FOREWORD

The Micro, Small and, Medium Enterprises, Development Institute (earlier called SISI), under Ministry of MSME, Govt. of India, is one of the prime organizations in , engaged in the promotion and development of Industries in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. As a part of the promotional and developmental activities, the Institute conducts studies on the Status and performance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in the State. The District profile is one such report compiled and updated under District Industry Development Plan of the Institute assigned by Office of the Development Commissioner (SSI), New Delhi. This report contains the present status of economy, geographical information, statistical data relating to MSME’s in each district, salient features of the progress of the different sectors of the each district of Karnataka and performance of industries particularly in Micro, Small and Medium industries.

Industrial Profile of Davangere District

1. Introduction & General Characteristics of the District:

 Located at the centre of Karnataka, about 262 kms from the state capital Bangalore.  Carved out of , and districts.  Spread across 6 talukas Davangere, , , , & Harapanahalli.  Established trading center for maize, paddy, arecanut and gherkin.  Has a good base for Horticulture units of Marigold dye processing and arecanut processing. Agriculture is the highest contributor in the economic development of the district. Soil and climatic conditions favorable for growing horticulture crops. Gherkin processing, marigold dye processing, ground nut oil extraction units are existing in the district. Major food crops Paddy, Maize, Groundnut & Sunflower– Sugarcane and cotton– Mango, Sapota, Banana,Papaya. Main vegetables – Tomato, Onion, Brinjal, Chilli, Gherkin and ladies finger

1.1 Location & Geographical Area.: district is a newly formed district, which came into existence during 1997 by including backward taluks from other three districts viz. Chitradurga, Shimoga and Bellary. Exist at 13˚ 45' to 14˚ 50' East Latitude and 75˚ 30‘ to 76˚ 30' East Longitude and has a geographical area of 597597 hectares.

1.3 Availability of Minerals.

1.4 FOREST : This district has a cover of 89918 hectares under forest. Bamboo forest products are available in Channagiri taluk .

1.5 Administrative set up: Davangere District lies in the Maidan region on the with an area of 5,976 sq. kms. and consists of six taluks viz Davanagere, , Honnali, Chennagiri, Jagalur and Harapanahalli.

1.6 Infrastructure  4 Industrial areas and 2 Industrial estates in the district  400 acres of land been identified for land bank  Proposed an ‘Apparel Park’ of 50 acres, with an estimated cost of US $2.35 million (INR 11 crores) by the Government of Karnataka(GOK)  A Gas based project of 700MW has been approved by the GOK  Proposed an IT Park and Network operation centre through bjoint ventures of private participation and Karnataka Industrial Area development board  Identified as one of the 8 districts to set up a Wind energy generation Plant by the Government of Karnataka  Suvarna Karnataka Development Corridor has proposed the setting up of a Food Processing Zone covering the district, a food park of 100 acres with an estimated cost of US $ 240.833 million (INR 1,156 crores)

Any other important additional information of the district: Tourism  Kalleswara temple of Bagali was built in 9th century AD by the Chalukyas, the temple is famous for its intricate carvings.  Sri Harihareswara temple, situated on the bank of the river Tungabhadra at Harihar, the temple has 60pillars with enchanting carvings.  Eshwara Temple was constructed by King Trubhuvana Malla Parameshwara in 1120 AD, it is famous for the pillars and sculptures built in Chalukya style.  Sri Ragavendra Swamy Mutt, situated on the bank of river Tungabhadra at Honnali, is popularly known as second Mantralayam.  Sri Chennagiri Rangappa Clock Tower is an attractive tourist spot, the highlight of this place is the height of the clock tower which is 75 feet.  Hodigere is a Tomb of King Shri Shahaji father of Chatrapathi Shivaji.  Shantisagar is one of the 2nd largest tank in South Asia known for its panoramic view.
