Saudi warns illegals face jail after July 3 RIYADH: The Saudi government warned yesterday that illegal foreign workers risk being slapped with prison sentences and fines after a three-month grace period runs out on July 3. Additionally, employers or those who shelter illegal workers will be liable to be jailed for up to two years, the interior and labour ministries said in a joint statement. It urged those whose work and residency permits have expired to take advantage of the amnesty without penalty, includ- ing “special measures” that would allow a change of employer under certain condi- tions. The amnesty does not cover those who entered the oil-rich Gulf state illegally. Survivor pulled from ruins after 17 days SAVAR: Bangladeshi rescuers pulled a woman alive from the ruins of a collapsed garment factory complex yesterday after she spent 17 days trapped in a basement under the rubble. Hours after officials had announced the death toll had surged past the 1,000 mark, recovery teams who had long given up any hope of finding more survivors were stunned to hear the voice of a woman call- ing for help. They managed to extract her from the ruins in an operation broadcast live on tel- evision. Cries of “Allahu Akbar” — “God is great” — rang out from the crowd as the woman, identified as Reshma, was pulled out of the rubble.
