A Volunteer’s Perspective: Achieving Universal Pre-Primary Education, One Child at a Time By Trang Chu Minh

he ability to go to school is often taken for granted, but not for children in some of Jakarta’s worst neighbourhoods, many of whom would have been Tstripped of this fundamental right, if not for the support of organisations such as Wadah Foundation.

I was blessed with the opportunity to visit Pusat Kegiatan Masyarakat (PKM) Wadah Al Hidayah, the oldest and earliest community supported by Wadah Foundation. There, I was able to speak with Teacher Hasan Azhary, the man behind the miraculous transformation of a place previously dubbed as one of Jakarta’s worst slums.

The marginalised community, located in the slums of Waduk Pluit in North Jakarta, has been supported by Mrs Anie Djojohadikusumo since 1996, long before they officially established their family Foundation formerly known as the Yayasan Keluarga Hashim Djojohadikusumo (YKHD), now Yayasan ARSARI Djojohadikusumo (YAD). In 2008, Wadah Foundation introduced its education and healthcare programmes offering pre-school and tutorial activities for children as well as Qur’an reading classes, art performances and religious programmes for parents.

In 2011 primary school enrolment rates reached 99% in Indonesia, which translates into 27 million children attending elementary school. The nationwide figure doesn’t, however, reflect the discrepancy between affluent, urban areas and poor, rural regions where enrolment rates continue to lag behind at below 60%.

Statistics also don’t tell you the story behind these figures, the struggles and successes, the setbacks and triumphs of these children. They don’t explain that in order to get accepted into grade one, you need to pass a basic numerical, reading and writing test, which makes participation in pre-school programmes quintessential. 6 | Wadah Chronicles | August 2017

“ Three core values – “be grateful, be patient, be committed” - were what kept him going, and are the principles that continue to underpin his teaching.

High birth rates, coupled with a shortage in school Azhary. “I saw an old man surrounded by children who were infrastructure and qualified teachers, pose a significant threat completely taken by the simple magic tricks he was teaching to the Indonesian education system, which is classified as the them – it was then that I understood that in order to drive third biggest in Asia and the fourth largest in the world. Civil home the importance of education, I needed to capture the society organisations such as Wadah Foundation play a critical attention of the children and get parental buy-in first.” role in addressing these challenges. Three core values – “be grateful, be patient, be committed” It’s no exaggeration that Teacher Azhary was the “first - were what kept him going, and are the principles that adopted child of Ibu Anie”, a term of endearment often used continue to underpin his teaching. to describe Anie Harjati Djojohadikusumo, the Founder of Wadah Foundation. Teacher Azhary moved to Jakarta from the island of Lombok with the vision of using education to steer children towards a righteous path.

These children had never had the chance to go to school before - their daily “tasks” consisted of picking up fish discarded on the ground in the markets or steal straight from the back of fishermen who were returning with their catch of the day. Instead of starting pre-school, children between the ages of 5 and 7 were reduced to slavery and forced into theft.

An estimated 2.7 million children in Indonesia are involved in some form of forced labour - roughly half of them are under the age of 13. Almost half of children aged between 5 and 14 who work are exposed to at least one of 14 serious hazards, L-R: Trang Chu Minh, William Gunawan, Hasan Azhary, Mohammad Ali ranging from working with dangerous objects to unhealthy working environments. They are more likely to drop out of school or not even enrol in the first place, and hence are hindered from reaching their full potential. With newfound vigour and drive, he developed a curriculum that combined the usual reading and writing classes with Children in Al Hidayah faced a similar predicament. How could interactive leisure activities. It took one parent to see the Teacher Azhary persuade the parents of these children to let long-term value of his educational initiatives for the rest of them attend his classes and in the process lose an important, the community to give him their blessing – and the inspiring albeit illegal, source of income for the family? It wasn’t stories shared by his former students are countless. uncommon for parents to threaten him with his life. Ali moved to Al Hidayah at the age of 9 – at a time when the “After three years of fruitless efforts, I was on the brink of slum was considered a haven for thieves, gangsters and petty giving up and returning to Lombok. It was that day, as I stood criminals. He was one of only ten children taught by Teacher at the station waiting for my train to depart, when I had an Azhary, a programme that now counts 121 children in its unexpected moment of enlightenment”, shares Teacher classrooms. They normally cap the numbers at 120, but the parents of the last student to enrol have begged Teacher Azhary to let their son attend – a complete turnaround in attitude compared to the initial weariness and hostility shown towards him.

Ali was accepted into high school and was able to complete his studies thanks to a scholarship offered by Wadah Foundation. He graduated with a degree in International Relations and has worked as an internal auditor for CIMB Niaga for three years. Without Wadah’ s support, he would have likely never finished high school, let alone get accepted into a stable job. Yet despite the undeniable perks offered by the corporate world, Ali followed his calling and returned to work in the Al Hidayah community.

