Visitscotland Quality Assurance B&Bs participating in the QA scheme are visited annually, usually on an incognito overnight stay, by the very demanding Quality Assurance Advisors. During their visit they sample the warmth of welcome, the food and the accommodation and the general efficiency with which their requirements are met. The Advisors award marks in over 40 different categories and only if the establishment achieves between 70- 84% are they awarded the 4 star grading and B&B owners can be proud of having received this Excellent rating. A 5 Star Grading is only given to truly exceptional establishments who achieve over 85% in their assessment. A New Gold Award was introduced in 2009 for establishments who provide exceptionally high standards of hospitality. Be A Popular Guest! Please remember that B&Bs are private homes, not hotels. Your hosts have to do all those things that we take for granted – go shopping, visit the doctor, have a haircut etc. Access to your B&B may be restricted during the day and your hostess will appreciate your consideration, especially with regard to arrival and departure times. Cancellation Or Changing Of A Booking Making a booking, either verbally, by e-mail or in writing, is a legal contract, which both parties must honour. Different establishments may have different cancellation policies, so check when booking. If you cancel, then the establishment is legally entitled to charge you for the whole of the accommodation you booked, unless it is re-let. We advise that you take out holiday cancellation insurance and that you only make a reservation if you intend to turn up. 1 THE SCHOOL HOUSE B&B Edgerston School House, Camptown, Jedburgh TD8 6PW Tel: 01835 840627 HOSTS: Margaret & Tony Robinson ROOMS: 1 Dbl (en-suite) 1 Twin (priv.facs) OPEN: APR - DEC RATES: B&B from £45 Sgl. MACCULLOCH EDINBURGH AND LONDON OLIPHANT ANDERSON & FERRIER 1905 Jerusalem, Athens, and Rome, I would see them before I die ! But I'd rather not see any one of the three, 'Plan be exiled for ever from Skye ! " Lovest thou mountains great, Peaks to the clouds that soar, Corrie and fell where eagles dwell, And cataracts dash evermore? Lovest thou green grassy glades. By the sunshine sweetly kist, Murmuring waves, and echoing caves? Then go to the Isle of Mist." Sheriff Nicolson. DA 15 To MACLEOD OF MACLEOD, C.M.G. Dear MacLeod, It is fitting that I should dedicate this book to you. You have been interested in its making and in its publica- tion, and how fiattering that is to an author s vanity / And what chief is there who is so beloved of his clansmen all over the world as you, or whose fiame is such a household word in dear old Skye as is yours ? A book about Skye should recognise these things, and so I inscribe your name on this page. Your Sincere Friend, THE A UTHOR. 8G54S7 EXILED FROM SKYE. The sun shines on the ocean, And the heavens are bhie and high, But the clouds hang- grey and lowering O'er the misty Isle of Skye. I hear the blue-bird singing, And the starling's mellow cry, But t4eve the peewit's screaming In the distant Isle of Skye.

T:E1E .""'..,.. fre,e ~resl?~terian.'" ~aga3tne Ani MONTHLY RECORD. VOL. XXVI. SEPTEMBER, I92I. No. S. ~be J8ternaI 'Wlor~. o the thoughtful and attentive rell-der of the Gospel according T to John, there are two striking characteristics which!piesent t!}emselves-the one is the extraordinary simplicity :of the wording; a'nd the other, the extraordinary depth of the truth presented, in such simple language. The very simplicity of the latiguage,is,apt to make one lose sight of the S'e'cond characteristic, just as the clearness of a lake, permitting one to see to the depths, is apt to hide the very depth that is revealed by the' clearness. 'The opening verses of the Gospel begin with that august simplicity, 'that is maintained tnroughout the marvellou§l narrative of the sayings and doings of the Son of God-"'ln the beginning was th'e Word, and the Word was with God, and the 'Word was God." Yet-how unsearchableare the truths presented to us lin -language clothed in the very majesty of simplicity? Many attempts have been made by expositors to explain'the name by which thetbelov~d disciple designates the Lord of Glory: some of these have been very successful; while' others have only multiplied words without knowledge. The openirig words of the Gospel recall tHe opening words of Genesis; but, wbereas in Genesis,'" the beginning" is the first moment of time and creation, in the Gospel, John directs our thoughts beyond the beginning, and speaks, of that which "was" when time began. When God created the heavens and the earth, the Word "was.", This Word, which was in.

Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2012 with funding from National Library of Scotland http://archive.org/details/historyofmacleodOOmack PREFACE. -:o:- This volume completes my fifth Clan History, written and published during the last ten years, making altogether some two thousand two hundred and fifty pages of a class of literary work which, in every line, requires the most scrupulous and careful verification. This is in addition to about the same number, dealing with the traditions^ superstitions, general history, and social condition of the Highlands, and mostly prepared after business hours in the course of an active private and public life, including my editorial labours in connection with the Celtic Maga- zine and the Scottish Highlander. This is far more than has ever been written by any author born north of the Grampians and whatever may be said ; about the quality of these productions, two agreeable facts may be stated regarding them.

Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) Local Studies Vol. 12 : An t-Eilean Sgitheanach: Port Rìgh, An Srath & Slèite 2 nd Edition Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) Local Studies 1 Vol. 12: An t-Eilean Sgitheanach: Port Rìgh, An Srath & Slèite (Isle of Skye: Portree, Strath & Sleat) Author: Kurt C. Duwe 2nd Edition April, 2006 Executive Summary This publication is part of a series dealing with local communities which were predominantly Gaelic- speaking at the end of the 19 th century. Based mainly (but not exclusively) on local population census information the reports strive to examine the state of the language through the ages from 1881 until to- day. The most relevant information is gathered comprehensively for the smallest geographical unit pos- sible and provided area by area – a very useful reference for people with interest in their own commu- nity. Furthermore the impact of recent developments in education (namely teaching in Gaelic medium and Gaelic as a second language) is analysed for primary school catchments. The Isle of Skye has been a Gaelic-speaking stronghold for centuries. After World War II decline set in especially in the main townships of Portree, Broadford and Kyleakin. However, in recent years a re- markable renaissance has taken place with a considerable success in Gaelic-medium education and of course the establishment and growth of the Gaelic further education college at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Sleat peninsula. Foundations have now been laid for a successful regeneration of Gaelic in the south- eastern parts of the Isle of Skye. However, there is still much room for improvement especially in the pre-school sector and in a few locations like Raasay where Gaelic has shown a dramatic decline recently.
