NOTICE . The Editor will be on vacation the last week of July and into early August. The August MOGAZINE will be my first priority upon returning so get those articles in by the deadline. Typed, dot matrix or a laser original sent by mail is preferable to a fax anytime, as I have a scanner to input the material. Faxes lack the quality necessary for successful Optical Character Recognition. If your submission is less than half a page, a fax is OK in a pinch; I will re-type the copy into the newsletter computer format (Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows).

As I finished last month's page 3 article I was simply waiting for a slave cylinder and expected to be finished in short order. The slave cylinder arrived, was replaced and things were great for a day of Sunday cruising with my six year old - Sean. On Monday I drove it down to Redmond and stopped at a stop sign and heard a "wham-barn-crash-boom" and things stopped dead. I opened the bonnet to investigate and saw a hole in the bell housing with a socket partially lodged there - oh what a stupid thing to do.

I remember thinking as I tightened the four 5/8 inch bolts holding the transmission that were bolted from inside the bell housing - better get these nice and tight - one of these coming loose would make a big mess. Looks like I pulled the ratchet and extension off and left the socket stuck to one of the four bolts - a mechanics worst nightmare come true. So the engine had to come out again. The only good thing about doing this often is it gets easier and quicker - you don't even have to think about the right size wrenches - you just automatically grab it.

So beginning on a Wednesday evening out it came and after a few evenings and a Saturday morning it was running again. One of these days I'll be as quick as Bob Hauge. Alas you would think I'd be ready to cruise - but Ic and behold the paint began lifting off the front fenders where the curve flattens out and goes into the bonnet. This was true on te left front fender and also around the headlamp on the other. This meant that they had to be repainted - which meant the front had to come off the car again.

So as I type this page 3 artiple I am waiting for the fenders to be repainted. The manufacturers rep thinks the painter put the paint on too thick? So now I wait? Hopefully I will make it to something this summer - at least I still have a sense of humor. July should bring lots of great Morgan outings beginning with S.I.R. and P.I.R. and the Arlington Fly-In and finishing up with the Bellevue All Brit and The Wellington party after - I think I can push my car that far? As of now I still have not come up with a suitable site for a picnic on August 13th - if any one has any suggestions, please call.

Till next month - keep on MdGGIN. Mike Amos

Magazine Monthly Quiz, from Oil .Stegen...

What new release movie diplays a Morgan DHC in front of the Manor House? The DHC is a look-alike to Hal Medens -- BRG with black wings, top down, and a sheepskin bonnet strap.

1st hint It's an animal movie 2nd hint N9, it's not the Lion King 3rd hint If 'ou weren't paying attention, you missed it! Northern Nonene, from Mike rowley.

PHASE 1 - HIGH SEASON! Bits and bits - more or less in order of importance???

Stump the MAN WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING? - ha! I even know who calls me before they call - just ask Ric MacDonald - who sheepishly called to "brown-out on the Vancouver Island All Brits Picnic fun - good to see Wellingtons up for this great day in Victoria and revisit with the Thomsons and Gilberts (did you hear that Woody needs remedial help in battery cable installation?) It was great to be there and meet a lot of NEW Island Morgan owners - some in the Club I have not had the chance to meet before. We also hatched the first thoughts about an ISLAND SPRING TOUR FOR JUNE 1995 starting with this event; arriving Sat. June 17th and eating and driving through until Wed. June 21st; so keep it open - oh! The day was beautiful and member Jim Walters is to be thanked for that (has the award winner Daimler & a Morgan stashed away some where). This was their 10th annual by the way - so it is actually one year older than the Vancouver event so many enjoy attending. At the close we were all invited back to Woody & Carmels' lake-side " Walden Pond' retreat; where in the AM and very H. THOREAU-LIKE David Wellington a trout BUT, we could only stay for a short time - (gad I hate to leave that place!)

VISIT from Jonathan Russell to the Potentate's Palace Friday June 17th. Very sneaky but Jonathan blows in from the cold - gets a warm Guinness and a hot meal and abuse about the Kelowna event VS the Scottish event; OK on the OTHER Kelowna event however. BUT - little did I know his intent was otherwise (ah! palace intrigue at it's finest). Sunday being fathers day, it seems the QUEEN and the of the North had commissioned KNIGHT Russell to procure a fine bit of regalia for the POT on his day - up to #13 now, Wellington! (who actually was. until this time, 2 car badges up on the POT)

LARRY SHARP may have four seats yet - getting an opportunity to fight it out with TED LATURNUS for a right-hand unit that is available in our town ... ah... these family men - so dedicated to the cause! SPEAKING OF RAIN - cheers to the brave Morganeers Ron Theroux and Al Morgan who carted REAL Princess' around in the deluge at the New Westminster May Day parade - and to think I declined 'cause I thought it was the Street Thing -thing - lucky on both counts I guess. Well is it McCabe's Folly or McCaig's Tower - say what!!! says TRAVELING BERT both in writing and upon his return from the mother land - seems his name is spelled wrong on the post card.

