STATEMET OF ARCHBISHOP ALFRED C. HUGHES June 12, 2009

I rejoice at the announcement in Rome today that Our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Archbishop- designate Gregory Aymond the fourteenth Archbishop of New Orleans. Welcome home, Archbishop Aymond. You are no stranger to us all. You are the first native son to be called to shepherd this wonderful Archdiocese. Archbishop Aymond will be installed on August 20 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Louis Cathedral. Archbishop Aymond was born in New Orleans on November 12, 1949. He attended St. Joseph Seminary College and completed his theological studies at Notre Dame Seminary where he earned a Master of Divin- ity degree in 1975. From the beginning Archbishop Hannan Archbishop Aymond receives his pallium in recognized Father Aymond’s special gifts. He appointed Rome from Pope Benedict XVI, June 29,2009 him to teach at St. John Vianney Prep Seminarywhere he not only taught but then became its rector. Archbishop Schulte missioned Father Aymond to Notre Dame Seminary in 1981. He served first as Director of Pastoral Formation and then Rector of Notre Dame Seminary from 1986-2000. In 1997 Pope John Paul II appointed Aymond Aux- iliary in New Orleans. Then in 2000 he appointed him to serve the Diocese of Austin, Texas. Archbishop Ay- mond brings a rich background in Catholic education. While simultaneously serving as Rector of Notre Dame Seminary, he held the post of Executive Director of Chris- tian Formation. In that role, he oversaw the Catholic Schools, Religious Education, Campus Ministry, the Youth Office and the Office for the Pontifical Mission Societies. On the national scene he has been recognized as a leader in Catholic education and serves now as the Chairman of the Board of the National Catholic Education Association. In Austin, Texas, Bishop Aymond presided over signifi- cant growth in parishes and schools. The campus ministry in the Diocese of Austin is a model for outreach to young adults of college age. Archbishop Aymond brings a lively faith, a keen intelligence and a zealous commitment to the mission of the Church. Archbishop Hughes greets his successor I will now serve as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese until the installation on August 20. As I pre- pare I want to acknowledge the extraordinary sacrifices which people around me have had to make. I came in May 2001. These eight years have been rather turbulent. Ex- traordinary people in leadership around me have given of themselves unstintingly to address a series of challenges. The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 rocked our na- tion. The clergy sex abuse crisis rocked our Church. Hurri- cane Katrina rocked New Orleans and the surrounding Gulf Coast area. Reconfiguration of the parishes and schools has rocked this Archdiocese. Now the economic downturn has rocked the global economy. In each case, faith-filled, com- petent men and women have stepped forward to lead our Church response. The difficult decisions that I have been Archbishop Aymond waves to the crowd in (continued on page six.) St. Louis Cathedral

The day of events clearly showed an outpouring of love and affection for a Priest and Bishop dearly loved by his people and as Bishop Dewane concluded in his remarks, “A priest for 50 years, a shepherd who laid down his life to serve with mercy, God’s people. We thank you Bishop Nevins”. Our annual Diocesan Dinner was held on Friday, May 15, 2009 at Anson Restaurant in downtown Charleston. Archbishop Hughes’ Statement Continued From Page Two called upon to make have been made after careful consultation and prayerful discernment. Inevitably there will be those who differ with me. I want to express my sorrow for the pain that has been experi- enced and ask forgiveness where hurt has angered some. We are one Church, with one Father, one Lord and Savior, in one Holy Spirit. God grant the understanding and the healing that will enable us fully to be the vibrant, evangelizing and Eucharistic Church he calls us to be. May God bless Archbishop Aymond. May God bless us all.

CLOTHING EMBROIDERED WITH THE JERUSALEM CROSS

At the recent Annual Meeting and Investiture in Charleston, several members were seen wearing cloth- ing embroidered with the Jerusalem Cross. One Knight had the Jerusalem Cross embroidered on the breast pocket of his blue blazer, another had the Jerusalem Cross embroidered above the pocket of his white oxford shirt which he wore to the Investiture, a couple wore matching polo shirts embroidered with the Jerusalem Cross and a Lady carried a canvas casual purse with the Jerusalem Cross embroidered on the side.

All of these clothing items were obtained from Lands’ End through its Business Outfitters Department. If you are interested in considering such clothing items, the process for obtaining information and ordering is as follows.

To see the many clothing items available, go to www.landsend.com. At the bottom of the home page, click on “Business Outfitters.” At the top of the Business Outfitters page, make your selection by cate- gory. Or, you can order a catalog at (800) 338-2000. Remember, however, that only the items offered by the Business Outfitters Department can be embroidered with the Jerusalem Cross, not items in the general catalog although some may be identical. And, of course, there is an embroidery fee.

When you place your order, you will need the Jerusalem Cross Registration Number which is 0353544. (Have the representative verify that this is the Jerusalem Cross.) You will also need a Customer Num- ber which will be assigned to you when you place your first order and, in the future, will identify you with the Jerusalem Cross. If you forget your Customer Number after your first order you can also be located by your name and zip code.

The Jerusalem Cross from Lands’ End is only to be used by members of the Order and the Registration Number must not be given to non-members. The Southeastern Lieutenancy receives no benefit from the registration of the Jerusalem Cross or from any embroidered clothing. This information is provided only to let you know of another way to display the Jerusalem Cross.
