5 Can I make alternative travel arrangements?

All AMHSI students are expected to arrive on international flights arranged by the AMHSI travel agent. We are not responsible for students who choose to arrive prior to the beginning of a given session, or stay beyond the end of the session.

When a student arrives or departs on a flight other than the group flight:

• It must be pre-approved in writing.

• You are expected to arrange for your own transportation to the campus and/or airport. (If arrival and departure times coincide with the Group Flight times, students may join the group at the airport)

• You are responsible for your own housing arrangements for any time you are in Israel before or after a session.

• AMHSI medical insurance covers the student only during the official dates of the program.

• You are not permitted to arrive on campus during Shabbat (Shabbat takes place from Friday sundown to Saturday after dark).

• You must provide your arrival and departure information to your AMHSI contact if you are not participating in the group flight.

• If you arrive in Israel earlier than the group, contact Yardena Spector-Nizri, Dean of Students, at 052-3270727 or [email protected] and provide her with the name and contact information where you are staying, and arrange for your arrival time on campus

6 Your passport! If you have a passport

• Immediately check to see if it is still valid and signed by you. • The Israeli Consulate asks that your passport be valid for six months beyond the date of return.

If you do not have a passport

• Application forms are available on the Internet or through most U.S. Postal offices. The government website for passport information is: www.travel.state.gov/passport • Allow a minimum of four to six weeks to receive your passport. • Sign your passport when you receive it. Please upload a copy of your passport page to your online application.

Citizenship If you are not a US citizen

• You must immediately contact the consulate of the country where you hold citizenship and the Israel Consulate to see if an entrance visa is required. • Start as early as possible--the process is time consuming.

If you are an Israeli citizen or the child of an Israeli citizen • A child born to an Israeli citizen has automatic Israeli citizenship. • Israelis are required to enter and leave Israel using their Israeli passport. • Contact the Israeli Consulate to get advice on your status and to determine what documents you will need for travel to Israel. • The documents should include permission to be exempt from army service during the student’s stay in Israel.

No one is permitted to board an international flight without a signed valid passport or signed valid visa.

Note: American and Canadian citizens are granted a three-month tourist visa upon their arrival at Ben Gurion Airport. Israeli citizens must travel with their Israeli passport. Traveling with your passport • Make two (2) copies of your passport. • Leave one copy at home. • Pack the other copy in your luggage separate from your original passport.

7

What are the latest luggage requirements & restrictions?

1. Luggage Regulations* You are permitted one (1) free piece of luggage plus a carry-on and a small purse/computer case. Be sure to use your HSI luggage tags on the outside and also place your name, address and telephone number in plain sight on the inside of all luggage. We recommend luggage with wheels as students are responsible for carrying their own suitcases from baggage claim to reception areas. Leave extra space in both pieces of your luggage for gifts and other purchases in Israel that you will be carrying back to the U.S.

2. Luggage Dimensions for International Flights*

a) Checked luggage  Free baggage allowance is one (1) piece.  Each bag cannot be more than 62 inches L.W.H.  Bags may weigh up to 50 pounds each (or you will be charged an international overweight fee).  There is a charge of at least $100 (each way) for a second piece of luggage. A third piece, such as a guitar, will cost $215 each way.  You should expect to be charged for excess weight. Excess weight charge on the first 2 pieces is a minimum of $70 per bag each way.

b) Carry-on luggage • May not exceed a total of 50 inches maximum L.W.H. with a weight of more than 17 pounds. • It should be small enough to fit, with ease, under the seat in front of you on the plane.

Please be sure you pack your carry-on with the following:  Your passport (you will be asked to turn this in upon arrival on campus)  Flight information for return trip home if you are not travelling with the group (you will be asked to turn this in upon arrival on campus).  Camera  Medications  Any valuables  Change of clothes and toiletries (in case luggage is delayed)

*Note: Luggage regulations change frequently. We suggest that you check www.elal.com to confirm the current size of luggage allowed. 8

Airline security Current U.S. security regulations: • All passengers are required to submit their hand and checked luggage to inspection. • Passengers are encouraged to arrive at the airport for international flights four hours in advance of departure. (Our arrival time, gives us a chance to check in early and deal with any problems that may arise) • Do not wrap gifts as security may remove the wrapping. • Do not pack in your hand luggage, any sharp objects including scissors, nail scissors, tweezers, pen knives, box cutter, cigarette lighters, etc. They will be confiscated and this may delay your boarding the flight. Also remember no liquids exceeding 3.4 ounces will be allowed through security.