“I was fortunate enough to walk this journey, so it’s only natural for me to give back to the community.” When asked what he enjoys most about working in Al Hidayah, his answer, “the ability to save my people”, really tugs at the heartstrings.

Wadah Foundation currently operates 55 communities and 35 pre-school programmes. I look forward to visiting each and all of them to shed light on the incredible difference they make to some of Indonesia’s most vulnerable populations.

A Visit to Wadah Malaysia: Destiny Home School in Klang, Selangor By Raof Shan

ast April 12, 2017, Wadah Foundation’s Director for International Affairs/WIC Co-Chair, Alfredo (Al) Torno III, visited a Wadah Malaysia-assisted community, the LDestiny Starting Point Welfare Association (DSP) home school or the Destiny Home School in Klang, Selangor.

During our visit, we were received by the school’s assistant administrator, Ms Sonia Stephen. At that time, there were about 25 students of different ages attending in various classes conducted by volunteers. Al was introduced to Sonia and she discussed her role and the school’s mission and objectives. He also managed to record a brief presentation by Sonia.

Sonia is our hero at Destiny Starting Point Welfare Association. As the Secretary General of the Wadah Global Gathering (WGG), Alfredo has invited Sonia to become one of the speakers at the 2018 Wadah Global Gathering which will be held in Jakarta in March 2018. Get to know more about Sonia and Destiny Home School at the next WGG!

Following is an extract of Sonia’s brief presentation.

“My name is Sonia Stephen. I am 21 this year and I live in Klang, Selangor, West Malaysia. Firstly I would like to thank Wadah Foundation for giving me an opportunity to speak up on my thoughts of what I am currently doing and our aspirations of Destiny Home School the way I look at it. I come from a family background where my dad, Stephan Swamuthasan is a Senior Pastor, at Destiny Christian Association Church and my mum, Grace Line does all the administration work. My parents are tirelessly involved in social work for more than 10 years - working with troubled teens and kids, especially girls and boys who are messed up in juvenile problems and who are actually neglected and rejected by family and society. But when they step into Destiny Starting Point Welfare Association (DSP), we see them as someone who is able to make a difference for themselves, society and family. August 2017 | Wadah Chronicles | 9

The school’s mission is to provide a continuing education to marginalised kids who have dropped out of school.

One of the main objectives is to assist the DSP in-house students to catch up with the regular government school children so that they will be accepted to continue with their education at the said government run school.

I am very happy to assist them in whatever way I can. To me, it’s my privilege to do social work. I find satisfaction in helping to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, protects the children, advocate for the infirm, counsel the distressed, and also educate the homeless.

One of the main criteria in DSP is education. Like a saying, Education is a foundation of a man’s life, so our first step is to build a good foundation, because education is a preparation Sonia teaching students at Destiny Home School for life. Therefore we have a specific place for this teens and kids to learn and get educated; the place is called Destiny Home Schooling. We have few educators working along with us, as volunteers. When I say volunteers, that means ‘they are not expecting anything in return for what they do but only give of what they little have’. “

HEALTH Communication, Coordination, Information and Action!

By Robby Reppa

ue to weather abnormality, floods and landslide hit Ambon City in Maluku province. Towards the end of June 2017, heavy rain downpour caused floods and Dlandslides in the city of Ambon and nearby areas affecting two Wadah communities, namely; PKM Wadah Darasy and Rinjani.

Houses at Darasy Village affected by the landslide PKM WADAH DARASY

or three consecutive days (10 to 12 Juni 2017), heavy rains flushed Ambon posing huge threat of potential landslides to the residents of Alor Tantui. Alor Tantui is Fa small village in Ambon where Wadah’s Darasy community is located. At that time, there was an on-going road widening and expansion being undertaken on the upper side of the hamlet. In disaster management, construction development has been identified as one of the factors greatly affecting disaster risk management most especially for those project that do not comply with environmental requirements of the government. Geographically, the position of Wadah’s Darasy community is below the Ambon highway level. The village is located in a small valley or canyon, called Alor in their local Houses at Darasy Village affected by the landslide language.

When the road construction project started between April and May, people living in Alor Tantui have regularly been threatened by landslides. Fortunately, with such awareness and cooperation among community residents, such threats have been properly anticipated. Wadah Ambon having all the capabilities to mobilize residents and close coordination with the local government, they were able to minimize the negative impact of the road development works with the community living nearby the projects. The project team as assisted by the local government officials was also cooperative during the process. Through Wadah Regional Coordinator, Kiky Samal assisted by PKM Wadah Rinajni Coordinator Warni, Ustad Idin, and volunteers of Wadah Ambon, they successfully created a temporary drainage to thwart possible landslides which could have gravely affected those communities situated in low lying areas. Still resilient despite the difficulties 22 | Wadah Chronicles | August 2017

FLOODS INUNDATE PKM WADAH KAMPUNG RINJANI

t the same time, PKM Wadah Kampung Rinjani also experienced flooding as it is is located in a low lying residential area. Geographically, this village is irrigated Aby a small river where when the rainfall is high, water from the river overflows flooding people’s houses.