YE EDITOR FAILS TO CONSULT THE MAN WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING

Imagine my shock when reading our esteemed EDITOR'S questions about the world of MORGANS & finding he has not the sense to ask the MAN WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING;... Well EDITOR CRAIG here are your answers:

First, the louver question - easy ... you take the width of your Morgan in inches, look up the LOUVER FACTOR NUMBER in your owners manual (if you still have the original one!) on page 3 FACTOR #2 - divide this into the width of the MOG in inches like so: inches 56" divided by '2' and voile! 28 louvers; on top (NOTE the side louvers are not included) and without all the messy neuristics of looking, trick is having the LOUVER FACTOR NO. in the owners manual.

Second, Wiper arms parked left or right on the MOG again - refer to the owners manual and again Craig, you will find an obscure section (page 12) detailing what takes place in SHED 'D" in Malvern Link - here the new units are parked.on ether the north side or the south side BUT this is NOT the critical factor in question, what is, is when the foreman stands at the west end of shed "D" - looks eastward to the HILLS OF MALVERN - he then blesses those Morgans on his right with right handed parking wipers and those on his left with left parking wipers - so you see it has NOTHING WHAT-so-EVER to do with which side the steering is on. (Same for the spokes bent right or left by the way)

Finally, the matter of location of the HEADLIGHT PODS on the wings - the MAN WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING, being in charge of a POD HIMSELFSAME does not even need to check the owners manual on this one BUT for the benefit of other readers/members and YE EDITOR - in the Manual page 41 holds the answer here. There, I hope this will keep the MEN IN WHITE COATS away from our EDITOR and at the same time preserve my columnists job here at the MOGAZINE. And some of you doubters wonder how the MAN WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING does it ... well ... he does his HOME WORK - that's what!

'+ Northern Nonene, (con tinuea' from Mike) .

Last event of some note here in the North the SCOTTISH GAMES on Sat. June 25th; the weather delightful and a small but loyal turnout including Mac Sharp and whole family, Mac Morgan. and Mac Emrick - ah the caber tossing; the haggis hurling and the lager lapping - what a day.

FINAL FLASH

New family member for Ron and Yvonne Theroux - a JAGUAR XJS - 1989 1 God knows what stage in their growing up this acquisition represents BUT it sounds like a VERY good buy.

FOR THE FUTURE

By the next eagerly awaited column your POT should have great words on the epic tour of the MOUSQUETAIRE'S and their capers in the PACIFIC NORTH WEST - especially the TACOMA and BELLEVUE ALL BRITS period JULY 21st to 24th. DAVID WELLINGTON has graciously agreed to help with the coordination in the area once he knows what he has to coordinate - a lot of things can happen between France - Siberia and TACOMA you know! David has not read the book yet and so he had better get busy, as should the rest of you and pick a name out of the story for yourself ... and KNOW what the story is about too.

Thus far we have: Jonathan Russell as BAZIN Pam Baker as MME. BONACIEUX Al Morgan as M. de TREVILLE the POT as MOSQUETON

Again if you don't know who these characters are you gotta read the book and getting Walt Disney's current THE THREE MUSKETEERS will NOT help you too much!

Hope to see all at our next two great events the S.I.R. historics on Saturday July 2nd and the ARLINGTON FLY-IN Saturday July 9th and then to the BIG ONE with the MOUSQUETAIRES in Bellevue July 23/24.

The 'OFFICIALLY CROWNED" Potentate of the North...

5outhern chatter, from Heinz ,Stromcuis t ....

Finally!!! Sunshine, a good turnout (Buffums. Hauges. McClintons. Mileses x 4. Stromquists and Dwight), plus 4 Morgans all coordinated for an open air meeting at the Cornelius Pass Roadhouse.

Highlight of the evening and center of attention was a photo album of the club's early years. Bob Hauge brought it along to have Ken help him identify cars, events and people that the grey matter could no longer put a name to. Old-timers in attendance waxed romantically as memories began drifting back and thoughts turned to those who have not been seen at social meetings for a long time. As a relative newcomer, I was surprised to learn that the club was started by a group of long-haired teenagers who for the most part tended toward the slim!