Due to regulations concerning carry-on luggage, we suggest you review the following website closely and adhere to the policies described: http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/prohibited-items

How should I dress for the flight? Wear loose, comfortable clothing (during long flights the body tends to swell), socks for warmth, sweat shirt as it may be cold on the plane and comfortable shoes. You may want to bring a small pillow to rest your head on and sleep during the long flight.

How much cash should I carry? • Students should carry no more than $350-400, when traveling from your home to Israel. $115 will be paid to ELAL, at JFK on the way to Israel, for the baggage charge for the second bag. Part of these funds should include four separate envelopes with your student’s name on each envelope, marked as follows: • Envelope #1: $40 RETURN HOME MONEY plus $110 BAGGAGE FEE = $150 TOTAL. This will be returned to students on the last day to help take care of their baggage and unexpected expenses they may have along the way home. • Envelope #2: $30 DAMAGE DEPOSIT. This will be collected and put aside as a loss and damage deposit. This money will be returned on the last day if the student has no outstanding loss or damage fees. • Envelope #3: $10 PADLOCK RENTAL. This will be used to rent a lock for their closets that students can use to safeguard their valuables. • Envelope #4: $50-100 PRAGUE-POLAND SPENDING MONEY—This will be put in a safe and returned to students prior to departure to Prague • Envelope #5: $60 if you plan to purchase linens and towels. Students may opt to bring a credit card for payment of the baggage charges. They will still need $40/ $30/ $10 in envelopes. Envelopes will be provided to you for this purpose by AMHSI closer to departure. Any additional money the students may be carrying can be utilized for spending money during the trip. 9

Packing

What should I bring to AMHSI? This packing list is a good guideline as to what should be packed for your stay at AMHSI.

1. Some tips for electrical appliances

The electricity in Israel is 220 volts (110 in the USA) which means if you want to use electrical appliances such as hairdryers, shavers, flat irons, etc. you will need to pack a converter as well as an adapter. Note: not all hairdryers will work in Israel, and to be safe, you can purchase an inexpensive dual voltage hair dryer that is also designed for 220 volts.

2. Should I bring my musical instruments?

The campus has a music room which is available for use by AMHSI students. The room has various musical instruments, including an acoustic guitar, electric piano, bass, and drums. The music room is open at select hours, and may only be used with supervision by the madrichim.

Note:If you do decide to bring an instrument, the airlines may charge approximately $70-$230 (each way) as it may be considered an extra piece of luggage.

3. Should I bring a laptop?

The campus is wired for Internet access. If you choose to bring your laptop, tablet or any other electronic devices we do not except responsibility for loss or theft.

4. What about jewelry or expensive items?

Remember you will be living in a dormitory and sharing space with lots of people. In any communal setting there is always a risk of theft. Each student does have his/her own personal closet that can be locked, and each dorm room can be locked. A good rule of thumb is “do not bring anything you are afraid of losing or damaging”.

10 What do I need to pack?

Prague and Poland

The AMHSI/CESJDS trip to Prague and Poland is an enriching element of the CESJDS Senior Experience. The trip is designed to educate students about the long and rich history of Jewish life which largely vanished after the Holocaust. Students will learn about how first arrived in the Czech Republic and Poland, and about the unique circumstances that enabled Judaism and Jewish culture to flourish there for over a thousand years.

Against this backdrop, students will also learn about the events of World War II and the Holocaust. The students will visit the cities and towns where Jews lived, worked, and developed a unique culture. The group will also bear witness to the destruction of Jews and Jewish life in Europe by going to Terezin, Plaszow, Auschwitz-Birkenau, and Majdanek. At each of these sites, students will conduct ceremonies that commemorate the lives of those who were murdered there.

On the trip, the students will also have an opportunity to learn about the re-emergence of Jewish life today in Poland, and meet and dialogue with a righteous Gentile.

