all over the Mainland, particularly New York and Washington, D.C. As Gary expanded Honolulu Gas Co. into Pacific Resources Inc. and its 22 subsidiaries, the company grew from an $8-million-a-year enterprise to $1.7 billion, making it No. 225 on the Fortune 500 list. The constant travel took a toll on Gary's time with his wife and their four children. At one point, Gary spent one week out of every three away from home, Gary once said in an interview. "He traveled to Indonesia, Malaysia, worked with Shell Oil Co. in England and the French oil company," said his wife, Helen. "He's been to Saudi Arabia, you name it." The constant travel, Ariyoshi said, is "a sacrifice that most business people have to make. But he wasn't estranged and it didn't affect his family. He was a good family person." The Garys' oldest son, David, died three years ago in a car accident in Dallas, Texas. Cdr. James C. Gilbert (USN, Ret.) Age 75, of Honolulu, died on December 3, 2004, in El Centro, California, from a massive stroke. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Doris; his sons, David (Joyce) and Mark (Shena); daughter, Sally (Dennis) Derrick; grandchildren Amber Derrick and Christian Gilbert, all of whom live in Hawaii; and his brother, Lang (Wanda) Gilbert of Covington, VA. ELLEN YOSHIE HAMAMOTO GILMAN Age 99, of Kaneohe, passed away on Tuesday, July 13, 2004. She was born on August 29, 1904 in Waimanalo. After retiring as a pantry worker at Hilton Hawaiian Village, Ellen and her husband James moved to Kaneohe and raised plants and flowers, selling them to Koolau Farmers and at the Aloha Stadium swap meet. While at the Ann Pearl Nursing Facility, she received lots of care and loving treatment from the Ann Pearl staff. They treated her like their grandmother. Her activities included working on her word puzzle books and greeting everyone who walked through the door. That's why they gave her the name, "Queen of Ann Pearl". She also loved playing bingo, painting her fingernails and making beaded bracelets, which she loved to wear. She was preceded in death by her husband, James K. Gilman; sons, James T. Rabbi Morris Goldfarb, resident scholar of Temple Emanu-El, Hawai'i's largest Jewish temple, died yesterday morning June 9, 2004 at The Queen's Medical Center. He was 90. "There was a mutual love affair (with Hawai'i's Jewish community)," said Rabbi Avi Magid of Temple Emanu-El. "He and his wife, Helen, adopted the community — and the community, in turn, adopted him." Goldfarb didn't start out to be a rabbi. Though as a boy, he'd go to Talmud school in the Bronx after his regular school day ended, he'd say that rabbis "had stained-glass voices" and sounded pompous and arrogant. Goldfarb skipped grades in high school, graduating before he turned 16. He worked a year right out of high school, then attended a special joint program with Teachers College at Columbia University and the Jewish Theological Seminary to become a teacher. He first taught at Central Jewish Institute in New York City. During that time, Nazi supporters marched every evening a block away from the school. Parents became so frightened that they kept their children away, and the teacher, with a young wife, had to go looking for work elsewhere. The Goldfarbs landed in Albany, N.Y., where he met rabbis whom he described as being without pretensions in serving their communities. That struck a chord. Goldfarb would go on to rabbinical school and after being ordained in 1944, took over as head of a recreational/religious facility in Bethlehem, Pa., where he worked for five years. He started a Hillel, or Jewish organization for students, at nearby Lehigh University. Through his Hillel connections, he was offered a post as Hillel director at Cornell University, a job he held until he retired. In Cornell, his influence was felt far and wide. "Names were so important to him," said his daughter, Deborah Washofsky. "He said you should remember people's names. He'd walk across campus, greeting people by name and they would remember him. "People would say that's why they stayed in school." Goldfarb started coming out to visit Washofsky when she moved to Hawai'i in 1970. During one visit, he created a study group that continues to this day. He'd also use his extended visits at the time of the high holidays to lead traditional services at Congregation Sof Ma'arav and at Temple Emanu- El. In 1991, he and his wife, Helen, moved here permanently. But retirement didn't keep him away from his love of teaching. Just this year, the resident scholar helped a girl at Temple Emanu-El with her bat mitzvah. "He loved working with the young people," said his granddaughter, Dana Washofsky, president at the temple. She recalls asking her youngest son, Jacob, how his bar mitzvah training was going several years ago. "Are you working on your Torah?" she'd asked. Jacob said no. "What are you talking about?" she asked. "Life," the boy, who had just completed his freshman year at Punahou, told her. Washofsky realized that was part of the preparation. "It wasn't just about reading Hebrew