PARISH NEWSLETTER .indd 1 13/02/2020 16:44 LENTEN PREPARATION: Our Cluster of Parishes are holding a Time of Reflection on the Season of Lent in the Parish Centre, Charlestown on Monday 24th February beginning at 8pm. It will last approximately one hour and will be led by Fr. Matthew Martinez, Dominican Friary, Sligo. The Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 26th February. WHAT IS A DIOCESE? The term comes from the Greek dioikesis, meaning the management of a household. In the Roman Empire the word was used for a territory governed by a central city. As the Empire was Christianized, the bishops located in these cities naturally adopted the term to describe the region they governed. In the very beginning of Christianity bishops acted more like parish priests. Christian communities were small, located only in a handful of cities such as Rome, Corinth, Ephesus, Philippi and there were enough bishops to govern each individual community. As Christianity spread bishops were unable to minister to all the spiritual needs of the people in a particular region and ordained priests to become local helpers. These communities led by priests later became known as parishes. Each region, comprised of a bishop at a primary city with a collection of parishes throughout the countryside, became known as a diocese. SEEING YOUR LIFE THROUGH THE LENS OF THE GOSPEL ~ Matthew 5:17-37 In this section of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus proposes standards that go beyond external behaviour. He challenges our inner attitudes. When have you found that living out of inner conviction is more life-giving than keeping up appearances? 2) Jesus applies his teaching to feelings of anger and sexual desire. He suggests that if we do not keep an eye on our feelings and thoughts we will not be able to control our actions. Perhaps you have experienced the truth of this. What has helped you to integrate your feelings so that you were able to live in right relationships with yourself and others? 3) For Jesus, people with genuine authenticity do not need to swear an oath to be convincing. Their ‘yes’ or ‘no’ suffices. Recall people who had this kind of credibility for you. When have you found that your simple, direct and honest communication had a positive persuasive force?

CHILDRENS CORNER In today’s Gospel, Jesus talks about following God’s law of love. He teaches us how we are to show our love and respect for one another. Jesus teaches us how to respond to others with love. When we are angry, we are tempted not to treat people with love and respect. Jesus teaches us not to let our anger lead us to hurt other people unfairly. Some things we can do when we get angry so that we don’t harm others: Pray to God to help us calm down. Wait until we are calmer to talk about what made us angry.