The AMSHI core teachers and madrichim will accompany the students throughout the entire program while in Prague and Poland. While in Prague and Poland, the students will be transported by bus. Travelling with our group will be three Polish staff that will be responsible for security and logistics.

All AMHSI rules for student safety, security, and conduct apply during the program in Prague and Poland.

The accommodations in Prague and Poland are usually 3-star hotels, and are very comfortable and well-maintained. All of the food provided on the program is Kosher.

Except for limited free time in designated areas, the students are not permitted to wander freely while in Prague and Poland.

Prior to our departure from Israel, parents will receive emergency contact information for the trip, including the phone numbers of AMHSI staff and the names and phone numbers for the hotels where we will be staying.

14

What to pack for the Prague/Poland trip?

In the Israel packing list we already included all you need for Europe. It’s very hard to know what the weather will be like in Europe. So we made up a general list that will be modified and given to students a week before departing to Europe.

 3 bags - one comfortable day bag (i.e. backpack), overnight backpack or duffle bag, and a suitcase. The suitcase will not be accessible during the day or overnight when we are in Lublin. In Lublin, you will be asked to pack the overnight bag.  2 pairs of shoes- expect your shoes to get wet! Therefore pack shoes that are as waterproof as possible. Also remember to choose very comfortable walking shoes. You should also pack a pair of sneakers.  Shabbat clothes.  Rain gear (raincoat, umbrella, etc.)  Warm clothes (coat, scarf, thermal underwear, hat, gloves, socks).  Pajamas  Change of clothes for a week  Kippah, Talit & Teffilin  Siddur  Toiletries  Camera batteries  Snacks  Things to do on long bus drives.  Thermos  Empty camelback or water bottle.  Hat

About the Campus

What is the campus like?

The Alexander Muss High School in Israel (AMHSI) is located in Hod HaSharon, a northern suburb of , on the campus of Mosenson Youth Village.

The AMHSI campus has four coed dormitories, housing 50, 54, 62, and 80 students, depending on the building. The dorms are equipped with full shower and bathroom facilities. There is a recreation room in each of the dorms with modest kitchen facilities, including a microwave, refrigerator and kitchenette. The madrichim (counselors) also live in the dorms where they will be available to assist the students with their needs at any time.

The campus also has a spacious library, music room, computer lab, and kosher dining room and infirmary. There is a basketball court, a gym/fitness room and running track that the students share with the Israeli teens studying on campus.

What really makes AMHSI a unique program is the ability to use Israel as a living textbook!

16

What is available on campus?

1. On campus banking

AMHSI JNF Visa Prepaid Debit Card

We are pleased to introduce the AMHSI JNF Visa Prepaid Card to help further our mission to promote, build, and strengthen bonds between youth and Israel.

The AMHSI Visa Prepaid Card can be used anywhere that Visa Debit Cards are accepted, in Israel, the US, and abroad. It is a safe way to pay while traveling. It can also be used to withdraw cash from ATMs. Students can use a parent’s card or you can even order a secondary card for an AMHSI student to use while they are in Israel to make sure they have the money they need.

AMHSI has negotiated a very favorable price for our students' parents as well as for AMHSI alumni. The card is free for the first two months and there is no enrollment fee, or fees to use the card. You can obtain customer service, or get access to your account on-line. The $3.95 monthly fee after the first two months is waived if more than $800 is deposited on the card in any given month. The fee for an ATM withdrawal is $2.50 and a balance inquiry is $0.75. Importantly, any purchases or withdrawals made overseas including Israel are converted at the wholesale rate for currency conversions. These fees are per account, not per card ordered.

To apply for the AMHSI JNF Visa Prepaid Card, simply go online to www.jnf.getdebitcard.net and use Promo Code AA0045. It only takes a moment to apply and you will receive a personalized reloadable card, with the AMHSI and JNF logos on it, within 5-7 business days. To apply for your card, please use your personal info and your student’s name in the “Name on Card” Field.

The easiest way to load the card is from any credit card or other debit card, or a linked bank account. It can also be loaded by check using the Ingo Money mobile app, which can be downloaded from the Apple App or Google Play store.

And the good news for us? AMHSI will receive a donation for every new account opened by one of our parents or alumni!

We hope you will take advantage of this great opportunity.