to Papa (as Goldfarb was called). It was very important to have that concentrated learning time with Papa," she said. Magid said he also learned from the teacher who, as he put it, had "a perpetual, almost beatific smile and absolutely loved teaching." He recalled: "On the occasions that my insight was a little different from his, and he really liked it, you could see his eye brighten and a big smile. He'd come over to me afterwards and say, 'Yashar kochecha!' " It's a Hebrew phrase that translates as "May your strength continue to grow." But the words meant more to Magid. They meant something every student wants to hear. "You did a really good job." Goldfarb was preceded in death by his wife, Helen. He is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Washofsky of Honolulu and Judy Weinberg of Toledo, Ohio; brothers, Harvey and Harry; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Marshall M. Goodsill, a nationally recognized attorney in corporate securities and tax law who practiced in Hawai'i for more than five decades, died Saturday in Honolulu. He was 87. Goodsill, a partner in the downtown firm Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel, was a Hawai'i pioneer in the use of tax-exempt bonds to help raise funds to develop key industries here, including electrical utilities. He was an attorney of "impeccable integrity" who set a high standard for "competence, service and integrity," said Gov. Linda Lingle in presenting Goodsill with a commendation for exceptional community service earlier this year. Born in Illinois and a graduate of the University of Minnesota and Harvard Law School (1940), Goodsill came to Hawai'i in June 1941 to join the firm then known as Anderson, Wrenn & Jenks. On December 8, 1941, after just six months with the firm, Goodsill was called to duty as a Navy Reserve Officer and served as an intelligence officer in Germany and Japan. He remained on duty after World War II to implement the land reform and decentralization processes that established the basis for democratic governments in both nations. Among his service medals are citations for the Bronze Star, Order of the British Empire and the Victory Medal. Goodsill returned to the law firm in 1946 and practiced for the next 40 years, becoming one of the state's most distinguished attorneys. He was a nationally recognized expert in corporate securities, corporate reorganization, public utilities and tax practice. Among the firm's well- known clients were Bank of Hawaii, C. Brewer & Co., Castle & Cooke, Hawaiian Telephone, Hawaiian Electric, Dillingham Corp., and many others. Goodsill was Honolulu's generally acknowledged master of public utilities law, representing utility companies many times in public hearings and court appearances. "We are deeply saddened at the passing of a true friend and dedicated colleague," said Martin Anderson, a partner in Goodsill Anderson Quinn & Stifel. "Marshall was a brilliant attorney recognized and respected not only for his legal expertise, but also for his sound judgment, wise advice and high principles." Richardson School of Law, which provides support for the professional development of law faculty in the areas of business, trust and tax law. Wytze Gorter, an economics professor who was named the first permanent chancellor of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa in 1972, died Tuesday Sep. 14, 2004 in Kane'ohe. He was 90. Gorter, who was chairman of the economics department at UCLA before he came to UH, was recruited by former university president Tom Hamilton, and held a variety of positions at Manoa. He was dean of the graduate school and director of research from 1964 to 1972. From 1972 to 1974 Gorter was chancellor. He became president of the Faculty Senate in 1975, was a professor of economics in 1978, and was executive director of the University of Hawai'i Research Corp. Former UH President Fujio Matsuda first met Gorter after Gorter arrived from UCLA and became dean of the graduate school. "He was well established as an economist and a scholar," Matsuda said. "That was his contribution. He raised the quality of the university." Matsuda remembers Gorter as even-tempered. "I never saw him lose his cool, except once, I think, when the regents interfered with his decision as chancellor," Matsuda said. "It was something to do with the athletic program, I think. He didn't rave or rant or run to the press. He just made a decision appropriate for the chancellor at that time. So he was highly respected." The position of chancellor was created in 1971 and was filled on an interim basis by Richard Takasaki until Gorter's arrival. James M. Greenwell - Hawai'i's cattle industry lost one of its pioneers Tuesday Feb 17, 2004 when James M. Greenwell died at his home in North Kona. He was 88. While heading the Hawai'i Meat Co. on O'ahu, Greenwell was responsible for establishing at 'Ewa the state's first modern, mechanized commercial cattle feed lot. The operation allowed Hawai'i-bred cattle to be finished and marketed locally, and provided meat of a quality comparable