Because everyone in attendance (plus Barofskys and Nelsons) also participated in the June 11 coast tour, we again discussed our theories about the mystery road than tuns from Beaver to Carlton. We had directions and maps but the fork and paved road that should have taken us around construction never appeared. Instead we got miles of gravel roads, lots of beautiful scenery and a look at Carlton which was not on our itinerary. We made quite an impression on the locals, standing on the side of the road laughing and wondering how we got there. A telephone poll this afternoon revealed that Dwight Smith, as organizer of the tour, now leads in points for the 1994 Mike Powley off-road award.

The June 11 beach run was great fun, so let's do it again. How about a one day tour on July 30, starting in Salem but this time going east rather than west? Right now, I've got three couples who can make that date so please mark your calendar and give me a call. Details to be worked out later.

?J'Th Midl,ando Nat,ter, frot-j-i o/7 Nelson .

We met at the Lucky 7 at Totem Lake. Had a good turn out of 22 + guest. Also we had 8 Morgans, this is a record for some time. Dave & Thea drove in with their Morgan, as did Hal & Joan, Terry & Martha, Bill Button, Bill Beavers. Dices, Ron Weiskind and me in our 4place, (Loretta had to work late and I was through early). Also present were Joe & Olga, Tinneas, Glenn, Kay, Mike, Gary Van Hook and Gil, and Craig. I hope I didn't miss any cars; they were quite spread out.

Conversation was pretty deep into sail boat racing. Then to Morgans. Terry & Martha visited the factory last month. Martha related the visit to a psychic experience (sorry Martha I forgot your wordings). Terry & Martha also had neat pictures from the factory. Kay & Glenn's 4/4 is coming right along. I'm sure the gals are happy about that. Theresa & Louise are making noises like the guys are too old to race. Ron says they are trying to recapture their youth: they should have gotten it out of their system when they were younger. Ron can remember back when race cars were better then girls, apparently somewhere along the line Ron changed his mind about girls!!

Welllngtons were met there by their daughter & friend. Mike did 2 drawings, Nancy Dice won a poster and I won a Mog 23 placque. Mike's Morgan is almost back on the road again, again, again. I received new steering parts from the factory, a tie rod drag link incl. ends, etc. Craig, just buy a pair of straight wiper arms and bend them to fit. Be happy they go back & forth when needed. Be happy the engine starts and the Morgan moves in the right direction when clutch is engaged and all 4 wheels stop when brake is applied, anything else is pure luxury, fortunately the little men in white coats have a special consideration for Morgan owners, (I met them years ago).

Take notice of our July meeting, potluck at Bill & Jerry Button's. Map & time else where in Mogazine

See ya all next month.

1994 Western Washington All British Field Meet Saturday, July 23, 1994

The Western Washington All British Field meet is fast approaching. It will be held on Saturday, July 23, at Bellevue Community College. The festivities begin on Friday evening, July 22nd with a cocktail party at the Bellevue Inn, located at 11211 Main Street in Bellevue (Main St. and 1-405). Registration materials can be picked up at this time to avoid the hassle on Saturday morning. There will also be a photo contest, (bring your favorite unframed British car photo,) and a raffle to benefit the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

The Field Meet will be held all day on Saturday, July 23rd, with the awards presentations taking place at 3:00pm. As you probably know by now, the Field Meet poster features a Morgan, and a limited number of these will. .be kept flat and in good condition suitable for mounting or framing and will be available for $5.00. On Sunday, July 24th, pack a lunch and participate in a leisurely tour through the countryside and foothills of the Cascades beginning at 10:00am from the Holiday Inn in Issaquah.

The Wellington's have again graciously volunteered to host a post-event potluck gathering at their home on Lake Washington starting late Saturday afternoon. (Details in the Calendar and elsewhere.)

CORRECTION: Last month's Mogazine incorrectly stated the 4/4 class winners at the Van Dusen All Brit. The list should read Russell, Kaufman and MacDonald - a clean sweep by our Northern Pod!!

I Minutes of the Business Meeting Second Quarter 1994

The 2nd Quarter Business Meeting was held Saturday, June 4, 1994 at the Cammarano's Business Park. President Mike Amos called the meeting to order with the invocation to "get this meeting rolling" Attendee's included Mike Amos. Bob and Janis Hauge, Craig Runions, Gary and Pamela Bell, Gil Stegen, Dick and Nancy Dice, and David Cammarano

Treasurer's Report - The Hauge's presented the report for Bitsy Miles. The Club remains financially sound. We presently have 95 paid members, slightly behind last year at this time. (Secretary's note - while a good showing, this is below our desired number of 125. Please remind your fellow rough riders to pay their dues and participate in a great year of events.) Regalia sales are lower than last year due to a ban on sales at the VanDusen meet. However, strong sales are anticipated at the Bellevue All Brit. To date no advertising has been billed or paid.

