(2007) Henryk Grossman and the Recovery of Marxism By Alan Freeman, London Metropolitan University In 1977, volumes 2 and 3 of Capital and Class, journal of the seven-year old Conference of Socialist Economists, carried Pete Burgess’s translation of Henryk Grossman’s 1941 review article Marx, Classical Political Economy and the Problem of Dynamics. Of this Kuhn (p190) justly remarks ‘It was and remains one of the most impressive critiques of the methodological underpinnings of the body of ideas known as economics in most universities and the media’. The second part of this article offers a devastating dissection of the approach known as ‘general equilibrium’, which now dominates not only orthodox but ‘Marxist’ economics. Had the participants in the next thirty years of debate around Marx’s economic theories treated this article with even normal professional diligence, most of what passes for ‘theory’ in this field would probably never have been written. -

2 Marx’s defence of Jewish emancipation and critique of the Jewish question The Jew … must cease to be a Jew if he will not allow himself to be hindered by his law from fulfilling his duties to the State and his fellow-citizens. (Bruno Bauer, Die Judenfrage)1 The Jews (like the Christians) are fully politically emancipated in various states. Both Jews and Christians are far from being humanly emancipated. Hence there must be a difference between political and human emancipation. (Marx and Engels, The Holy Family)2 Capitalism has not only doomed the social function of the Jews; it has also doomed the Jews themselves. (Abram Leon, ‘Toward a Solution to the Jewish Question’)3 Within the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, the perspectives of Jewish eman- cipation and the Jewish question were synthesised to the extent that emancipation was justified in terms of solving the Jewish question. Within the French Revolu- tion, the inclusive face of universalism that was articulated in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen was synthesised with the terror directed at those labelled ‘enemies of humanity’. In both the Enlightenment and the revolutionary tradition, however, there were alternative ways of thinking about Jewish emancipation that sought to break radically from the prejudicial assump- tions of the Jewish question. In the nineteenth century, the synthesis of Jewish emancipation and the Jewish question was to be torn apart. On the one hand, the Jewish question was set in opposition to Jewish emancipation; on the other hand, Jewish emancipation was justified independently of the Jewish question.4 The tensions contained in the eighteenth-century synthesis could no longer be held in check. -

What kind of emancipation do they want? Civic, political emancipation. Bruno Bauer replies to them: In Germany no one is politically emancipated. We ourselves are not free. How then could we liberate you? You Jews are egoists if you demand for yourselves, as Jews, a special emancipation. You should work, as Germans, for the political emancipation of Germany, and as men, for the emancipation of mankind. You should feel the particular kind of oppression and shame which you suffer, not as an exception to the rule but rather as a confirmation of the rule. Or do the Jews want to be placed on a footing of equality with the Christian subjects? If they recognize the Christian state as legally established they also recognize the regime of general enslave- [27] ment. Why should their particular yoke be irksome when they accept the general yoke? Why should the German be interested in liberation of the Jew, if the Jew is not interested in the liberation of the German? The Christian state recognizes nothing but privileges. The Jew himself, in this state, has the privilege of being a Jew. As a Jew he possesses rights which the Christians do not have. Why does he want rights which he does not have but which the Christians enjoy? In demanding his emancipation from the Christian state he asks the Christian state to abandon its religious prejudice. -

