Tottenham Hotspur FC have it all to do in their UEFA Europa League round of 16 tie, having lost 3-0 at Borussia Dortmund in the first leg. Previous meetings • Dortmund made light work of an under-strength Tottenham side in the first leg in what was the sides' first competitive meeting, with a 3-0 scoreline perhaps slightly flattering to the visitors. • It was Dortmund's biggest win against English opponents and Tottenham's worst defeat over 90 minutes in their 137 UEFA Cup and UEFA Europa League games. • The sides had previously met in four friendly games, which produced three Tottenham wins and a draw: • Spurs thrashed Dortmund 4-0 during a May 1950 tour of Germany and Belgium and then beat them 2-1 in the Festival of Britain tournament the next year. The teams drew 1-1 in a pre-season friendly in Dortmund in August 2006, then met again at Feyenoord's Jubilee tournament in Rotterdam in August 2008, with Tottenham prevailing 3-0. • Spurs' record in 17 UEFA encounters with German clubs reads W9 D2 L6 (W6 D1 L0 at home – W3 D1 L6 in Germany). In those seven home games against German sides, they have conceded just once, twice winning 3-0. • Dortmund overcame Liverpool FC 2-1 to lift the European Cup Winners' Cup in Glasgow in 1966. Their overall record in 20 competitive matches against English opposition is W10 D4 L6 (W6 D3 L1 in Dortmund – W3 D1 L5 in England). Form guide • Tottenham are unbeaten in nine European home games (W7 D2), and have won both of their most recent White Hart Lane UEFA fixtures by three-goal margins. • Valencia CF's example from the 2013/14 quarter-finals may be encouraging for Spurs; they lost the away leg of their tie 3-0 at FC Basel 1893, but scored three at home to take the game into extra time, and ended up winning 5-0. • Dortmund's UEFA away record under this season is W4 D1 L1. They have not lost by three goals in Europe since a 3-0 loss at Real Madrid CF in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals. • Spurs last reached the round of 16 in 2013/14, losing out to Benfica, having got to the quarter-finals the previous season. They lifted the UEFA Cup in 1972 and 1984, having earlier claimed the 1963 European Cup Winners' Cup. • Prior to this campaign, Dortmund had not featured in the UEFA Europa League since an unsuccessful group stage foray in 2010/11. They were twice losing UEFA Cup finalists, beaten by Juventus in 1993 and Feyenoord in 2002. Trivia and links • The journey from Dortmund to London is a little over 500km. • Dortmund are one of two clubs to have made it all the way from the third qualifying round to the round of 16 this term, along with Athletic Club. • Athletic's Aritz Aduriz is the top scorer in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League with seven goals; Spurs' Erik Lamela is his closest challenger still involved in the competition with six. • Dortmund have hit the woodwork ten times since matchday one – twice as many times as any other side in the competition this season. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been responsible for five of those near misses. • Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa turns 27 on the day of the second leg. During his time at Manchester United FC, he faced Tottenham four times without winning (D2 L2), though he scored in a 3-2 home defeat in September 2012. • Dortmund's Marcel Schmelzer can make his 50th UEFA club competition appearance in this game. • Should Dortmund capture the UEFA Europa League this season, they would become just the fifth club to have picked up all three major UEFA trophies (European Champion Clubs' Cup/UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup) after AFC Ajax, Bayern München, Juventus and Chelsea FC. • Tottenham's Son Heung-Min scored five times in his five matches against Dortmund, with Hamburger SV and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. • The clubs have two former players in common: midfielder Steffen Freund went to White Hart Lane from Dortmund in 1998; defender Lee Young-Pyo left Spurs for Dortmund in 2008. The coaches • Mauricio Pochettino has been manager of Tottenham since summer 2014, the former RCD Espanyol and Paris Saint-Germain defender brought to London after an impressive 18 months at Southampton FC. The 44-year-old was capped 20 times by Argentina, featuring at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

FSV Mainz 05 but took 12 months out before assuming his current role. Penalty shoot-outs • Spurs' record in three UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W1 L2 (W1 at home – L2 away): W 4-3 H v RSC Anderlecht (1983/84 UEFA Cup final) L 6-5 A v PSV Eindhoven (2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 16) L 4-1 A v FC Basel 1893 (2012/13 UEFA Europa League quarter-finals) • Dortmund's record in four UEFA penalty shoot-outs is W2 D2 (W1 L1 at home – W1 L1 away): W 6-5 A v AJ Auxerre (1992/93 UEFA Cup semi-finals) W 3-1 H v Rangers FC (1999/2000 UEFA Cup third round) L 4-2 H Club Brugge KV (2003/04 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) L 4-3 A Udinese Calcio (2008/09 UEFA Cup first round)