Secretary's Report - Gil Stegen suggested that the present responsibilities of the Secretary were very limited. A number of suggestions were made of additional duties. Most importantly, it was noticed that we don't have copies of the By-Laws handy, and hence we really cannot say that the Secretary is under employed. Bob Hauge agreed to investigate the procedures necessary to ensure that copies of the By-laws are handily available.

Editor's Report - The Editor discussed the Mogazine production and blushed when complimented on the outstanding job he is doing. The pagination is particularly noteworthy having taken 3 or 4 days to develop (sort of like working on a Morgan, it never ends) (Ed. note - that was a joke, Gil. It took 3 or 4 hours, not days)

Regalia Report - Gary reported that there is an adequate stock for Bellevue, but that he will assess the need to restock for Portland. It was suggested that Polo shirts with collars and buttons would be a nice step up from the traditional T-shirt. Dave Cammarano offered to investigate the availability and costs. It was moved and seconded that Gary Bell be authorized to spend $500 for Polo shirts with Morgan Logos. It was agreed that future orders for shirts and sweat shirts would be for Large and Extra-Large sizes. Patches were discussed, with Gil offering to get a sample for the club to preview (drive before buy?). Marketing of regalia was again discussed, with the emphasis on displaying the merchandise at shows and field meets. It was moved and seconded that the Secretary be authorized to spend up to $50 for a transportable display rack for regalia. It was further decreed by verbal acclamation that 1995 will be the 20th anniversary year for Morgan Owners Group Northwest. A commemorative badge is planned along with the other usual festivities.

New Business - The information super-highway is getting closer. In response the Roster will now include space for facsimile numbers. What next, Internet? The meeting adjourned to The Office for fuel and lubricants.

Gilbert R. Stegen Secretary 6/15/94

Directions to Lee Harman's on Camano Island for lunch before Arlington Fly-in: get off 1-5 at the Stanwood/Camano Island exit, go west 7 miles thru Stanwood onto Camano Island. turn right at obvious "Y" onto N. Camano Drive, pass 2 Mom and Pop grocery stores, then road turns 90 degrees left and becomes W. Camano Drive, one block later turn right onto Sunset Drive N., .7 miles later is their home at 635 Sunset Drive N. (387-1501 for R.S.V.P. or help). Plan to arrive before noon. Notes from the Out/andy, from Eric Olover. Dear Craig,

First, I want to express my appreciation for the job you are doing with the "Mogazine" and for the faithfulness of the area representatives for getting their reports to you. We in the outlands of the club look forward to the of our "Mogazine" each month. Sometimes we are a little confused by "in" references (e.g., cheese-heads) and the Canadian vernacular, but we expect that someone will sort it out for us one day.

Second, we in the outlands have noticed the club growth and the new divisions of the Northern pod and Midlands and Southern groups. While we are not sure what a Pod is -- it sounds like something from a 1950's B movie -- we assume that it is something like a group. (Ed. note - to the rest of us, they are "officially" the Northern Centre: what they report - Nonsense? - and what they call themselves • Pod? - is something else.) Of course, having once met the Northern Potentate, I have a hunch that the Northern Pod operates differently than the other groups. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Those of us who are not fortunate enough to live close to one of the three groups still manage to live lives that include our beloved Morgans. I was thinking that it would be nice to hear from some of the outlanders once in awhile and learn about their Morgan-related activities. Sharing those experiences would, I believe: enhance the "Mogazine" and help tie our wide-spread club together. The "Mogazine" could print the report under the title Notes from the Outlands or another suitable heading. Just a thought. (Ed. note - all right, you Outlanders, the Editor now recognizes you as a group, Mogazine space is dedicated to your voice and the challenge has been put forth by one of your own. I expect to see material from the Outlands Centre next month, outlandish outback outtakes or whatever!)

Third, the Spudmoggers from Boise who gather for breakfast each Saturday morning are 'gearing up" for the Banff-Jasper Rally. We have three committed Spudmoggers, who should be released from their respective institutions before September, signed up and ready to go. A telephone call to Midlander Bob Nelson resulted in a tentative decision for the Spudmoggers to meet the Midlands contingent in Yahk, B.C. on September 15. If others are interested in joining this group to motor into Canmore, please call me or Bob Nelson (I hope that offer is OK with you. Bob).

Fourth, other Spudmog news. Bob Adair retired. He seems very happy and is available for morning coffee any day. Lynn Hawkins just had the floor to his new garage poured. Once done, we hope to hear stories about work on his twin-cam MGA. Pete Rolf, Morgan owner but not club member, just announced that he is retiring. Bob Adair is making morning coffee meeting inquiries of Pete.

Last, discussions about a Spudmog tour to Mountain Home began. If held, most MOG Northwest members are invited. Some disparaging remarks about Mountain Home have, unfortunately, made it necessary to prohibit participation by a couple of Midland and Northern Pod members (Potentate or no). The tour highlight will consist of a visit to the Potato, does that have an "e", Museum.

