Background Flood situation in south Bengal districts Burdwan, Murshidabad, West Midnapore, Howrah, Nort & South 24 parganas remained grim on Monday after fresh water was released from different barrages, compounding the woes of over 37 lakh people in the affected districts. Among others DVC has itself released 90000 cusecs of water since last midnight. The North 24 Parganas mainly the Sunderbans deltas are reported as the worst affected district seeking immediate support.

Highly affected population

North 24 Parganas is considered as the most damaged district with overall 116 severely affected villages (Mauzas) of 25 Gram Panchayet in, West Bengal. More than 7000 families are in danger of insecure food & water supply, nearly 10400 homes (shelter) are in extremely vulnerable condition and no sufficient shelters are reported for domestic animals. Extremely poor or no sanitation is reported, strong possibility of bacterial contamination in drinking water source is considered. 3 Immediate needs identified The affected population is seeking relief of tarpaulin, bleaching powder , first aid & medicines, bamboo, portable sanitation, kerosene, sanitary material, food items, clothes, utensils etc.

Coordination

IGSSS East is coordinating with West Bengal IAG & other local bodies & organizations (Bithari Disha etc NGOs) especially in North 24 Parganas the most affected district of West Bengal for assessing the current vulnerability & immediate requirements from local community.

Government/CBOs response: Nearly 2.14 Lakh people were sheltered in 1,537 relief camps in the affected districts The government has issued an appeal to all the affected in the districts to move to their nearest relief camp before the situation worsens The situation has set up a control room at the state secretariat to keep an eye on the problem 24X7 The NDRF teams were also sent to different areas in Midnapore, Hooghly and Howrah districts On Monday Chief Minister, West Bengal announced that the state government will provide Rs 4 lakh each to the families of those killed in flood and storm. No other Government support & support from other non government source has yet been reported

Donor update: Christian Aid International Development (CAID) has expressed their interest to partner with IGSSS for emergency response in West Bengal . Till date they have already committed 50,000 Aquatab sachets water treatment tablet abs) and 5 units of Community water filtration (700 liter of drinking water per hour capacity) for the affected population to ensure safe drinking water for people who are displaced and taking shelter in temporary make shift camps.

As the damage is quite huge, there will be a need for more collaboration now and even at a later stage.
