MAJOR LEAK IN TREATED WATER PIPELINE CROSSING LINE OF CONTACT

Voda Donbasa (VD) informed WASH Cluster that on the morning of 1st August major leaks were identified in the main water pipeline from Horlivka Filter station #2, in the Non-Government Controlled Areas (NGCA) to city, in the Government Controlled Area (GCA). The cause of the leak is unknown. The pipe passes through the settlements Pivdenne, and . Due to huge losses of treated water the management of the water company decided to stop pumps, that which normally send potable water to these civilian communities.

The amount of treated water supplied from Horlivka Filter Station #2 to Toretsk and other settlements is normally 34,000 m3/day. Horlivka Filter station #2 supplies water to more than 45,000 people on GCA (according to Voda Donbasa figures), via the damaged pipe, which crosses the Line of Contact (LoC). These people are currently without their normal water source.

Window of Silence (WoS) was requested immediately on Saturday, August 1, but unfortunately, guarantees were provided only today, 04 August 2020. After demining works, which have been started this morning, VD can assess the leaking pipeline and will inform how much time need VD crews for practical repairs.

WASH Cluster is in touch with Voda Donbasa and will inform about any specific needs after assessment of the area by Voda Donbasa.