More Out land Notes, from Ooh, Adair....

Dear Craig,

I recently took a trip to Salem to visit McClintons and to rendezvous with other Mog owners while a filming session was being conducted with Ken and Mark McClinton. We visited Mini Motors in Salem where more filming took place. I then went to Ellensburg, WA to visit with the Miltners. Put 1200 miles on the old drophead. It didn't miss a lick - as usual - and was a great way to start my retirement.

I retired the end of April after nearly 30 years with the Dept. of Interior as a wildlife biologist. Based on 2 months of this retirement life, I can say I really don't miss the office! Now to finish my 1952 +4! Other Marrero, from f3oh, IVe1on.

Sept 14th, Wednesday, we will depart for the Reddington Tour. This is 1 day earlier than planned. We will arrive Thursday PM at Georgetown Inn. Here we will stay 2 nights of the Tour. I talked to Eric Glover of Idaho and they will have 3 cars or more on the road from Idaho. We will meet up with them on Thursday AM in Alberta and finish our run with them. Call me for information; it's a long run and it's a fun, fun run.

Get prepared, it's easy to get complacent driving our newer real cars. Here are some things to check on your Morgan. Your front end has 6 grease fittings, all Morgans. There is a grease fitting on your clutch & brake pedals, all Mogs. Grease fittings on your wheel bearings, all Mogs, (+ 8 I'm not sure). Some universal joints need greasing, check them. + 4's have a fitting on the clutch bearing assembly. This one is under the upholstery on your trans tunnel, it makes a world of difference in the pressure it takes to push your clutch in (don't over grease it). Front wheel bearings should be packed once a year or at least before a long drive, all Mogs. Steering gear box, check for lube 90W. Is the brake fluid level? Is it up? If not, why.

Check radiator, is there any seepage, could be a warning. (talk to me if you're going to redo it). Check your hoses, are there cracks or swelling, soft spots, replace them. (If you haven't replaced them in 5 years, replace them now). Tune up points, wires etc. goes without saying- Lights, do they all work. Dennis found some H.P. replacement bulbs for our tail & stop lights, big difference, works great. call (402)474-4411, bulb# 911-1157 HP, $3.00 each, $12.00 mm. order. Well worth it. We change motor oil, but have you changed your trans or diff oil? You should, its cheap compared to a bearing or gear.

Notes From a Morgan Garage is a great book, $50.00, but worth it. even if you just let your mechanic read it. Order from Fred Sisson (404) 446-7124.

Hope this list doesn't scare you off, it's not that much, and a real benefit to your Morgan & you. As always, I or Dennis will help or give directions if we can. Call me on (206) 387-3241.

18th Annual Portland All British Field Meet Labor Day Weekend (9/2..3A) 1994

By the time you read this, the Portland All British Field Meet will be less than two months away. So mark your calendar and plan to attend the festivities. For those not on the field meet mailing list, registration forms are included elsewhere in the Mogazine. Pre-registration deadline is August 14.

If you're coming from out of town, we have rooms blocked-out at the Best Western Inn at the Meadows for September 2 and 3 at a special rate of $55/night single and $60/night double. To guarantee that rate, register at the Meadows (800-448-5544) before August 26 and tell them you are with the Morgan Club.

Details on the Saturday breakfast, MOG Northwest party and directions will appear in the August Mogazine. Questions, comments, suggestions, call Heinz on (206) 573-6582.

FOR SALE Collection of 102 back issues (1982-1993) of the MOG NW newsletter. All in very good condition and sorted by year. If interested, call me with your offer. Hal Meden, (206) 641-0673. Vancouver/Whi,tIerAII5ritih gun, from .ic McPoI.

With the passing of another All-Brit Field Meet at Van Dusen Gardens, and a record number of Morgans, it is time to start planning for the Vancouver/Whistler Run on Sept. 24, 1994, this being a sort of traveling Field Meet. Organized by some of the people who do such a great job of Van Dusen, the theme is Yes It Looks Pretty, But Does It Run!. Last year some 135 cars, including 6 Morgans proved they do indeed run.

Starting at Park Royal Shopping Centre in North Vancouver, very near the hotel for the Xmas party, the drive goes past Horseshoe Bay, along Howe Sound and through Squamish, then up through the mountains to the base of Blackcomb Mountain, Whistler. If the Van Dusen Garden site is arguably the most beautiful for a Field Meet, then the drive along Howe Sound must arguably be (one of) the most beautiful in the North West. A twisty road hugging the south shore provides driving fun and a fabulous view of water, islands and the glaciers of the mountains on the north shore. Weather in late Sept. is usually good, cool enough to keep the engine temps down in the climbs, but the sun is warm enough to shed the heavy jackets later in the morning. From Squamish. as the road climbs the trees in the higher elevations are in their colors.