17

2. Home hospitality Home hospitality is a very positive educational experience. Students who will be visiting friends and family are encouraged to invite classmates who may not have such relationships in Israel. The school has limited ability to arrange for host families but will do its best to accommodate student requests.

While on home hospitality, students must have adult supervision and written approval from their parent(s).

3. Laundry service

Once a week, community laundry is available on campus. It is usually returned two days after drop off. Laundry bags are provided by AMHSI. To ensure you get your own personal items back, please make sure all your garments are labeled with your name.

4. Celebrating birthdays

The dormitory madrichim (counselors) organize a modest celebration for all birthdays that fall during the AMHSI session. Because we want every student to have an equally memorable experience, please do not ask the Israel staff to arrange for special cakes, etc. for your student’s birthday.

5.Toranut

This is a Hebrew word which means “taking turns at community chores”. Each student will be asked to perform a variety of community chores such as helping in the dining hall, cleaning up common areas in the dormitory, helping out on tiyulim (field trips), etc. This is for the benefit of the entire group.

18 6. Policies on Kashrut, Dress Code, and Shabbat: CESJDS Senior Capstone Trips  During all scheduled programming on the Senior Capstone Trips, AMHSI will provide meals and snacks congruent with CESJDS kashrut policies listed in the Student/Parent Handbook. o Appropriate time will be ensured between meat and dairy foods provided by AMHSI. o On campus, participants are expected to adhere to AMHSI’s kashrut policies for AMHSI campus facilities. o Off campus, participants may make their own decisions regarding kashrut for foods purchased with their own money.  Though the CESJDS dress code is not in force on the Senior Capstone Trips, participants are expected to adhere at all times to AMHSI’s dress code. In addition, AMHSI may require specific dress for particular religious and/or cultural activities. For example, male participants may be required to cover their heads to enter a synagogue. Be prepared!  During group Shabbatot and open Shabbatot spent on AMHSI’s campus, Shabbat will be observed in all public areas. o All organized activities must be appropriate for those who keep Shabbat. o No electronics (including phones) may be used in public spaces, even during free time. o Each room will decide its expectations regarding Shabbat observance within the room. Time should be allotted for these conversations for Shabbatot spent both on and off campus. o Participants may not use transportation or money during group Shabbatot or open Shabbatot spent on campus.  Participants make their own decisions regarding kashrut and Shabbat observance when away for open Shabbatot.

19 Spending Money

How much money should I bring? A suggested guideline for student discretionary spending is $100 per week. Please note there is an ATM on the Hod Hasharon campus. Parents are encouraged, however, to speak to their teenager about their experience for spending while on the program. Soon after your arrival, you will have an opportunity to deposit or exchange any cash dollars you brought with you. You will also turn in four envelopes you should have brought:

. $40.00+$110.00. This is your "going home" money which should cover your second piece of luggage from Israel and $40.00 cash as emergency money for spending if need be at the airport. It will be returned to you at the airport, prior to your departure. . $30.00. A deposit to cover any loss or damage you may incur during your stay. This will be returned to you after the final inspection on the last day if you have no outstanding losses or damages. . $10.00 Deposit for a lock for your cabinet. It will be returned at the end of the session when you return the lock and key. . $50-$100 Spending money for Prague – Poland . $60 if you wish to purchase linens and towels

Communications

Telephone Parents and family are encouraged to arrange for cell phone rental. We strongly recommend that all students participate in a plan which provides uniform, networked cellular phones. This enables our office to reach all students immediately and simultaneously in all circumstances.

To order your phone, you can complete the online order form here. You can contact TalkNSave via email at [email protected] one week before your departure to obtain your cellular phone number.

Parents, please understand that students are asked to turn off their phones during the school day. Likewise, they are not to use their cell phones after ‘lights out’ at midnight.

20 Computer Lab

The computer lab is open each day until 10:30PM. Computers are for email and schoolwork only.

Mail

Plan ahead and be prepared - letters sent by mail can take between 6-10 days to arrive. The mailing address of the campus is: Name of Student Name of Dormitory c/o AMHSI Box 322 9 Aliyat Hanoar Street Hod Ha’ Sharon, Israel 45102

Sending packages

Shipping packages to Israel can be costly, and certain items are subject to a customs fee. Please keep in mind that the only customs location for handling small packages is far from the campus and it can take up to two weeks to get the package released.

