He was one of six children of Edward White Benson (Archbishop of Canterbury, 1882-96) and his wife Mary Sidgwick Benson, sister of the philosopher Henry Sidgwick. Benson was born into a literary family; his brothers included Edward Frederic Benson, best remembered for his Mapp and Lucia novels, and Robert Hugh Benson, a priest of the Church of England before converting to Roman Catholicism, who wrote many popular novels. Their sister, Margaret Benson, was an artist, author, and amateur Egyptologist. The Benson family was exceptionally accomplished, but their history was somewhat tragic; a son and daughter died young; and another daughter, as well as Arthur himself, suffered from a mental condition that was possibly bipolar... Life [ edit | edit source ] Benson was 1 of 6 children of Edward White Benson (Archbishop of Canterbury, 1882-1896) and his wife Mary (Sidgwick), sister of philosopher Henry Sidgwick. His siblings included novelists E.F. Benson and Robert Hugh Benson, and Egyptologist Margaret Benson. The Benson family was exceptionally literate and accomplished, but their history was somewhat tragic. A son and daughter died young; and another daughter, as well as Arthur himself, suffered badly from a mental condition that was probably manic-depressive psychosis, which they had inherited from their father. None of the children ever married. Benson never married, and his diaries suggest that he was gay but asexual. [1] Despite his illness, Arthur was a distinguished academic and a prolific author. He was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. [2] From 1885 to 1903 he taught at Eton, returning to Cambridge to lecture in English literature for Magdalene College.     Margaret Benson (1865-1916) by William Peck The early history of archaeology in Egypt, as elsewhere in the exploration of the Mediterranean world, was entirely dominated by men and essentially closed to women until very nearly the end of the nineteenth century. Those women who expressed a keen interest in the history and antiquities of Egypt were essentially restricted in the employment of their talents to the roles of amateur collector of artifacts, author of travelers' accounts, or as a supportive wife of a male scholar/adventurer. In the study of ancient Egypt it was not until 1895 that a woman was given some measure of authority over her own archaeological project. Margaret Benson, daughter of the presiding Archbishop of Canterbury, was the first woman to be granted permission to conduct her own excavation under a concession awarded by officials of the Egyptian Department of Antiquities. The site in Luxor that drew her attention was the Precinct of the goddess Mut, in its remote location to the south of the temple complex of the god Amun at Karnak. The precinct contained the ruins of three temples and a number of smaller structures but its most distinctive and picturesque feature was a "sacred lake" of horseshoe shape, partly encircling the Temple of Mut in the center of the complex. This temple itself had only been investigated in the most cursory manner until Margaret Benson expressed an interest in exploring it. At the time she began her work Margaret Benson was a thirty year-old woman with no training in archaeology and no experience in excavation.

N 11 SEPTEMBER 1903, FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, A SON OF AN ANGLICAN ARCH- bishop of Canterbury made his submission to Rome.2 The conversion of 1903 won immediate prominence in the religious press, where readers learned that this was a double defection: the subject was not only of a prominent Anglican family, he was also an ordained priest of the State Church. At the center of this furor was a slight man, of modest height, fair-haired, two months short of his thirty-second birthday. He was Robert Hugh Benson, soon to become the most prominent Catholic novelist of Edwardian England, indeed the best-selling author of explicitly Catholic literature in English of the frst half of the twentieth century. Today, however, a century after his reception as a Roman Catholic, Benson is seldom read; his name is restricted to Catholic trivia games, and his life, once internationally lauded, is largely forgotten. Why is this? Why do people today no longer read Robert Hugh Benson? There is ind- eed reason for this neglect, but there is also a compelling argument that he should continue to be read. Hugh, born in 1871, was the fourth and youngest son of Edward White Benson (1829-1896), who would hold the bishopric of Canterbury from 1882-1896.3 With his wife, Mary (Sidgwick), the Archbishop sired six children in all, starting in 1860: two sons, two daughters, then two additional sons.4 The frst-born, Martin (1860-1878), was esteemed for his brilliance of intellect and character.
