MoS Rapid Response Script – Danny Meyer Interview Click here to listen to the full episode with Danny Meyer. DANNY MEYER: This virus has done a superb job of exposing a lot of the preexisting conditions that our industry had. We're down to 75 people right now – which, by the way, is fewer people than I employed when I was 27, when I first got into this business. Part of the thing that America is learning is that restaurants play a massively important role in the whole economy of our country. We're throwing a lot of pasta up against the wall and we're going to see what sticks. Being the first to close is one thing – but I don't want to be the last to open. Every day we lose money could lead to even more layoffs, which is exactly the opposite of what we want to do morale-wise, emotionally, or economically. BOB SAFIAN: That’s Danny Meyer, New York City’s pre-eminent restaurateur and the founder of Shake Shack. Forced by the pandemic to close iconic restaurants like Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Cafe, Danny is now radically rethinking his business model, trying to re-image the future of restaurants without killing off the warm hospitality that made his establishments so endearing. I’m Bob Safian, former editor of Fast Company, founder of The Flux Group, and host of Masters of Scale: Rapid Response. Danny was a guest on this show at the very beginning, when the Great Lockdown first began, after laying off 2,000 of his employees.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Elizabeth Lutz, 212.835.2763, [email protected] @TomColicchio + @GailSimmons Talk Food and Temple Court in New Downtown Alliance Video NEW YORK (March 1, 2018) – Chef and Restaurateur Tom Colicchio sat down with fellow Top Chef judge Gail Simmons for an inside look at his restaurant Temple Court in the latest video from The Alliance for Downtown New York. Located in The Beekman Hotel, Temple Court has earned high marks for both Chef Colicchio's signature style and seasonal take on classic dishes as well as for the restaurant and bar's meticulously appointed decor. Here he tells us how the restaurant pays homage to the neighborhood's history. Watch the video at: http://twn.nyc/TempleCourt "A lot of what we do here at Temple Court starts with this idea of bringing back the classics and making them modern. It's all a metaphor for what's going on Downtown. What's old is new, what's new is old - it's all coming back again," notes Chef/Owner Colicchio. "Walking from the Oculus to Temple Court, you can literally visit the future and the past of Lower Manhattan within 15 minutes," adds Simmons. Temple Court was one of the most highly anticipated restaurant openings in Lower Manhattan and is part of the wave of established names and up-and-coming food stars joining the neighborhood's ranks. On the horizon, additional Lower Manhattan restaurant openings will include projects from: - Andrew Carmellini (The Dutch), - Jean-Georges Vongerichten (ABC Kitchen, Jean-Georges), - Daniel Humm and Will Guidara (Eleven Madison Park), - Danny Meyer (Gramercy Tavern), - David Chang (Momofuku) and - James Kent (Nomad).

  • The Unificationist Funerary Tradition
religions Article The Unificationist Funerary Tradition Lukas Pokorny Department of Religious Studies, University of Vienna, 1010 Vienna, Austria; [email protected] Received: 22 April 2020; Accepted: 17 May 2020; Published: 20 May 2020 Abstract: This paper explores the distinctive funerary tradition of the Unification Movement, a globally active South Korean new religious movement founded in 1954. Its funerary tradition centres on the so-called Seonghwa (formerly Seunghwa) Ceremony, which was introduced in January 1984. The paper traces the doctrinal context and the origin narrative before delineating the ceremony itself in its Korean expression, including its preparatory and follow-up stages, as well as its short-lived adaptation for non-members. Notably, with more and more first-generation adherents passing away—most visibly in respect to the leadership culminating in the Seonghwa Ceremony of the founder himself in 2012—the funerary tradition has become an increasingly conspicuous property of the Unificationist lifeworld. This paper adds to a largely uncharted area in the study of East Asian new religious movements, namely the examination of their distinctive deathscapes, as spelled out in theory and practice. Keywords: Unification Church; funeral; death; ritual; new religious movement; Korea; East Asia 1. Introduction “‘Death’ is a sacred word. It is not a major expression for sorrow and pain. [ ::: ] The moment one enters the spiritual world is a time that one enters a world of joy and victory with the earthly life having blossomed, the fruits borne, and the grain ladled. It is a moment we [i.e., those staying behind] should rejoice. It should be a time when we celebrate wholeheartedly.

The Transom Review – Vol.12/ Issue 3 Intro from Jay Allison Radio used to be ephemera. Now everything lasts forever. Except, perhaps, spot news. Who goes back to listen to the daily top of the hour? Phyllis Fletcher and Robert Smith do! Their Transom Manifesto breaks down the lowly news spot, which, they point out, can make you famous. It is probably more listened-to than any other moment on the air, and in its fleeting brevity, there is power. Robert (NPR) and Phyllis (KUOW) show you all the miniature moving parts in a fascinating and delicate dissection of these journalistic sonnets. Their Transom Manifesto is sure to be thumbtacked onto local and national newsroom bulletin boards for years to come. They also give you audio examples from Susan Stamberg, David Green, Mike Pesca, Zoe Chace, GregWarner, Chana Joffe-Walt, and lots of other Masters of the Minute. Creativity in a Minute Nobody gets a Peabody award for a piece under a minute. Reporters don’t dream of writing 45 seconds of copy. NPR doesn’t even archive its news spots on its website. After they go out on the radio waves, they are gone forever. But we’re here to argue that spots are an opportunity, not a curse. We like to think of them as the research and development arm of public radio. Spots are how you can dip into a new subject.

We are so excited to have you back in Charm City for the first annual Baltimore Homecoming. We are grateful to the hundreds of leaders from across Baltimore – reverends and educators, artists and business executives, activists and philanthropists – who joined together to organize this event. We each have our own memories of Baltimore – a humid summer afternoon or spring ballgame, a favorite teacher or a first job. We hope that you take time while you’re home to reconnect with your past and savor the city – catch up with friends and family, drop by a favorite restaurant, or visit an old neighborhood. Reconnecting is the first step. But our deeper hope is that you begin to forge a new relationship to the city. Whether you left five years ago or fifty, Baltimore has evolved. The Baltimore of today has a dynamic real estate market and budding technology sector. Our artists are leading the national conversation on race and politics. Our nonprofit entrepreneurs are on the cutting-edge of social change. The Port of Baltimore is one of the fastest growing in the U.S. The city’s growth has emerged from and complemented our historic pillars of strength – a rich cultural heritage, world-class research institutions, strategic geographic location, and beautiful waterfront. Baltimore faces significant challenges that we cannot ignore: segregation, entrenched poverty, crime and violence.