In Whistler the cars are parked on the bricks, at the bottom of the ski lift. Restaurants are here for lunch, though last year it seemed they didn't believe 135 cars would complete the trip as they were terribly understaffed. We spent the afternoon trying to get food: though the beer was plentiful. We had a FUN drive, convoying and seeing/passing/being passed by groups of Lotii?, Austin Healey's, M.G.'s, Jag's etc.

Saturday evening a salmon Bar-B-Que was hosted at MacDonald's. The fish caught and donated by Jonathan was perfectly cooked by Lady Glenda. A culinary success as there was none left for the host when it was my turn! Ditto for Lady G's dessert. A pleasant evening outside on the patio, with views of both Blackcomb and Whistler mountains, almost up/down to Powley's pot latch.

Sunday we made a breakfast run further north to Pemberton, escorting the Bailey's, as. they were continuing on to Kelowna. Thought is being given this year to do this, then continuing on to Lilooet, then down the Fraser Canyon to Vancouver, as this will provide an alternate route back, and we can leave our American guests at an appropriate border crossing. However, with the 17K/9M of gravel through the Mt. Currie Indian Reserve, and that I do not wish to display Monster MOG that Powley possesses, this is under consideration. Input is welcome

So this was last year. Entries/accommodation information will follow in August. We will again provide the salmon Bar-B-Que, please R.S.V.P. so we can plan, as I want some this year! For those who come we think you will enjoy this drive as much as we will presenting it to you.

HELP WANTED!!!!

Back at Nelson's Spring Tourally during parking lot chit-chat someone explained to me the trick in removing the Float-On-Air Cushion from it's leather case. However, as my FOAC's held air, I let this sage advice in one ear and out the other eye. Now that the drivers cushion no longer holds air, I no longer float!! If this wise and knowledgeable person would have the patience to explain this procedure once more I promise my complete attention. THANKS Ric MacDonald 8275 Alpine Way Whistler. B.C. The British Car Club folks in that thriving tourist Mecca, the city of Kelowna, BC on Lake Okanogan, put on quite a bash over the June 24th weekend. Five Morgans and their families took part in the car show and one more visited the site before the day was over. Here's the story:

Dices set off from Bellevue in Big Red on the Thursday afternoon, top up, and lucky for us too because at Bellingham it began to sprinkle and by Vancouver it was POURING. We were headed for Ric MacDonald's place in Whistler, and we made it nearly on time, thanks to a great map. Ric and Glenda fixed dinner and showed us Morgan videos. Next day we set off, Red and Mar000n, over a lovely road on a socked-in day. Red had figured that he'd never have to do the Mt. Currie/Duffy Lake road again in his life (the first time was on a Powley tour), but here it came. This time only muddy, not dusty, but Red got a snoot-full. Rock falls along the way meant that Red was glad Mar0000n was leading; and the boulder Ric hit wasn't so very large. Only about 8" diameter and probably did no permanent damage. Glenda drove the last half of the run to Kelowna and that was beautiful because she likes to go fast too. No speedometer!

Suddenly (after only one wrong turn from Ric the Navigator) there we were at Graham and Val Bailey's house in Kelowna. Beer!! Pool!! Hot tub!! Steaks on the grill! And who should appear but Jonathan Russell and Dale Almost-Russell in the Blue Beastie. We ate the steaks and then went to the official cocktail martyr where we spotted Frank and Debbie Kaufman's car, but were too late (they said) to get our car show packets, and they wouldn't allow Graham to park riis lovely Land with the other cars. Snobs! So Russells and Dices left to check out the sledding site. Meanwhile, Graham Bailey, instituting the Bailey Rules, threw one of his patented fits and got them to let go of our packets. Back at Bailey's we caroused a while, and tubbed, and Dick gave a cee-gar smoking lesson. Jonathan and Dick were in a nicotine haze while the rest of us merely drank too much.

Next day: Saturday: the Car Show. About 120 cars (good for a first effort) including 5 Morgans (Dice. MacDonald, Russell plus Bailey's Black Beauty and Kaufman's Candy Striper) lined up around the Dolphins Fountain at a new condo/marina/restaurants and shops place on Lake 0. The organizers had cardboard drip-sheets to put under each car (a great idea -- let's try it for Van Dusen next time) so we wouldn't stain the fancy paving. The day was warm and sunny with a nice breeze and fountain spray to keep us cool. Some nice cars: a 1935 Rover sedan, an AC Bristol approx. 1948 fixed head, a nicely restored XK 150 Jaguar roadster, and a whole bunch of bi- and motorcycles, including a nice Douglas. Plus more Triumphs than you could take. Dr. Bob Walker, who used to be a member of MOG-NW, showed up in his red racing Morgan. He wants to rejoin.

