Letter from the Editor As I look out of the window this morning, I see yet another dark grey sky. It’s been weeks now since we’ve properly seen sunshine. Even Ginger, our 18 year old cat, has got cabin fever. To be honest, he has been going stir crazy with the incessant rain. He thinks that by asking to go out every five minutes the weather will have miraculously changed. The look of dismay on his face when I open the door and it’s still raining beggars belief!

Rennie Grove Hospice Care’s Light Up a Life services during November and December are an uplifting way to come together with your friends and family to remember someone special.

Lisa Makey, Head of Family Support at Rennie Grove said: “Please join us at one of our Light up a Life services. They are open to everyone, not just those touched by hospice care. At each of our services you can sponsor a light to shine in memory of your loved one. Everyone who sponsors a light will receive a beautiful card that includes a silver “in loving memory” star that you can hang on your own Christmas tree. Everyone making a Light up a Life general donation will receive a card too.

hiyabucks.com | 15 REVIEW By Helen Gerrish, Editor Relax and let the pampering begin

The friendly welcome, relaxing ambience and calming massages left us with a sense of peaceful happiness we haven’t felt in a while. You can’t beat a really good massage and facial can you? Even siting here, writing this, is an effort as my muscles are so relaxed I feel like I should be lounging and not working. Brandy and Rachael, our two therapists, worked their magic today. Tailoring full body massages to our specific requirements, we were pampered to the hilt and back. Such was the effort needed to get up off the bed, only our rumbling tummies persuaded us to head to the restaurant for a spot of lunch (and a slice of chocolate Jaffa cake!). Don’t underestimate this brand new spa on the Penn Road. We were surprised by how many treatment rooms there were, alongside bright open spaces for manicures and pedicures, overlooking the Buckinghamshire countryside. There are many treatments to choose from with the Spa Massage from £28 for 30 minutes, facials from £38 for 45 minutes and a natural spray tan from £25. Of course, they also offer all the usual things you would expect from a spa including waxing, reflexology, lash lifts and extensions, Jessica nails, eye treatments and hot stone massage to name a few. Plus, they even offer specific treatments for men with prices ranging from just £20. Think pampering and prosecco on a Friday night with a group of friends. Kay and her professional therapists are on hand to help you have the best time with specific packages for your special celebration, or just a night out with the girls, we don’t need an excuse do we? Now don’t just take our word for it, go and see for yourself!

hiyabucks.com | 19 Protect yourself and your family against the flu This year the flu vaccines available will provide even better defence against the virus.

Health and social care services across Buckinghamshire are appealing to the public to ensure that they vaccinate themselves, their children or relatives, as soon as they can. The flu vaccine is offered free on the NHS to:

• All children aged 2-10 years • Everyone aged 65 and over • All pregnant women • People aged under 65 with certain health conditions

The vaccine for people aged under 65 will protect against four strains of the virus. For over 65’s there is an enhanced vaccine that offers more protection designed to help the immune system develop a strong defence against the flu virus. This year every primary school child will be offered a flu vaccine. Children are ‘super spreaders’ of flu. Flu vaccination not only protects the children, but it also protects other more vulnerable members of the community from a potentially horrible illness. If you are not eligible for a free flu jab many pharmacies will provide the vaccine as a private service for a small fee. Let’s ‘myth bust’ a few common misconceptions about flu and the vaccine: “Getting the flu vaccine will give me a mild version of the illness” FALSE: The flu vaccine does not contain any live virus so you cannot get the flu from the vaccine. Some people may experience a very mild fever or mild aches and pains after having the vaccine but this is an immune system response and simply shows the vaccine is working. “I don’t need the vaccine as I never catch the flu” FALSE: You may have been lucky enough not to have caught the flu previously, or have been vaccinated in the past, but unfortunately this doesn’t mean you’re immune to the flu. “Getting the flu isn’t that bad – it’s like a common cold” FALSE: The symptoms of the flu virus can be much worse than a cold and can make even healthy people feel really poorly for a few days (although the majority of people will get better on their own after a few days in bed). “It’s January and I haven’t had the flu yet so I’ll be OK this year” FALSE: Cases of the virus tend to peak around December and January so if you’re exposed to it you may still develop the illness. It’s best to get vaccinated during the Autumn so your immunity develops before the main flu season.

hiyabucks.com | 21 Let’s all do our bit …

A brilliant opportunity to more widely recycle everyday items Following the Editor’s plea in October’s magazine on where to recycle old pens, Kate Lillie has kindly emailed hiya bucks about a charity her daughter, Tamsin, runs https://www.medictomedic.org.uk/. Medic to Medic have a comprehensive recycling scheme for a wide variety of household goods with money raised going towards the work M2M does in educating medical professionals. The following items can be dropped off at R M Terry Newsagents, 89 Sycamore Road, Amersham:

If you would like to find out • Toothbrushes and toothpaste more about the work Medic to tubes Medic does in Malawi please • Empty crisp packets contact Tamsin via tamsinlillie@ • Bread bags yahoo.co.uk. She is currently in Malawi on a monitoring visit. • Egg boxes Additional recycling information • Confectionary recycling can be found on TerraCycle and • Writing instruments and Recycle4Charity. ink cartridges

ThanksTh to Kate on answering the question on where to recycler felt tip pens and highlighters. It is so important thatt we do as much as possible to keep our planet greeng and recycle as many items as possible. R M Terry NewsagentsN are to be commended for makingm this recycling option possible sos please spread the word by passing ono this information to your friends and neighboursn and, who knows, maybe some otherot newsagents can be persuaded to taketa up responsibility by assisting in the recyclingrec of the packaging of the many productsprodu they sell.

