Wilson slowly walks out of the basement studio in the home he shares with wife Melinda and daughters Daria, 2, and Delanie, 6 months old. Wilson squints into the midday sun. He looks at a playground slide. Then he looks at a swing set. Wilson elects to sit down on the saddle swing. In a life of storied ups and downs, Wilson's career is on the upswing. The June release of `Ìmagination'' (Giant Records) is a return to 1966's ``Pet Sounds'' in terms of orchestration and instrumentation, with its the ambitious patterns of tympanies and snare drums. But equally important are Wilson's vocals, which are the smoothest and most soulful since 1970's ``Sunflower.'' Wilson, 55, has suddenly defied age. Mick Jagger and Pete Townshend are brittle rock 'n' roll barnacles. Ray Davies and Paul McCartney have matured gracefully. Yet here's Wilson singing with effervescent hope on ``Dream Angel,'' which he co-wrote with his co-producer Joe Thomas and Jim Peterik of Survivor and Ides of March fame. The song was inspired by Wilson's new daughters. They make him happy. He says that is why he is writing happy music. On ``Dream Angel,'' Wilson even returned to the tight, late '50s harmonies of the Dell Vikings (``Come Go With Me'') and the Four Freshmen - happy-go-lucky voices that influenced the Beach Boys when they were young.

THE RHYTHM OF LIFE Resource Pack Introduction This pack celebrates music and the benefits of its use in working with older people. In particular it celebrates the musical experiences gained from a collaborative project involving 104 older people in care settings across County Durham, along with their support workers, local authority activity staff, and professional musicians from Live Music Now. Music has been shown to have many benefits in care settings, ranging from increased self-confidence and social interaction, to improved physical coordination and memory function. The Rhythm of Life project was designed to explore these benefits by inspiring older people in sheltered accommodation / housing and day care settings to develop their musical skills and enjoy creating and performing their own songs and stories. They were encouraged to explore using music as a creative outlet, while participating in singing, playing instruments, writing poetry and sharing memories. The idea of this pack is to bring together our findings from the Rhythm of Life project and provide a resource for activity staff and non-musicians to develop music work with diverse user groups. It is designed to offer tips for planning your sessions, ideas for activities that you can develop and thoughts on evaluating and documenting your sessions in a way that is relevant and meaningful. Most of all we hope you find the pack encourages everyone who looks at it to think about and celebrate what makes music so special, fun and unique in the way it can be a part of everyone’s Rhythm of Life. I AM BRIAN WILSON Brian Wilson October 11th, 2016 OVERVIEW: As a cofounding member of The Beach Boys in the 1960s, Brian Wilson created some of the most groundbreaking and timeless music ever recorded. Derailed in the 1970s by mental illness, excessive drug use, and the shifting fortunes of the band’s popularity, Wilson came back again and again over the next few decades, surviving and ultimately thriving. In his memoir entitled I Am Brian Wilson, he details the exhilarating highs and lows of his life from his failing memory, including the sources of his creative inspiration throughout the decades. - - - - - - - - - EARLY LIFE: Brian Wilson was born on June 20th, 1942 to Audree and Murry Wilson. Growing up in Hawthorne, California, Wilson exhibited unusual musical abilities, such as being able to hum the melody from When the Caissons Go Rolling Along after only a few verses had been sung by his father before the age of one. Surprisingly, a few years later, he was discovered to have diminished hearing in his right ear. The exact cause of this hearing loss is unclear, though theories range from him simply being born partially deaf to a blow to the head from his father, or a neighborhood bully, being to blame. While Wilson’s father was a reasonable provider, he was often abusive. A minor musician and songwriter, he also encouraged his children in this field in numerous ways. At an early age, Brian was given six weeks of lessons on a toy accordion and, at seven and eight, sang solos in church with a choir.

wouldn’t it be nice by lewis shiner hat if? It’s not just science fiction and fantasy that asks this w question, it’s all of fiction. What if a young student murdered his landlady to prove his moral superiority? What if a woman survived the Civil War and three marriages only to find true love too late? It’s also the question by which we transform ourselves. What if I quit my job and moved to the desert? What if I turned myself loose to create “a teenage symphony to God?” The Icarus who attempted that teenage symphony in 1966 is now 53. For Brian Wilson it’s been thirty years of struggle: with drugs and diet, with people who want to run his life for him, with the intensity of his own feelings. The good news is that Wilson’s life is finally his own again. He is newly married to a woman named Melinda, who is calm and sweet and loving with him. He has a new house in the safety of a gated community high above the city. And he is back in the public eye with two new albums and a movie on the Disney channel. The film is I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times, directed by producer-of-the- moment Don Was. The soundtrack is a kind of Best of Brian Wilson, live in the studio with crack session players like Jim Keltner, Benmont Tench, and Waddy Wachtel. This is not only a wonderful album in its own right, it represents a healing of other wounds.

“Pet Sounds”—The Beach Boys (1966) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Tom Smucker (guest post)* Album cover Original label The Beach Boys Released in May of 1966, “Pet Sounds” was initially understood by some as a new pop music paradigm, for others as a rock betrayal, for a few as a source of personal solace. In the USA, it was also a financial disappointment, a potentially career collapsing abandonment of the Beach Boys surf, car, and summer songs. Across the Atlantic in the UK, the album received a crucially different debut. Keith Moon of The Who helped Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys set up a publicized pre-release “Pet Sounds” enthusiastic listen in London for John Lennon and Paul McCartney. With that recognition established, the LP and the Beach Boys continued their overseas ascent in esteem and popularity while dropping out of favor, if not out of sight, in the United States. As had been his practice previously in the studio, Brian Wilson worked out the instrumental tracks with the cream of LA studio musicians, the so-called “Wrecking Crew,” while the rest of the group was on tour, returning to add their complex yet heartfelt vocal harmonies on the top. In “Pet Sounds,” these tracks were packed with found sounds, countermelodies, and an unpredictable variety of instrumentation that gave each cut a distinctive signature while still part of a coherent whole. Brian was composing using the modern mid-1960s recording studio as his instrument. Because they came around at the same time The Beatles hit the market. Both of these groups are symbiotic. They have this sympathetic relationship. They feed off of each other and they compete with each other, The Beatles and The Beach Boys. The result of that is all this great music. Let’s talk about The Beach Boys for a minute. It’s really a family affair. We have these brothers: Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson. They have their cousin, Mike Love and their neighbor Alan Jardine who plays drums. Their songs are about the beach, paradise, cars, hot rods, California girls. So there’s this theme of California in all of their music and this lifestyle and that’s where they’re from. Their music is a combination of this jazz group called The Four Freshmen. It was a jazz vocal group that sang in really close four part harmony. Brian Wilson just loved this group and he pattern The Beach Boys’ vocal harmonies after this jazz group called The Four Freshmen. Another big part of their music is this surf style that was around them as they were developing as a band. So they adopted this surf style of rock n’ roll, of guitar driven instrumental rock.
