Since the late 1990s when we had a balanced budget under President Clinton, federal spending has ballooned out of control and the federal government has made too many promises it can no longer afford. Our budget deficits and the national debt continue to hinder our country’s Mike long-term economic Ross growth. Yes, we need to cut congressional spending for federal programs and activities, also known as discretionary spending, and, I support many of those cuts. However, this type of spending only makes up 15 percent of the federal budget. We have to take a comprehensive approach to our nation’s fi- nances. hanks, Uncle Shorty I don’t remember a lot about my Uncle Dale, other than he couldn’t walk and he would pass out peppermint sticks at my grand parents’ house at Christmastime. He was tall, garner- ing him the nickname Dewayne “Shorty,” and was Holloway always happy. He was a man who enjoyed life, Sports lived life to its fullest Editor and always seemed to be willing to help those around him. I remember asking about why he walked with canes and I was told that his legs were filled with shrapnel - an injury he received during the Korean War. This was around the time that the Six Mil- lion Dollar Man was on TV and I thought it was cool that Uncle Shorty had metal legs like Steve Austin. I never remember hearing him complain about what most would see as a disability. I do remember him joking about driving the security guys crazy at the airport when he would pass through the metal detector. I never really thought about why he was injured when I was a kid. War happens and to be honest it wasn’t really something that was that real to me. It was something you watched on TV or at the movies. We always won and the heroes get to come home to an appropriate welcome. As I grew older, I began to realize that the men and women who served in the military were making immeasurable sacrifices so I might have something that I was taking for granted. What is that you might say? They were providing me with freedom. As a child, I would get up in the morning and eat breakfast, go to school and come home. When I was home I would play in the yard, or read comic books. As I grew older I began to realize that when I got up in the morning, it was to the sound of my mother’s voice, not the sounds of bombs explod- ing. When I ate breakfast, I never had to wonder if I would have enough or if it was safe to eat. When I went to class, I attended a school that provided me with an education that rivals the best in the world, all without wondering if we would make it home at the end of the day. And when I got home I was able to play in a yard that belonged to us. I was able to read a comic book that was free to print whatever they felt creatively compelled to write and draw. To say it simply, I grew to realize that all the little things I enjoyed in life were made possible by my Uncle Shorty and all the other men and women who had done as he had. They answered the call to military duty. I had also come to realize that the images I had of war were not very accurate. When we watched John Wayne dodge bombshells as he stormed the enemy, those bodies that were flying through he Staf of the air would get up at the end of the day and go he Nashville home. Uncle Shorty was one of those bodies and the News bomb wasn’t a prop, it was real. He didn’t get up and walk home. He was carried to a hospital and later sent home with legs that would never sup- port him again. Many didn’t get up at all. They were gathered up and sent home never to hold their children or State Farm kiss their mother again. 400 N. He passed away several years ago and he is missed. With this being an election year we hear a lot said about our freedoms, but most of us never think about what freedom is. As an American we have the right to live our life in the pursuit of happiness. When I want to go to Texarkana to watch a midnight showing of the biggest new movie, I can. When I get up on Sunday morning I can go to whatever church I want, or I can choose to stay home. I have the opportunity to send my children to whatever school I choose and I have the oppor- tunity to work in a field that I enjoy. I even have the freedom to write whatever is on my mind without fear of the government shut- ting me up. Just like you have the freedom to tell me I’m a knucklehead for writing what I did. I could go on and on about what I am free to do, but I will sum it up by saying that I am free to be me.
