GENERAL COURSE REPORT 01 BASIC PARAGLIDING COURSE

GENERAL

1. Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and winter Sports (JIM & WS) is a joint venture between Ministry of Defence, Government of and Department of Tourism Govt. of J&K. Headquarter of the Institute is located at Nunwan, Pahalgam and Sub Centers at Sanasar (near Patnitop), (Doda), Shey (Leh) and one adhoc sub centre at for skiing courses. Over last 28 years the Institute has excelled in different adventure activities like Mountaineering, Skiing, Para Gliding, Rescue, water rafting, short term adhoc adventure courses and Mountain & Tourist Guide courses.

INTRODUCTION

2. Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports,Pahalgam conducted its first Basic Paragliding course with effect from 24 Nov to 30 Nov 2010 in which 37 students participated. The venue was chosen sub centre Sansar and the selection of students was made by the Department of Tourism, Jammu- J&K on district levels to popularize these types of Aero Sports Adventure activities among youth and in the state. All the students completed this 07 days Course successfully. Nominal roll of students is enclosed as Appendix “A” to this report.

AIM

3. To expose the youth to nature, kindling the spirit of adventure, development of personality, character, courage and confidence through adventure activities and sports as well as to boost adventure tourism in J & K State.

STANDARD TO BE ACHIEVED

4. The competence levels expected from students upon completion of the course are as follows:-

(a) Empowered & well development adolescents. (b) National Integrity. (c) Adventurous attitude. (d) High Standard of youth activities & techniques. (e) Achieve harmony through adventure.

OBJECTIVES

5. The competence levels expected from students upon completion of the Para Gliding course are as follows:-

(a) Promote adventure activities in the state. (b) Impart training on technical aspects of adventure activities. (c) Hone Para Gliding skills of individuals. (d) Create environment awareness amongst youth. (e) Building of strong National Bond amongst youth of the country. (f) Promotion of off ground adventure in the State amongst youth.

3 OPENING ADDRESS

6. Opening address was given on the first day of the course by Col Virinder Singh, Principal, Students were introduced to well known history of the esteemed Institute JIM & WS. They were explained about expectations from students, administration of the Institute and safety and security to be observed around Sanasar training camp area. They were also explained the discipline to be observed during training and the expected outcomes of these adventure camps. They were made aware of the risk involved in off ground adventure like paragliding and also the safety measures to be followed to complete the course without facing any undesired incident.

CONDUCT OF TRAINING

7. The students were trained in acclimatization walk, Introduction to Paragliding equipment, Canopy layout its care and maintenance, Familiarization and preparation Pre-flight checks and forward inflation, control familiarization, Direction control, Ground Handling , Principles of Flight and safety, Short Solo flights and Ground Handling, Steering and speed control, understanding the Pilot rating System, Parachute landing falls etc. 4

8. The 07 days training programme of the course is attached as Appendix ”B”.

ACCLIMATIZATION WALK / PHYSICAL EXERCISE

10. The location of the Institute’s sub centre being at approx 6800 ft, though acclimatization was not mandatory, for acquiring physical fitness and mental robustness, initial period was utilized to achieve the same. Acclimatization marches of 1.5 to 3 kms around the place and morning run on hilly terrain were conducted to strengthen the muscles and joints so as to avoid joint and muscle injuries to which human body is prone during Air Adventure Sports.

PHYSICAL EXERCISE

TECHNICAL TRAINING

11. The training was provided in basic skills of Paragliding, Principles of Flight and safety, site and wind assessment ,Pilot rating system ,Parachute landing falls ,control familiarization. The basic paragliding course covered basic skills of paragliding techniques to become an off ground adventurer. At the end of the training students could successfully and safely handle the gliders, narrate the techniques of flight with use of all safety measures. Details of activities conducted are as follows.

