Getting Hair Extensions - Your Questions Answered

If your hair is thin, taking too long to grow out, or you've always wanted , you've probably considered getting extensions. A lot of people don’t go through with it because they have too many questions about extensions, such as what they would cost or whether or not they would be damaging.

Ryan of Salon Red Brookhaven, who has been styling hair at New York Fashion week since 2005, is here to answer your questions:

How are extensions attached to my hair? Extensions can be attached in various ways, but using keratin bonds is the only damage-free way to go.

Are extensions damaging? Not if they're done using keratin bonds. Other kinds of extensions are damaging. Even the clip-on extensions you buy at the store are more damaging than keratin bonding, which does not damage your hair at all.

How long do they last? You should get your extensions replaced or removed after four months. Five months is the maximum amount of time to keep them in.

How much do they cost? At some salons, keratin bonding can cost as much as $3,000! At Salon Red Brookhaven, extensions by Ryan cost between $700 and $850. The cost depends on the hair you choose to buy and how much time Ryan spends with you.

How long do they take to put in? Ryan spends between 2.5 and 3 hours per session.

If you've invested in hair extensions, you'll want to maintain them. Caring for them properly can keep them looking beautiful for up to five months. Here are some maintenance tips from Ryan Bordelon- Godfrey of Salon Red Brookhaven, who has been doing runway hair for New York Fashion Week since 2005.

Use moisturizing and conditioner. Because extensions are not your natural hair, your scalp is not producing enough oil to keep them moisturized. A moisturizing shampoo and conditioner keeps them looking natural and healthy.

Use a soft bristle brush - no combs. Bristle brushes don't catch in the bonds. Ryan recommends using a Denman brush. Whatever you do, don't use combs!!

Stay away from chlorine and salt water! Just don't swim in that stuff. If you can't stop yourself, load your hair with conditioner first, pile it on your head, and try to avoid getting it wet.

Braid your hair loosely at night. This keeps it tangle-free for the morning.

Style extensions the same way you would normally style your hair (other than using combs, of course). Extensions behave the same way your hair naturally does. However, extended hair takes longer to style simply because there's more of it.

Promotion? Important Meeting? Here’s Your in 3 Steps.

This hairstyle is perfect for the day you get an award at work, have an important meeting, or receive a promotion. It transitions beautifully for cocktails or dinner afterwards with colleagues or friends. Ryan Bordelon-Godfrey of Salon Red Brookhaven is available to create this look for you. If you want to try it yourself, here’s how:

What you’ll need: a band and bobbies the same color as your hair and a big curling iron Optional: moisturizing crème, hairspray, anti-humidity spray

What you’ll do: 1. First, make a fishtail* or French starting at the top right side of your head and ending at the opposite left. Using a crème such as Supershine Light Moisturizing Crème by Oribe helps with hold and sleekness. Use a band the same color as your hair to hold your braid/fishtail in place. Leave your bangs out, as well as any hair you would like to frame your face with.

2. Wrap the end of the braid/fishtail underneath itself and pin it with bobbies that match your hair. If your hair is too long to tuck under, pin it into a low instead. 3. Using a big curling iron, smooth out your bangs and face-framing pieces while slightly curling the ends. To finish, use some hairspray for hold or an anti-humidity spray such as Oribe Impermeable to stop .