When this uneventful incident occurred due to high rainfall activity, river water overflowed causing flood to the community. However, due to the alertness and agility of Rinjani Village Coordinator, Warni, assisted by Ustad Idin, and volunteers from the PKM Wadah Kampung Rinjani, Mama Jima and other tutors, they all rushed to help the people whose houses were affected by the flood. Four houses were affected by river overflow. One of the houses affected is owned by a Wadah martial arts tutor, Andika. Through rapid coordination and communication with the local government, Warni managed to secure equipment, tarpaulin tents, hoes and sacks. Volunteers of PKM Wadah and the Secretariat of Wadah Ambon together with the villagers of Rinjani immediately acted and cleaned the houses. They also used PKM Wadah Kampung Rinajani preschool as a temporary shelter for residents who have been affected by the flooding. Wadah Head Office for its part conducted intense monitoring and kept people informed of any action that needed to be done. Through its coordinator, Wadah also provided logistical support to the community like rice and other aids to those who are in need as well as people who were fasting at that time.

LESSON LEARNED

here are several lessons learned from the action and services being rendered by Darasy dan Kampung Rinjani Wadah Ambon, these are: cooperation, Tproper coordination and communication with various stakeholders. Wadah Ambon was able to provide complete services to the community because it is a part of the community. But for some of the volunteers are not residents of the community, they have willingly showed their care and support to everyone who needed a helping hand when they needed them most. Most of all, proper communication and coordination, timely information, and speedy action should always be observed.

EDUCATION Franki Changed My Life (A Note From The Preschool Graduation in 2017)

By Yohanes Ghewa

adah Foundation witnessed the graduation of 373 pre-school children (PAUD) during the last school- year 2016 - 2017. The children are from the four WWadah regions, broken down as follows: 200 children from Region I (Jakarta, West Java, and Banten), 32 children from Region II (Yogyakarta, East and West Java), 64 children from Region III (East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, and Bali) and 77 children from Region IV (Ambon, Maluku, North Maluku, and Papua).

There are 1001 stories behind every joyful celebration of a graduation ceremony and every story is meaningful which greatly impacts both the student and the institution of which the story takes place. This year, PAUD Bunda Peduli in the Belo sub-district, Maulafa district, Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara successfully graduated 14 pre-school children. The organizers, parents and all the attendees in the event hope that all the children who joined the ceremony shall be successful and will be instrumental in making a brighter Indonesia in the near future.

Ignatius Franki Naiheli, otherwise called as Franki, made this year’s graduation ceremony at Bunda Peduli Belo Pre-school in Jalan RCTI Number 8 in Kota Kupang different from that of last year. Like his friends, Franki wore a sarong from a Timorese woven cloth. There is nothing particularly special about Franki. He is a typical Timorese child, dark skin, curly hair with a small posture. During the ceremony on Wednesday, June 14, 2017, he sat in the front row.

Generally, in a graduation ceremony, everyone would rejoice. Similarly, it also happened in Bunda Peduli pre-school that day. What made it different for almost everyone who were present at the ceremony was the heartwrenching, deep happiness in Franki’s story as narrated by his mother. August 2017 | Wadah Chronicles | 25

alone with our relatives who came from the village to visit us. He usually spends his time hanging out with his friends while drinking sopi and playing cards (gambling). He was not at home on that New Year’s Eve.

During the mass, Franki looked nervous. His eyes searched around and found that most of his friends were sitting side by side with their father and mother. He looked moody and unenthusiastic, when the fireworks begun and saw children of his age running around, enjoying the celebration of the New Year's Eve.

Upon arriving back home, we found his father drinking while having fun with our relatives. His father then asked Franki what he wanted to have for the New Year. I knew very well that his father would have been found it difficult to meet Franki's request, as we are poor people. My husband is a mason has no permanent job thus his income is uncertain. But something happened unexpectedly. Franki braced his father's arms and Yudit, Ibu Yohana, Pak Franics and Franki whispered as he sobbed in tears. He wrapped his arms around his father's neck. Franki did not ask for a bike or new clothes. "I am Yohana Nenosaban, Franki’s mom. He is the younger of Nor demanded to buy delicious food and fireworks. It was all two siblings. His sister, named Yudit Tiara Naiheli, is a Wadah too much for him and for our family. 'Dad, please go to church, tomorrow, together with mama, I am a “violent” person, often cursing and yelling; calling Yudit and me, he said sobbingly in the midst of rowdy and children's names by shouting. One day after returning from laughter of relatives who were each holding a glass of sopi school, Franki hugged me and said, “... mama we have very kelapa that had not yet been finished. friendly and kind-hearted teachers in school. Ibu Yohana tells the story with tears in her eyes. father's answer. I never expected him to answer, let alone said yes or give a nod. "From then on I slowly tried to be gentle. When there arose an urge to swear, anger or yell, I remembered the words of The next morning the kids and I were ready for church. Franki's my son which grew louder, not only in my ears but more so in eyes swept across the corner of the room, but he did not find my heart. From then on, my children and my husband say that 'Mama rarely gets angry and no longer shouts now’.