to grain-fed beef imported from the Mainland, said his son, James Greenwell. The elder Greenwell was in the saddle until age 79, driving cattle, branding calves and working the family's Palani Ranch. He was inducted into the Paniolo Hall of Fame in 2001. "His first love was the cattle business. He probably spent his happiest times on a good horse looking at good cattle," his son said. Greenwell was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Honokohau. He was the grandson of Henry N. Greenwell, who arrived in Hawai'i in 1850. His parents were Frank R. and E. Violet Greenwell. He grew up on the family ranch at Hualalai, and after graduating from Punahou School in 1933, Greenwell was picked to run Kohala Ranch, a part of Parker Ranch at Pu'uhue. He was 18 years old. Five years later, he was appointed general manager of Hawai'i Meat Co., Parker Ranch's production and marketing operation. At the time, most of the cattle in Hawai'i were fattened on the range, but in the 1950s demand for grain-fed cattle finished in feed lots was growing, said son James Greenwell. He said his father responded to the market change by starting the modern feed lot operation in West Loch, which later expanded and moved to Campbell Industrial Park. The cattle industry changed again in the 1990s, James Greenwell said, and most Hawai'i cattle producers now ship their animals to the Mainland and Canada for finishing. After leaving Hawai'i Meat Co. in 1962, Greenwell served as president of various family-owned businesses in Kona, including Lanihau Management Corp. and Lanihau Corp. The two companies were later reorganized into Lanihau Properties LLC, which manages and develops family properties in and around Kailua that are not suitable for pasture. As president of Palani Ranch, with 1,600 head of breeding cattle grazing on 15,000 family-owned and leased acres in North Kona, Greenwell developed and successfully marketed "Kona Brand Yearling Beef." Greenwell was active in the West Hawai'i community and served as chairman of the Board of Governors of Hawai'i Preparatory Academy and chairman of the Hawai'i Leeward Planning Conference. He was a past director of Hawaiian Telephone Co., Hawaiian Airlines, Lewers & Cooke, Von Hamm Young Ltd., the Hawai'i Corp., and Hawai'i Meat Co. Sherwood Robert Holdsworth Greenwell, a kama'aina rancher and politician who labored to preserve Kona's history as development surged ahead in West Hawai'i, died Tuesday Sep. 21, 2004 after a long illness. He was 85. Jill Olson, executive director of the Kona Historical Society, said Greenwell's lifetime of involvement in almost all aspects of the Kona area made him an invaluable historical resource. "He knew more about who was where, and doing what," she said. "He was in politics, he was a rancher, he was involved with the hospital, he was helping the police. He just was an incredible example of somebody who really cared about his community." Greenwell served for 14 years on the Hawai'i County Board of Supervisors, the forerunner of the County Council, and later served on the council for four years. He grew up on the family ranch and eventually led the ranching operation into new enterprises including land development and crops. Among other things, he bought the first civilian Jeep in Kona, and the vehicles became a vital part of ranching operations. J. Curtis Tyler Jr., a friend who first met Greenwell in 1946, recalls him as generous, creative and energetic. Greenwell ran the family ranching business, but also branched out into orchid farming and grew maile commercially. He welcomed visitors to his orchid operation in an effort to draw in tourists. Greenwell developed the Kealakekua Ranch Center and managed it from 1951 to 1989, and also founded the Choice Mart Supermarket. Tyler also credited Greenwell with encouraging growth in the area around the Manago Hotel in Captain Cook. Greenwell also was founder and an investor in the first radio station in Kona, KEKO, which is now KKON. He served as president of the Hawaii Cattlemen's Association and Hawaii Cattlemen's Council, and in 2002 was inducted into the Hawai'i Paniolo Hall of Fame Olson said Greenwell's Kealakekua Ranch office in the 1970s became a hub for residents concerned about the loss of Kona's heritage, and Greenwell became the first president of the Kona Historical Society in 1976. "It was about the early '70s. There was just this explosion of the population and the development started, and that's how the Kona Historical Society got started — we were watching (the old community) all of a sudden disappear," Olson said. The society, which has grown to about 1,000 members, has its offices in the old Greenwell Store that was founded by Greenwell's grandfather in about 1875. Sherwood Greenwell convinced his cousins that the old store should be preserved and donated for the society headquarters, Olson said. Greenwell is survived by his son, Nicholas of Captain Cook; daughters Meg Childs of Captain Cook and Anna Revita of Longmont, Colo.; six grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren.