Show over: with Bailey rules in effect, the Morgans did their own thing as usual and went off on a little tour to the Knox Mt. hill climb to see the fabulous view. Then home again for refreshments and a swim, starring J. Russell in his Speed-o suit. More cigars. Then off to the banquet. As we left the Prince of Darkness caused the power to go off in the Bailey's part of town, a portent of things to come. Huge buffet banquet, free wine, many LONG presentations. For the Morgans, Kaufmans took first, Russells second, and Baileys third. Graham also took 2nd in the MG T-series with his BRG TO. But the big prize was won by Dices. Not only did Dick win a door prize (chocolates!) but we won the "Early Bird" drawing: 2 free nights in Kelowna at the host Lodge! Great prize for people who will be going to Kelowna again in August! Dick ran to make the reservations before they decided we hadn't won after all. A downpour outside. Russells had no top and no side curtains with them. The Beastie is now properly christened. Home to Baileys via van, to find no power still, a very dark house, and candles to light us to bed. Bocci Valley Lightning ('continuedfroni Nancy) .... .

Sunday: more Bailey rules and Morgans off on their own run. A lovely drive north on the east side of Lake 0., two golf courses visited plus the Gray Monk winery, then another run down the west side to Graham's father and stepmothers house (mansion) on the lake. Wine, bocci ball (you can also spell it Boyce or boccie sez my dictionary) on the lawns, luncheon on the veranda. All of a sudden it's 5 p.m. and time for the Dices to head for home: 6 hours over the Coquihalla to Bellingham and Bellevue.

A wonderful weekend. Many thanks to Val and Graham who put us up and led us and fed us (and to Patrick and Andrew who loaned us their beds! and to Cameron who kept us entertained); to Ric and Glenda who did likewise; to Frank and Debbie who had much to do with running the event; to Jonathan and Dale who gave us wine and kept everybody laughing; and to Art and Ingrid Bailey who fed the ravenous mob and showed us their fabulous house. But NOT to Dale and Debbie, who beat Jonathan and me at bocci ball. We will have revenge!!

We had a great time! Hope to see more Morgans next year.

Craig: Could you put a little note in someplace, thanking all the folks who sent cards and happy thoughts for me in a recent medical situation? Tell them everything is OK now, the last operation found everything negative. Relief!! Thanks. Nancy.

Saturday, July 2 saw a few MOGNW members out at S.I.R. for some great vintage racing. Parked in the Car Club Corral were the steeds of Dice, Powley, MacDonald, McCabe, Wellington, Runions, and 3-wheel Pollock. Mike Amos showed up sans Moggie. We toured the tract for 3 laps during the noon break between practice/qualifying and the actual races. In addition, Morrison and Chris Lucurell were competing in their Morgans, along with Cammarano in his 750cc Scepter chain drive full bodied sports racer, Bob Lucurell in a 1948 Cad Allard and Drew Lucurell in a 1964 Shelby GT350. There was occasional rain just before some of the races which made for some interesting first few laps. Accelerating through the right hand turn 9 and onto the main straight caught some by surprise. Clockwise spinouts put some pretty nice rolling stock sliding into the concrete wall along pit road.

Other attractions were the Lola, March and McLaren Can-Ams, a blindingly fast 1954 Maserati 250F grand prix car formerly driven by Sterling Moss which won the pole for its group but started last on the grid not because of some problem but because I think he was interested in the thrill of the chase, which he did in convincing fashion passing everyone and winning!, Bruce McCaw's 1956 Mercedes 300SL Gullwing and 3 Ferrari Testa Rossas including Pete Lovely's 1959 V-12, one of two surviving in the world today and driven by Pete in 1960. In its restored condition it has won at Pebble Beach and the Ferrari National Concours. A July 1 article in The Seattle Times states this cars market value as between $3.5 and $5 million! Lovely's partner, Butch Dennison, talks about actually racing such a valuable car today faced with the risk of damage and breakage, in essence saying that that is what the car was meant to do, so do it. If something breaks, fix it. If it costs $150,000 to repair it, do it because that's such a small portion of its overall value! O0000000kay.

You Southern Centre types will have the opportunity to see most of these machines July 9/10 at the Norm Thompson Historics at P.I.R. To many of us over-50 types, this is a real trip. Great fun.

Late news: Dave Erbeck advises me of the Lake Stevens Aqua Fest Parade at 1:00PM Sat. July 30. Morgans are invited to participate; the town of Lake Stevens is northeast of Everett, WA approx. 10 miles toward Granite Falls. Call Dave on (206) 659-1090 if you're interested.