“Franki really started to change my and my family’s life. He never fails to do what his teacher tells him to do; he immediately does it at home. Not only about cleanliness and neatness, but also about praying before and after a meal. As well as praying before going to bed which we have rarely done in so long. But now we do it almost every day. It's all because of Franki," Ibu Yohana said.

"Another great miracle for me in early 2017 was how Franki’s positive behavior changed the life of his father, my husband, Francis Naiheli. It was during the 2016 New Year's Eve party to greet 2017. Just like every New Years Eve, Judit, Franki and I went to a mass. As I felt as thought I was struck by lightning, his father was apparently standing in the doorway, neatly dressed in with shirt, suit and trousers.

‘Where is he going?’, I asked myself. Suddenly he bowed, knelt down and pulled Franki into his arms, then lifted him up high, lowered and hugged him even tighter and whispered in his son's ears.

‘Father wants to go to church with Franki, mama and Yudit’, he said.

I was stunned as I watched them.

Thank you God, thank you Bunda Peduli pre-school. Thank Ibu Oa and Ibu Yohana with other mothers from you Pak Mario, Bu Oa, Bu Tuta and Bu Irma. Thank you Wadah.” Kupang, NTT

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Weaving and Sewing the Future

By Karina de Vega

KM Wadah Warabal or Wadah Community Activity Center in Warabal is one of the more prominent communities of the Wadah Foundation. To date, they Phave received various accolades and recognitions, which includes being one of the country’s best Community Reading Centers. This could be attributed to its founder and initiator, Ibu Kiswanti or Bude Kis (a term of endearment accorded to her by everyone who knows her), who is widely known for her dedication. She started her social activities by lending books to the community while selling traditional herbal medicines known as Jamu while riding her bicycle.

Today, activities at the Center continue to grow and has become a full-blown PKM Wadah Warabal. This Warabal Wadah Community Center not only serves as a community library but also houses other social and educational activities which greatly involve a good number of members of the community. The Center’s activities include pre-school, health care, tutorial programs, and micro-lending, which make the Warabal Wadah Community Center activities brighter and colorful.

One of the latest activities they are currently undertaking is on creative economy, which pertains to sewing and tailoring. The interest started a few years back when some women from the community attended a sewing training session and realized that through sewing they could help augment their families’ earnings. Ibu Kiswanti relayed this information to Wadah Foundation and became a reality in 2016. Wadah facilitated the training of four women from the community in making purses and bags.

After attending the said training and in seeing their potential, Ibu Yuli, who coordinated their training, donated a sewing machine which they can use to improve their sewing skills. Women and mothers from PKM WADAH Warabal learning how to use the sewing machine Thereafter, Astra Insurance and GNF also donated additonal sewing machines. August 2017 | Wadah Chronicles | 29

Demonstrating their skills as proven by the sample products they produced, ARSARI Djojohadikusumo Foundation placed an order of 500 pcs of bags for the souvenir books to be given away at the commemoration of the 100th birthday of Prof .

Order placements started pouring in which include bags for wedding souvenirs, purses and otehr similar items. Such progress prompted Wadah International Director, Mr. Alfredo Torno III, to donate additional sewing machines to better equip and allow them to accept more orders.

However, they have difficulties in providing materials in order to fulfill new work orders. Every material has to be provided by the client because of the proximity of the community from the city and stores. Otherwise, the price of the goods will be high to cover transporation and production costs. Thus, up until now PKM Wadah Warabal can only accept limited orders. Such is the issue which should be addressed in order to grow the business.

With this development, the number of women who actively participate continues to grow. From the initial four women who took part in this activity, the number has now grown to 15. There are those who do the cloth selection, cutting, ironing and packaging to make the goods look more attractive.

Apparently this creative economy program is able to provide various hues in the eyes of the community where PKM Wadah Warabal operates. It does not only empower the women who used to be plain housewives but today they are able to provide additional income to their respective families.

Wadah Foundation will continue to assist them in all their activities and will strive to continue to facilitate other training programs that will help women to carry on with their businesses professionally. It would not surprise us if this small scale business could become a huge successful business, considering the enthusiasm that these women have shown in running the business. It is hoped that this creative economy will be able to produce success stories which will inspire more people as well as communities.