KRITIKE VOLUME NINE NUMBER TWO (DECEMBER 2015) 77-97 Article ‘On the Jewish Question:’ A Polemical Précis Virgilio A. Rivas Abstract: The essay is a polemical engagement with Karl Marx’s early writing “On the Jewish Question” as it traces its arguably Feuerbachian origin and influence. Althusser in his book For Marx allows us to recognize this imprint of Feuerbach in the writings of the young Marx yet also falls short of determining what “On the Jewish Question” conveys in the last instance. As the essay navigates this contested terrain of interpreting Marx’s key writing, the importance of revisiting Feuerbach’s influence on the young Marx is underscored vis-à-vis Bauer’s impoverished Hegelianism in full display in his polemic concerning the emancipation of the Jews. Towards the concluding section, we will connect Marx’s concrete-materialist form of critique with which he treated Bauer’s polemics to contemporary forms of philosophical materialism in relation to the overlapping logics of late capitalism today. Bronisław Dembowski Reception of the Encyclical "Aeterni Patris" in Poland Collectanea Theologica 46/Fasciculus specialis, 187-203 1976 Collectanea Theologica 46 (1976) fasc. specialis BRONISLAW DEMBOWSKI, WARSZAWA RECEPTION OF THE ENCYCLICAL "AETERNI PATRIS” IN POLAND The encyclical Aeterni Patris of Pope Leo XIII promulgated on August 4, 1879, had exercised an enormous influence on the revival of scholastic thinking which began a few decades before and is known as the neoscholastic movement, for short neoschola sticism1. The present study aims to fill the gap in the history of philo sophical thinking in Poland, and to show the bearing of the ency clical in the Polish philosophical centers and the reception it met with. The whole study can be divided into four groups of problems: 1) Christian philosophizing in Poland before the encyclical, 2) the main points of teaching in the encyclical, 3) the evaluation of the encyclical in Poland, 4) the response of the philosophers to the recommendations of the encyclical. 1. Christian Philosophical Thinking in Poland before the Encyclical We can say, in a general way, that the main issue of Christian philosophy in Poland, in the middle of 19th century, was the defence of faith threatened by the rationalistic attitude. Book Reviews 519 independent. In 1923 the Romanian authorities embarked on an extensive programme of Romanianization. The Romanian language became obligatory in primary and secondary education, and German newspapers were heavily censored. That is why this period was chosen for a deeper analysis of the German-Jewish press and the Jewish theatre. The five most important German-Jewish daily newspapers were the Czernowitzer Allgemeine Zeitung (1903–1940), the Czernowitzer Morgenblatt (1918–1940), Das Volk/Neues Cernowitzer Tageblatt (1918–1923), the Ostju¨dische Zeitung (1919–1937), and the Volkspresse/Vorwa¨rts (1899–1937). They represented the different political and cultural tendencies among the Jewish population: conservative, liberal/assimilatory, Jewish nationalist, Zionist, and socialist. The same tendencies were represented in Czernowitz’s German theatre, which was sponsored mainly by Jews. From 1905 onward, when a new theatre was opened, all kinds of German groups played there, with guest performances by Yiddish groups. But from 1921, the German theatre became the victim of Romanian nationalist and anti-Semitic hostility, two years before the official Romanian cultural policy was launched. Romanian students fre- quently disturbed German performances. At the end December 1921 the Romanian author- ities decreed that theatre performances would henceforward be givenonlyinRomanian.The German theatre moved into an old concert hall, but after two seasons it was forced to close. In his detailed study, the author gives an insight into the unique cultural situation of Bukovina and its Jewish population. His attempt to combine a history of the press and the theatre is new, and daring. The list of all daily newspapers and journals in Bukovina from 1882 to 1940 provided at the end of the book is useful; it shows how important the German-speaking Jewish population was for the culture of the whole region. -

Methodische und sachliche Vorbemerkungen Wer sich im Rahmen einer historischen Studie mit Parteien beschäftigt, muss sich zu- nächst einmal mit der Begrifflichkeit auseinandersetzen. Klarheit ist diesbezüglich insbe- sondere deshalb gefordert, weil der Parteibegriff im 19. Jahrhundert erstens starken Verän- derungen unterlag und zweitens in einen normativen Diskurs eingebettet war, dessen Rep- lizierung es zu vermeiden gilt. Zunächst, in der Ära vor der Entstehung der Massenpar- teien, wurde „Partei“ in einem sehr allgemeinen Sinne verwendet, als ein auf irgendwelche Weise institutionalisierter Meinungsträger im politischen Raum. Er setzte damit zwar sehr wohl einen gewissen diskursiven Rahmen voraus, blieb jedoch bei der Beschreibung des in- stitutionellen Trägers unbestimmt. Eine Partei konnte also durchaus zum Beispiel eine Zei- tung sein, wenn sich diese als selbständiger Meinungsträger einbrachte und nicht nur Sprachrohr einer politischen Organisation war. Am weitesten verbreitet war die Kenn- zeichnung einer bestimmten Fraktion im Parlament als Partei, auch wenn diese in keiner Weise außerparlamentarisch institutionalisiert war. Diese Identifizierung von Partei und Fraktion entsprach dem Charakter der Honoratiorenpolitik: Das Parlament war faktisch der alleinige institutionelle Träger politischer Inhalte, und daher konstituierten die dort handelnden Gruppen die Teile (partes) des politischen Diskurses. Erst mit dem Aufkom- men der Massenparteien wandelte sich der Parteibegriff. Er war zwar durchaus noch auf das politische Handeln in den parlamentarischen Körperschaften bezogen. Gleichzeitig kam ihm nun jedoch eine zweite Dimension zu, indem er ein Segment der als Masse ima- ginierten politischen Gesellschaft bezeichnen sollte. Dieser Sachverhalt gilt für westliche Gesellschaften ebenso wie für den Raum, mit dem wir uns hier beschäftigen. -