", I Ls;- MORGAN: Lurching Forward Taking Reluctant Steps Into Modern Times by Jacques Neher International Herald Tribune Paris, France, Thursday, May 26, 1994

MALVERN LINK, England--With its foot planted firmly on the brake. Morgan Motor Co., one of the last remaining British-owned car makers, is lurching into modern times. Three years ago, Morgan installed its first data processing system--actually just a personal computer to keep track of accounts. And to slim down the order book, under which customers currently wait more than five years for delivery of their classic-styled sports cars, Morgan is tinkering with the layout of its factory, built in 1909. These innovations, to be speeded into place by the end of the century, will increase production by one car a day

Under the bonnet, a bit of technology is being introduced, ever so slowly. Last year, power brakes were offered as standard equipment, and the company now is trying to figure out how to modify the models, one of which was designed in 1936, to accommodate air bags, in particular to meet U.S. regulations. It's even toying with the idea of expanding its product range beyond its three-model lineup--the Four Four, the Plus Four and the Plus Eight--with a new pricey utilizing a mixture of carbon fiber and its basic chassis building material, ash wood.

Not that the company's chairman. Peter Morgan. and his son. Charles, have any intention of inviting in robots or instituting quality circles and automated just-in-time inventory control--concepts adopted by the world's auto industry as it has pushed to cut costs and boost productivity. Indeed, 84 years after Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan began turning out the nine-horsepower three-wheeled "Runabout," Morgan's red-brick factory on a hillside in this residential community near Worcester still turns out cars built the old-fashioned way--by hand.

"Sure, we could change our methods to up the production, but then we would be assembling cars rather than manufacturing them," said Peter Morgan. 74, who has run the company since his fathers death in 1959. Dealers say that Morgan's cachet would be destroyed if modern production methods, not to mention power tools, were brought to the shop floor where 130 metal-benders and wood workers toil pretty much as they did nearly a century ago. "The fact that Morgans are hand-built is vital," said David Harrison. sales director for E. H. Douglas. a Morgan dealer since 1929. "People like to think there was someone with a hammer and chisel making their car, rather than a robot."

Auto industry specialists attribute Morgan's survival to the enduring demand for its relatively affordable cars, crude vehicles offering a hard and fast ride that entice buyers seeking the thrill of motoring through yesteryear. The cars are priced between £16,000 and £26,000 ($24,000 and $39,000), and there are more than 30,000 Morgans of various vintages on the road today. By sticking to three replica models, they say, Morgan has avoided the heavy capital investments traditional automakers face for retooling and product development. Further, it has no inventory to finance. Many buyers come to the plant when their car is ready.

"Morgan is the exception to the rule that small is not beautiful in the motor industry," said Garel Rays, professor at Cardiff Business School. Not all agree. In the BBC's 1990 "Trouble Shooter" series, Sir John Harvey-Jones, the British industrialist, predicted Morgan's antiquated methods would doom it. Sir John, currently chairman of The Economist, said Morgan was missing "a golden opportunity" to profit from the high demand--there was a nine-year wait for delivery at the time--and advised the company to double production, improve efficiency and raise prices.

But Mr. Morgan still dismisses much of Sir John's advice, calling him "a bit of a windbag." He says that raising prices would have caused "real trouble" when the recession arrived and demand fell. Dealers say that significantly cutting delivery times would lower the car's resale value. With the new product in such high demand, relative to its supply, the price of a used Morgan is maintained near the

i)

Lurching Morgan (continued)

new car price. Peter Morgan says his central concern is to avoid making the company vulnerable to down-swings in the market. He notes that Morgan, throughout its history, never had to lay off any workers--possibly the only automaker in the world that can make such a claim. Nevertheless, he agrees with the need to reduce the delay between the time the customer puts down £250 for a 'place in line' in Morgan's order book and the time the car is delivered. A wait of one or two years. he said, would be more reasonable.

He has assigned his 42-year-old son the task of streamlining production in order to lift output from the current 480 cars a year to 750 within five years. Abandoning a professional career as a television cameraman 10 years ago, Charles Morgan is in line to take over the company. With a business degree earned over the past three years. he talks of removing production "bottlenecks." setting up 'measured flow lines', surveying the satisfaction levels of owners and identifying habitual laggards among his 400 suppliers. Though he uses a personal computer to maintain customer accounts and stock, he still relies largely on a visual inventory system. Pointing to a stack of body panels against a wall. he says he knows it is time to recorder when the stack has almost disappeared. Meanwhile, Morgan is squirreling away its modest profit in a rainy-day fund. Last year. it had a pretax profit of around £1 million on sales of £8.2 million.
