December 2007
People Ambssador of South Africa to Israel Middle East Digest Three years without Abu-Ammar Diplomatic Events editor The Diplomatic Club Magazine December 2007 Dear Friends, 2007 was an eventful year, during which the Middle-East –and the rest of the world. This year is now approaching its end. Despite the rapid end of the purely military phase of the Palestinian Conflict, the conflict is still raging, claiming too many lives. In Israel, the signing of the Roadmap has not yet generated the hoped for peace. We wish the Middle-East an active 2008 year focused on peace and development, where hatred dissolves and harmony blooms. To our readers, as always we would like to offer our best wishes for 2008: may your health be obvious (and need no discussion) may your family relations be warm may your friends be loyal may your enemies become your friends (and those who don’t, get lost) may your spam be filtered may your Emails be answered may your papers get published may your wisdom deserve the approval of Confucius, and your folly the praise of Erasmus may your power get shared, your wealth be free from greed and your poverty from envy may we communicate fruitfully across cultures so that our horizons widen and reason replaces violence The Diplomatic Club Magazine requests the pleasure to publish opinions, discussions and articles written by Ambassadors. We are looking forward to develop this idea. As the 2007 is now over, it is time to go back to work about new services for coming 2008 year. -

Body and Ideology Jerusalem Ranked Third After Haifa and Jaffa in the Growth of Sports Clubs
Body and Prior to 1948, there were some 65 athletic clubs in Palestine; approximately 55 of them members of the Arab Palestine Sports Ideology Federation (APSF).1 Jerusalem and its Early Athletics in Palestine environs alone boasted some 18 clubs (half of these were established in the ‘40s). These (1900 - 1948) clubs had a tremendous impact on the lives of Palestinian young people (members were Issam Khalidi mostly, but not exclusively, male), shaping their character and preparing them for social and political involvement. Further, these athletics teams provided a social, national and institutional base for Palestine’s political organization in the first half of the twenty-first century. They developed alongside and in response to Jewish immigration and the Arab- Zionist confrontation. Athletic clubs were important in evoking the Palestinian national consciousness, sustaining connections between villages and cities, and developing ties with groups across the Middle East and parts of Africa. As such, this trend was contested by Zionist forces in Palestine in a struggle played out on the international stage Calisthenics in 1940s Palestine. Source: Before after the re-establishment of the defunct Their Diaspora APSF in 1944. [ 44 ] HISTORICAL FEATURES Body and Ideology Jerusalem ranked third after Haifa and Jaffa in the growth of sports clubs. Palestine’s first football team was organized in 1908 at Jerusalem’s St. George School. (Doctor Izzat Tannous, then a member of the Arab Higher Committee, was one of the players.) In 1909, this team defeated that of the American University in Beirut, then considered one of the best in the region. -

The Politics of Israeli Soccer: a Guide for the Perplexed
The Politics of Israeli Soccer: A Guide for the Perplexed Politics and sports? In America, most sports loyalties seem to be based on local loyalties – go Knicks, Rangers, etc., if you live in New York (sorry, as an old Brooklyn Dodgers fan I can’t include the Yankees in this list). Or the anti-fans – beat LA, or in the latest version – anti-Miami Heat/LeBron James, particularly in Cleveland. However, in much of the rest of the world, politics and sports are very much tied together. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi owns the A.C. Milan football (soccer) team, while Lazio (one of the two Rome teams) was Mussolini’s favorite, and some of its fans are still neo-fascists. When I went to see a Lazio game with my son Adi at the famed Olimpico Stadium in Rome, he warned me that we shouldn’t speak Hebrew in the stands so that we wouldn’t be identified as Jews and Israelis. The fans of other Italian clubs, such as Livorno and Perugia, wave red flags and Che Guevera shirts. In Spain, Real Madrid was Generalissimo Franco’s team, while FC (Futbol Club) Barcelona is a bastion of Catalan culture and nationalism, and some of the players participated in the Spanish Civil War on the Republican side. The president of the club was even murdered by the Falangists. In Israel, which began as a highly politicized society, the origin of most sports teams was also political. There were two major sports associations – Hapoel and Maccabi. Hapoel was founded by and associated with the Histadrut Labor Federation and the Socialist-Zionist movements, while Maccabi was associated with mainstream (centrist) Zionism.
