Today is the celebration of God in Three Persons —Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. This is also a celebration of a doctrine as the Holy Trinity is a foundation of the Christian Church. This feast takes us back to its beginning in the 4th Century. There was a priest named Arius who taught that Jesus was a created being rather than God. Athanasius was the theologian who fought against this teaching and eventually overthrew Arius’ teaching to establish forever that Jesus is God and the Second Person of the Trinity. Immediately various prayers were written to cele- brate the Trinity. Trinity Sunday began to be celebrated in and in the 14th century Pope John XXII extended this celebration to the entire Church throughout the world. Conse- quently, this Solemnity of The Blessed Trinity is celebrated on the First Sunday after Pentecost every year.

This great feast gives us the opportunity to reflect on the importance of the Trinity in our faith and in our lives. The very notion of Three persons in One God is a mystery which continues to this day. This is one aspect of Christianity that must simply be accepted in faith. Of course, we can imagine a set of triplets in our minds who have the same parents but they are still born moments apart from each other and stand as three separate individuals. The Trinity is a unity that has existed as such for all eternity. Some might ask: well, what about the human birth of Jesus in time and space? The answer to that question is that Jesus preexisted our notion of time and space and was already present in the Father’s act of creation. The Father chose to send Jesus through the Incarnation to share our lives and restore our humanity through His Death and Resurrection. This allows us to share in His divinity after death. This act of the Incarnation did not separate Christ from the Trinity but rather points to the fact that God chose to take on our humanity as part of Himself. While Jesus was on earth he also never left heaven. This is an- other of the mysteries that we Catholic and Christians accept on faith.

We should use this opportunity to give thanks to God for caring for us from the begin- ning. God preexisted creation and from that place has loved us even before we were created and each of us was born. God is always present to us and to the millions of persons born in this world each year. This is another mystery that many of us learned years ago in the Baltimore Catechism which stated that God is everywhere. How is this possible? Only by divine grace can I realize that God in three Persons is equally present to us and to every other human being walking the earth. In fact, because there are Three Persons in One God, the Trinity is present to us at all times. In the words of our psalm response for today: “Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own.”

Finally, if summer ever comes, please take the time to enjoy it!

In Christ,

Msgr. Richard Zborowski

Page 5 Mass Intention Book opened for 2018 (http://pwhs.ph/prayer-warriors-of-the-holy-souls/) The prayer of St. Augustine (A.D. 430) for his mother, St. Monica, is another important testimony from the early Church about prayer for the dead. He wrote, “Forgive her too, O Lord, if she trespassed against You in the long years of her life after baptism. Forgive her I beseech You; do not call her to account. Let Your mercy give Your judgment an honorable welcome, for Your words are true and You have promised mercy to the merciful.” (Confessions, Book 9:13) To quote St. Thomas Aquinas, “Of all prayers, the most meritorious, the most acceptable to God are prayers for the dead, because they imply all the works of charity, both corporal and spiri- tual.” St. Anselm reminds us that “a single Mass offered for oneself during life may be worth more than a thousand celebrated for the same intention after death.” The Mass heals the living and the dead.

Page 6 A Church for All Seasons

Earlier this year, designated that Monday the day after Pentecost Sunday was to be an an- nual obligatory memorial honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title as Mother of the Church. The feast of Pentecost having been celebrated last Sunday and the memorial on this past Monday, the text of the decree establishing this memorial is listed below and is provides some history to the development of this title for the Blessed Mother as well as its relevance for the Church and her evangelizing work in our time. In Christ—Fr. Matt DECREE on the celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of the Church in the General Roman Calen- dar The joyous veneration given to the Mother of God by the contemporary Church, in light of reflection on the mystery of Christ and on his nature, cannot ignore the figure of a woman (cf. Gal 4:4), the Virgin Mary, who is both the Mother of Christ and Mother of the Church. In some ways this was already present in the mind of the Church from the premonitory words of Saint Augustine and Saint Leo the Great. In fact the former says that Mary is the mother of the members of Christ, be- cause with charity she cooperated in the rebirth of the faithful into the Church, while the latter says that the birth of the Head is also the birth of the body, thus indicating that Mary is at once Mother of Christ, the Son of God, and mother of the members of his Mystical Body, which is the Church. These considerations derive from the divine motherhood of Mary and from her intimate union in the work of the Redeemer, which culminated at the hour of the cross. Indeed, the Mother standing beneath the cross (cf. Jn 19:25), accepted her Son’s testament of love and welcomed all people in the person of the beloved disciple as sons and daughters to be reborn unto life eternal. She thus became the tender Mother of the Church which Christ begot on the cross handing on the Spirit. Christ, in turn, in the beloved disciple, chose all disciples as ministers of his love towards his Mother, entrusting her to them so that they might welcome her with filial affection. As a caring guide to the emerging Church Mary had already begun her mission in the Upper Room, praying with the Apostles while awaiting the coming of the Holy Spirit (cf. Acts 1:14). In this sense, in the course of the cen- turies, Christian piety has honoured Mary with various titles, in many ways equivalent, such as Mother of Disciples, of the Faithful, of Believers, of all those who are reborn in Christ; and also as “Mother of the Church” as is used in the texts of spiritual authors as well as in the Magisterium of Popes Benedict XIV and Leo XIII. Thus the foundation is clearly established by which Blessed Paul VI, on 21 November 1964, at the conclusion of the Third Session of the Second Vatican Council, declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as “Mother of the Church, that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Mother” and established that “the Mother of God should be further honoured and invoked by the entire Christian people by this tenderest of titles”. Therefore the Apostolic See on the occasion of the Holy Year of Reconciliation (1975), proposed a votive Mass in honour of Beata Maria Ecclesiæ Matre , which was subsequently inserted into the . The also granted the faculty to add the invocation of this title in the Litany of Loreto (1980) and published other formularies in the Collection of Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary (1986). Some countries, dioceses and religious families who petitioned the Holy See were allowed to add this celebration to their particular calendars. Having attentively considered how greatly the promotion of this devotion might encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety, Pope Francis has decreed that the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, should be in- scribed in the Roman Calendar on the Monday after Pentecost and be now celebrated every year. This celebration will help us to remember that growth in the Christian life must be anchored to the Mystery of the Cross, to the oblation of Christ in the Eucharistic Banquet and to the Mother of the Redeemer and Mother of the Redeemed, the Virgin who makes her offering to God. The Memorial therefore is to appear in all Calendars and liturgical books for the celebration of Mass and of the Liturgy of the Hours. The relative liturgical texts are attached to this decree and their translations, prepared and approved by the Episcopal Conferences, will be published after confirmation by this Dicastery. Where the celebration of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, is already celebrated on a day with a higher liturgical rank, approved according to the norm of particular law, in the future it may continue to be celebrated in the same way. Anything to the contrary notwithstanding.
