JOB DESCRIPTION / DIRECTOR OF EXHIBITION & PROGRAMMING

ABOUT FRAMELINE Frameline’s mission is to change the world through the power of cinema. As a media arts non-profit, Frameline’s programs connect filmmakers and audiences in San Francisco and around the world. Frameline’s integrated programs provide critical funding for emerging LGBTQ filmmakers, reach hundreds of thousands with a collection of more than 250 films distributed nationally, inspire thousands of students through Youth In Motion, which sends free films and curricula to schools across the nation, and create an international stage for the world’s best queer film through the San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival (attendance 60,000+), additional programs and cinematic events.

THE POSITION The Director of Exhibition & Programming develops, directs and implements curatorial vision for Frameline’s exhibition programs including the signature San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival, year-round screenings, special events and administers the Frameline Completion Fund. The Director of Exhibition & Programming serves as team leader for Frameline’s programming team, working in collaboration with those who manage supporting departments. Reporting directly to and working closely with the Executive Director, the Director of Exhibition & Programming is responsible for artistic, curatorial, operational, and budgetary oversight for Frameline’s Exhibition/Festival and Filmmaker Support programs.

This is a full-time, exempt, position with benefits. Work schedules require expanded hours and flexibility during peak periods, especially in the months prior to and during the San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival, held each June. The salary will be commensurate with the candidate's abilities and experience. Frameline offers medical, vision, and dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, paid vacation and sick time.

Salary: $60,000 - $75,000

Status: Exempt Regular Full Time

Supervises: Operations & Systems Manager, Senior Programmer, Programmer, Program & Hospitality Manager, Publications Manager, and Travel Coordinator

QUALIFICATIONS

• Demonstrated success in arts programming, with a minimum of five (5) years previous film festival programming and/or curatorial experience • Proven history of film festival production and management • Proven relationships with filmmakers, distributors, sales agents and studios • Familiarity of film, video, and digital exhibition formats • A commitment to Frameline’s mission and an understanding of its programs and role in the broader LGBTQ movement, queer communities, and media arts field • Knowledge of LGBTQ film history • Excellent organizational, analytical, and time management skills • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, and attention to detail • Flexible, creative, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment • Strong management skills with ability to independently manage multiple personnel and projects simultaneously while succeeding under pressure • Aptitude to be both engaging and professional when making presentations at events and meetings • Proficiency to cultivate meaningful relationships with media makers, supporters, industry representatives, and funders • Capacity to take initiative, build consensus and to work effectively cross-departmentally • Strong competency in MS Office Suite, Filemaker Pro, internet research and social media platforms

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

FILM FESTIVAL & YEAR-ROUND EXHIBITION ACTIVITIES – 85%

Festival Programming • Responsible for all aspects of curating the Film Festival including soliciting, screening, selecting, securing, slotting and scheduling films, as well as planning panels, seminars and special events • Lead plenary sessions deciding Festival programming and structure with other department heads • Ensure high level of operational execution and exhibition presentation quality • Oversee Festival Call for Entries process and integrity of data within Festival Databases • Coordinate with and host guest filmmakers and talent and lead discussions, panels, Q&A’s • Supervise all Programming staff including Senior Programmer, Programmer, Program & Hospitality Manager, Publications Manager, and Travel Coordinator

Frameline Encore & Advance Screenings/Cultivation Events • Direct the implementation and programming of all non-festival Exhibition programs & projects including monthly screening series (Frameline Encore) and advance/sneak previews • Oversee organization and selection of films for Frameline’s year-round programs including tracking, identifying and securing films • Maintain relationships with collaborating partners and venues • Pro-actively work with Studio/Distribution partners in securing advance/sneak previews for members and fundraising purposes

Programming Department Year-Round • Research and track new and upcoming titles, maintain film database research records • Maintain excellent familiarity with current and historical LGBTQ film and filmmakers • Establish a presence / leadership role in the international film field, through ongoing engagement and relationships with international curators, film organizations and filmmakers • Cultivate and maintain effective distributor and exhibitor relations and manage negotiations with distributors, producers, filmmakers, and sales agents to secure films for exhibition • Work with external partners to share programming ideas and to develop projects/initiatives • Ensure high level of operational execution and exhibition presentation quality • Serve as one of key representatives of Frameline at meetings of peers and colleagues, domestic and international festivals/markets, conferences and to the public

Communications & Marketing • Oversight of Festival Publications Manager in coordinating the production of various printed and digital Festival publications • Strategize programming related content, including alumni information and upcoming releases, for Frameline’s website, blog, eNews and social media • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Communications Department in the development of the Festival Identity branding/marketing campaign and Trailer production for the Festival • Work with Communications Department and Festival Publicists to generate key press messaging and maximize Festival publicity • Represent the Festival and Frameline to local, national and international press

FILMMAKER SUPPORT – 10%

Frameline Completion Fund • Design, implement and oversee the operations of annual granting program • Oversee grants submission process, processing and evaluation of applications, integrity of data within Films Database • Act as main contact for all inquiries regarding the Completion Fund • Collaborate with Communications department on outreach to filmmakers/industry contacts and drafting of press releases regarding the Fund • Organize an independent jury to review short list and award grants, facilitate jury deliberation meeting and viewing of short list • Oversee the distribution of grant funds to grantee projects and ensure responses to all applicants

Frameline Film Festival Awards • Oversee the Festival Awards program including Juried and Audience Awards as well as annual Frameline Award honoree • Assemble members of Festival Juries, manage screening, and deliberation processes • Oversee the distribution of award funding to recipients

GENERAL ADMINISTRATION – 5%

Planning, Coordination and Records • Play a key role in the ongoing management of Frameline as a member of the senior staff group, and in the long-term development of Frameline by participating in long-term organizational strategy, budget, and Board meetings • Work with Executive Director and other appropriate staff on long-range planning of the Festival • Participate in determining content for and assist in the writing of grants for Exhibition- related funding • Develop and manage departmental budgets (Festival, Exhibition, and Filmmaker Support), monitor expenses and revenues, keeping within budget guidelines • Conduct interviews, oversee hiring process, and training for Programming team • Organize, plan and lead Festival meetings
