'Memorials of great & good men who were my friends'': Portraits in the Life of Oliver Wolcott^Jn ELLEN G. MILES LIVER woLCOTT, JR. (1760-1833), like many of his contemporaries, used portraits as familial icons, as ges- Otures in political alliances, and as public tributes and memorials. Wolcott and his father Oliver Wolcott, Sr. (i 726-97), were prominent in Connecticut politics during the last quarter of the eighteenth century and the first quarter of the nineteenth. Both men served as governors of the state. Wolcott, Jr., also served in the federal administrations of George Washington and John Adams. Withdrawing from national politics in 1800, he moved to New York City and was a successful merchant and banker until 1815. Burr Hamilton Duel 1804
Burr Hamilton Duel 1804 The Burr–Hamilton duel was a duel between two prominent American politicians, the former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton and sitting Vice President Aaron Burr, on July 11, 1804.[1] At Weehawken in New Jersey, Burr shot and mortally wounded Hamilton. Hamilton was carried to the home of William Bayard on the Manhattan shore, where he died at 2:00 p.m. the next day. One of the most famous personal conflicts in American history, the Burr–Hamilton duel arose from a long-standing political and personal bitterness that had developed between both men over a course of several years. Tensions reached a bursting point with Hamilton's journalistic defamation of Burr's character during the 1804 New York gubernatorial race in which Burr was a candidate. Fought at a time when the practice of dueling was being outlawed in the northern United States, the duel had immense political ramifications. Burr, who survived the duel, was indicted for murder in both New York and New Jersey, though these charges were either later dismissed or resulted in acquittal. The harsh criticism and animosity directed toward him following the duel brought an end to his political career. The Federalist Party, already weakened by the defeat of John Adams in the Presidential Election of 1800, was further weakened by Hamilton's death. The duel was the final skirmish of a long conflict between Democratic-Republicans and Federalists. The conflict began in 1791 when Burr captured a Senate seat from Philip Schuyler, Hamilton's father-in-law, who would have supported Federalist policies. -

American wilderness became a symbol of this country counterposed to the tamed nature of the Old World. Transcendentalist writings propagating the concept of divine presence in the creation supported the fashion for scenery. Ralph W. Emerson and Henry D. Thoreau popularized meditation in landscape as a method of spiritual purification. “In the woods […] my head bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space,” wrote Emerson in his famous essay Nature, “the currents of the Universal Being circulate through me….”1 The Transcendentalists perceived air as an expression of divinity according to the concept rooted in German philosophy and British Romantic poetry. HORNIK he Oxbow takes its name from the shape of the Connecticut River as it winds back on itself below Mount Holyoke in western Massachusetts.1 TThomas Cole’s painting depicts this wonder of nature, which in its pure size and beauty, literally and figuratively, dwarfs the artist who looks up at us from his canvas (positioned a few yards to the left of the parasol) within the painting. The foreground is wilderness, with trees that have blown over from the wind or from the storm on the left side of the composi- tion that shows a downpour of rain. Looking closely at the valley in the dis- tance, one realizes that the land is cultivated and a human settlement exists. Yet those fields and buildings are so trivial in comparison to the rest of the landscape that they go almost undetected. -

Mark Lasalle Fine Art director’s statement d N MAY 2010 THE THOMAS COLE NATIONAL HISTORic SITE opened the first known exhibition to focus Isolely on the women artists associated with the Hudson River School, the nineteenth-century land- scape painting movement. Considering all the attention that has been given to this art movement in recent decades, it is certainly time that the names of these women become better known. The fact that there were women artists who were inspired by the landscape during the same years as Thomas Cole, Asher Durand, and Frederic Church is a story that needs to be told, and we are so pleased to bring their fascinating lives and work to the public. Their landscape paintings, and the stories behind them, speak to these women’s perseverance, triumph, heartbreak, and even their sense of humor about it all. One young woman was forbidden to create art, and her drawings were burned by her stepmother. Another was conducting her art career while raising her children as a single mother. Yet another climbed “all the principal peaks of the Catskills, Adirondacks, and White Mountains, as well as those of the Alps, Tyrol, and Black Forest, often tramping twenty-five miles a day, and sketching as well, often in the midst of a blinding snow- storm,” according to an 1889 article.1 And all this in the sort of clothing we today would not consider practical. -

This illustrated lecture by historian Victoria Johnson features her acclaimed new book,American Eden (Liveright/W. W. Norton, 2018), whichThe Wall Street Journal calls “captivating.” When Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr met on a dueling ground in July 1804, they chose the same attending physician: David Hosack. Family doctor and friend to both Hamilton and Burr, Hosack is today a shadowy figure at the edge of a famous duel, the great achievements of his life forgotten. Hosack was the most famous American doctor of the post-Revolutionary generation and the most beloved medical professor in the United States. He introduced new surgeries, championed the controversial practice of corpse dissection, and founded the first public botanical garden in the new nation. Hosack used his pioneering garden to train the next generation of American doctors and naturalists and to conduct some of the first pharmaceutical research in the United States. Today, his former garden is home to Rockefeller Center.The New York Times writes of American Eden, “Hosack’s Columbia lectures were…‘as good as the theater,’ and so is Johnson’s storytelling.” Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author following the lecture and Q&A with the audience.