Empty egg boxes can also be taken to Lacey’s Family Farm Shop in Lane End for use by customers purchasing fresh eggs. They have a lovely farm shop; it’s well worth the visit.

If you have any handy tips or hints for doing our bit by using less plastic, or reducing our carbon footprint, please get in touch. You can email me at [email protected].

On Wednesday 20th November 2019 at 8pm Nicola Turner Inman will present CHINOISERIE: THE ART OF THE EXOTIC IN THE ROYAL COLLECTION

In this talk the audience will be taken on a journey through ‘Chinoiserie’ pieces in the Royal Collection, looking at what the term means and what different styles it took form in, concentrating on the Decorative Arts, mainly on the Oriental porcelain in the Collection. The talk will focus on those royal patrons and their collecting preferences and passions and what national and international forces such as political and diplomatic events drew them to collect such objects at the time and help them shape the Collection into what it is today. Nicola Turner Inman will also be focusing on the generous loan by HM The Queen to the Royal Pavilion in Brighton of objects from the East Wing of Buckingham Palace which is on display from September 2019.

Nicola Turner Inman is the Assistant Curator of Decorative Arts (Projects) at Royal Collection Trust. She read Art History at the University of St Andrews and graduated with a MA Hons. She then did an internship at the Royal Collection Trust before joining Christie’s in London where she spent time working in the Print Department before undertaking a post-graduate Diploma at Christie’s Education. She then worked at Gurr Johns, a leading client advisory and art valuation firm before returning to the Royal Collection Trust in 2013 as Assistant to the Deputy Surveyor of The Queen’s Works of Art. She took on her present role in 2018 and has been involved amongst other things the Reservicing of Buckingham Palace including project managing the recent loan of objects from the Palace by HM The Queen to the Royal Pavilion.

Let’s investigate the humble banger. Sausages were nicknamed “bangers” during the second world war. Due to the scarcity of other ingredients their high water content meant they often exploded during cooking as the water turned to steam!

The word sausage comes from the middle English “sausige” evolving from sal, which is Latin for salt. In France they are sausissons and in Germany wurst. 250g plain flour ¼ tsp bicarb of soda 2 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground nutmeg 100g butter 70g light brown muscovado sugar 60g golden syrup 1 small egg icing sugar sprinkles

Combine the dry ingredients; flour, bicarb, ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg. In a separate bowl, use a fork to mix together the butter and sugar. Add the golden syrup and the egg. Sift the dry ingredients into the wet mixture and combine using a wooden spoon. Bring the ingredients together using your hands. You should now have an even textured dough. If the dough is really soft, cover the bowl with Clingfilm and place in the fridge to firm up. Preheat the oven to 170˚C /160˚C Fan. Remove the dough from the fridge and place on a lightly floured work surface. Roll the dough out to about 5mm thick. Use a cookie cutter, or a selection of your choice, to cut as many shapes as you can from the rolled dough. Place the biscuits onto lined baking trays and bring together the leftover dough. Repeat the rolling and cutting process until you have used all of your dough. Bake the gingerbread in the oven for 12-15 minutes until lightly golden. They will remain soft for the first few minutes – don’t be afraid and over cook them. After a few minutes, turn the biscuits onto a wire rack to cool. Now for the fun part: Once cool, decorate your gingerbread biscuits however you like. I like to pipe icing (150g icing sugar + 1tbsp water) onto them and cover with sprinkles! hiyabucks.com | 49 Kitchen Design Tricks: How to Make Your Kitchen Look and Feel Bigger

Over the last few decades, kitchens are now often multifunctional places and, as such, places that we pride ourselves on. Though we may all wish for a huge open-plan kitchen with all the kitchen storage space our hearts desire, that is rarely what we have at our disposal. As a room used for so many essential purposes, keeping the kitchen clean and comfortable can often feel like an impossible task. Here, we offer up some kitchen design tricks into optimising your kitchen so that it looks and feels more organised and spacious. Colours: Colours, of course, have an enormous impact on our perception. They dictate how we perceive the shape and ambience of a space. For this reason, kitchen colour schemes frequently use bright, neutral colours like whites and greys, and pastel shades. A kitchen shouldn’t have too many varying shades. A kitchen with one predominant light colour, or a few of a similar shade, will feel open and expansive. Neutral colours don’t clash with each other but blend together, erasing visual boundaries and making a space feel bigger and less enclosing. Lighting: There is no point in a well-organised kitchen if it is lacking in sufficient light. A well-lit small kitchen can look more comfortable and welcoming than a huge kitchen if it is poorly illuminated. Natural lighting is vital. It makes you feel connected to the outside and makes the room feel freer. You can make the most of any windows you do have by removing obstacles and making them the centrepiece. Along with natural light, a good overall electric lighting system is a necessity for those late nights spent cooking. Ceiling lighting systems like recessed LED lights or track lights provide optimum illumination in the centre of your kitchen. Storage: You want your kitchen to be a smoothly functioning workspace, but you don’t want to overdo it with too much furniture and appliances. It’s all about getting it right by utilising the most efficient solutions. Take, for example, the pull-out bin. The bin tucks away behind closed doors and is out of site, freeing your floor of an unnecessary obstacle, making your kitchen feel bigger. Open shelves and glass-doored cabinets are brilliant at expanding a room. It might feel like only a fraction of extra space, but it definitely opens up your kitchen and stops head-high cupboards from feeling enclosing.