You are advised not to send any item(s) worth more than $100 as you will be charged a customs fee for any declared value over that amount whether the item is new or used.

We strongly urge that you not send packages to the students unless there is absolutely no alternative. Whatever you wish to send is probably available in Israel, or there is a good alternative. When adding the expense of sending the package and the time it takes for delivery, it is usually not worthwhile doing so. Packages often get held up in customs, sometimes not arriving until after students return home, and also often have heavy taxes and surcharges added to them. This adds to the expense and time of delivery.

To send packages: Name of Student Name of Dormitory c/o AMHSI 9 Aliyat Hanoar Street Hod HaSharon, Israel 45102

Medical Matters

Medical issues

1. Medical Questionnaire Form If you have not had a physical within the past 12 months, please schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. • Your doctor must completely fill out and sign the Medical Questionnaire Form which is in the online application. • Normal immunizations must be up-to-date. (No special immunizations are required at this time to enter the State of Israel)

• Your last tetanus booster must have been administered within the past nine (9) years. • If you have allergies, you must list these allergies in the allergy section of the online application. Allergy injections, as required by Israeli law, must be administered by a physician. We are unable to administer them on campus. Students will be taken to a medical clinic or allergist which will be at parent’s expense. Please note that an allergy is considered a preexisting condition and therefore would not be covered under AMHSI's medical insurance. If there were to be a medical emergency due to the allergy the parent/guardian would need to pay for the medical expense fee. Please also note that certain allergies require additional staff supervision and therefore might incur additional fees.

• You will not be allowed to attend AMHSI unless a properly completed Medical Questionnaire Form is in our possession four weeks in advance of departure.

2. Pre-Existing Medical Conditions

• Students arriving in Israel with pre-existing medical conditions cannot be covered under AMHSI’s medical insurance. • Coverage must be arranged through your current insurance carrier and/or the student must travel on a self-insured basis for pre-existing medical conditions. • All costs incurred by AMHSI as a result of medical services provided in Israel for pre- existing medical conditions are the parents’ responsibility, and must be reimbursed to AMHSI. • Students must bring sufficient medicine for the entire session, as it is both difficult and expensive to get certain medications in Israel. • If medication must be purchased in Israel for a pre-existing medical condition, the expense will be billed to the student/parent(s).

22 3. Communicable Diseases • Failure to pre-disclose information regarding infectious diseases may result in serious difficulties for you and/or other members of the group, and could result in your dismissal from the program. • Your honest disclosure of such information does not mean that you cannot attend the program; however, you will help yourself and AMHSI tremendously by providing this information.

4. Psychological Services Psychological services can be provided by licensed professionals for an additional cost.

5. Medical Insurance Our school medical insurance covers medical and accident treatment. Medical care on campus

The AMHSI infirmary on campus is staffed daily by a registered nurse. The nurse resides on the campus and is available 24 hours for emergencies. Meir Hospital, located 10 minutes from the campus, is used for emergencies and x-rays. Specialists are always available by appointment, and are also available 24 hours a day for emergencies. If a student becomes ill, the madrichim (counselors) will assist the student and be in contact with the nurse. A report will be sent to parents following any visit to the infirmary or to any medical facility. In every case when a student needs to be seen by a physician, the AMHSI staff will be in contact with the parents in order to keep them informed about their teenager’s health.

Medical care off campus In the event that a student gets injured or becomes ill while on tiyul, and requires medical treatment, the AMHSI staff will arrange for the student to be transported with an AMHSI staff member to the nearest medical facility or hospital in order to be examined by a physician. In certain cases, a doctor will make a “house-call” to the site where the group is staying.

Medical care while in Prague/Poland In the event that a student gets injured or becomes ill during the trip to Prague and Poland, and requires medical treatment, the AMHSI staff will arrange for the student to be seen by a doctor or be transported with an AMHSI staff member and a member of the Polish staff, to the nearest medical facility or hospital in order to be examined by a physician. If the student is part of our Israel trip, the students’ health insurance, arranged with our provider in Israel, covers the students for medical care and/or hospitalization while travelling abroad. Students arriving directly from the USA for the Europe only portion of the trip, must be covered by their own USA health insurance.