(a) CANOPY LAYOUT, CARE & MAINTENANCE

The students were given training in Ground Handing of Para gliders for first three days. After completion of ground training and to the satisfaction of instructors they were given Para gliders to try flights on small slopes of Sanasar.

8 (g) LECTURES

Students were provided fundamental knowledge in the form of lecture cum demonstration on methods of Paragliding.

INSTRUCTORS DELIVERING LECTURES 9 (h) GAMES Students were made to take interest to participate in games like volley ball, badminton, cricket. Through discussions with the instructors they also got familiarized with adventure sports like Mountineering, skiing, and water rafting. Students showed keen desire to undergo training at the institute for the adventure sports in near future. Movies on adventure sports like mountaineering & skiing were run in the auditorium for the

students.

12. The accommodation facility was made in Institute Huts/ Dak Bunglow at Sanasar with good lodging and dining facilities.

13. The students were provided with hygienic and palatable food during the training period with additional energy supplements like fruits, dry fruits and chocolates, juices etc.

14. Keeping in view the harsh conditions and cold and rainy weather during the course, the students were provided with quality equipment and clothing gear for training purpose. They were issued quality clothing like Trek suit, T-shirt, sun-cap, jacket, etc by the institute.

15. Dedicated medical officer and Nursing Assistant of the institute provided medical support to the participants through out the course duration.

PERFORMANCE OF THE COURSE

16. The Institute conducted 07 days Paragliding course with effect from 24 Nov to 30 Nov 2010 for 37 students of Tourism sponsored course. The performance of the trainees was assessed on practical test, written and viva voce by a team of expert instructors constituted by the Institute. The result sheet is attached as Appendix “C”.

OBSERVATION

17. (a) The participants showed marked interest in learning and adopting the Skills of para Gliding.

(b) The participants improved a lot in their physical as well as mental capabilities.

(c) The participants showed keen interest in participating in other courses at JIM & WS.

(d) The students excelled in the final test taken by the Institute to assess their performance & proved themselves as excellent Para Gliders.

RECOMMENDATIONS

18. (a) It is recommended that more youth who are involved in tourism Business may be sent to JIM & WS for Basic Para Gliding course, Advance Para Gliding courses as well as other adventure courses like Mountaineering, White water rafting & Skiing.

(b) Deptt. of Tourism, Jammu and JIM & WS should form a strong bond to promote adventure in Jammu region as well as in J&K state to successfully conquer higher peaks in India and abroad in the coming future by launching Joint Expeditions to pursue the good cause of promoting adventure in Indian youth.

(c) Efforts may be done by the Deptt of Tourism, Jammu to secure some percentage of vacancies in all the adventure courses viz, Mountaineering, Skiing, Para Gliding and Adventure courses.

19. The Photocopies of some of the feedbacks received from the students are enclosed as Appendix “D”, reflecting the goal achieved as per the opinion of students.

GRADUATION CEREMONY

20. The Graduation Ceremony of this first Basic Paragliding Course was held at Sanasar. The Chief Guest was Col Virinder Singh, Principal ,Jawahar institute of Mountaineering and Winter sports ,Pahalgam and the Guest of honor was Shri Tariq Hussain, Asstt Director Tourism (ADT) ,Batote. The chief guest distributed Badges among the successful participants and a mementoes was presented to ADT, Batote as a token of remembrance on behalf of JIM &WS. Speaking on the occasion the chief guest advised the youth to take part in such type of Adventure activities and encouraged them after going such trainings they can start their own business in Paragliding /River Rafting/Trekking etc.

CONCLUSION

22. During the Para Gliding course training was imparted to make the participants confident in Para Gliding and to become technically proficient as trained flyers. It helped the participants in personality development and character building. The participants were also made aware of the environmental changes and its adverse effects in future. They were also introduced to other adventure activities like trekking, Mountaineering, Skiing etc. The performance of the course validates the fact that desired standards of exposure and training in off adventure i.e, Para Gliding and in promoting tourism in the state were achieved.
