The season comprises 120 regular-season games, 60 at home and 60 on the road, and will begin on Tuesday, May 4 and run through Sunday, September 19. The Sod Poodles 2021 campaign begins on the road with a Championship rematch against the Tulsa Drillers, Double-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 2021 home opener at HODGETOWN is scheduled for Tuesday, May 18 against the Midland RockHounds, Double-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. “We couldn’t be more excited to announce to our community, the best fans in baseball, that the wait is over and Sod Poodles baseball is officially coming back to HODGETOWN this May,” said Sod Poodles President and General Manager Tony Ensor. “The 2019 season was the storybook year we all dreamt about and now it’s time to create new memories and see the future Major League stars of our new MLB affiliate team, the Arizona Diamondbacks.     Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies Vol. 2, No. 2, June 2005, pp. 107–129 Ritual in the “Church of Baseball”: Suppressing the Discourse of Democracy after 9/11 Michael L. Butterworth Baseball was among the most prominent American institutions to respond to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Tributes at ballparks across the country promised comfort to millions in shock but soon developed into rituals of victimization that affirmed the Bush administration’s politics of war, discouraged the expression of dissenting opinions, and burdened the nation with yet another disincentive to reflect constructively on its response to terrorism. This essay views the aftermath of 9/11 as a quasi-religious social drama in which ballpark tributes became a ritualized vehicle for a belligerent patriotism that sought unity at the expense of democratic discourse. Keywords: Baseball; Democracy; Patriotism; War on Terrorism; Rituals of Victimization On October 12, 2003, the Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins played in the fifth game of baseball’s National League Championship Series. Thousands of Chicago fans, hoping to see their team end a 58-year World Series drought, made their way to Miami’s Pro Player Stadium and provided loyal and raucous support for the visiting Cubs. When the game reached the seventh-inning stretch, Cubs fans enthusiastically began singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” but they were quickly silenced by the stadium’s public address system and the remaining fans who belted out “God Bless America” instead. The NBC World Series will be played August 4 -14, with Wichita hosting the last six days of the event, August 9-14. The first five days will be played in Hutchinson, KS at Hobart-Detter Field, August 4-8. “This is an exciting day for the NBC World Series. Returning to downtown Wichita and playing in Riverfront Stadium gives our teams an experience they’ll never forget,” said Kevin Jenks, NBC Tournament Director. “The Wind Surge understand the tradition of the NBC. Since they arrived in Wichita, their ownership and staff have expressed a desire to have the NBCWS play at Riverfront Stadium.” The NBC World Series was created in 1935 by local sporting goods salesman Raymond “Hap” Dumont. This year will mark the 87th anniversary for the annual tournament. “The NBC has been synonymous with Wichita since its inception in 1935. One of only 7 players in the history of baseball to reach over 3,000 hits and over 450 home runs, the 12- time All-Star is amongst the all-time leaders in hits, home runs and RBI. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001 -- his first year of eligibility. A Williams Scholar at the University of Minnesota, Winfield played both Big Ten basketball and baseball. An All-American in baseball, he was voted MVP of the 1973 College World Series as a pitcher. He is the only athlete ever to be drafted by four professional teams: basketball (ABA Atlanta Hawks and NBA Utah Stars), football (NFL Minnesota Vikings) and baseball (MLB San Diego Padres). In 2007 he was inducted into the first class of the College Baseball Hall of Fame. His professional career took off in 1973 when he joined the San Diego Padres, never spending a day in the Minor Leagues. His next stop: eight All-Star seasons with the New York Yankees. In 1990, he joined the California Angels, followed by a magical year with the Toronto Blue Jays where he drove in the winning run of the 1992 World Series. He returned to his native Minnesota Twins where he the 3,000th hit milestone. He ended his 22-year career after the 1995 season with the American League Champion Cleveland Indians. Dave is currently a studio analyst for ESPN Baseball Tonight, ESPN News and SportsCenter, and a host of the national Baseball Music Project.
