Awake, you sleepers, from your sleep! Rouse yourselves, you slumberers, from your slumber! Examine your deeds, and turn to God in repentance… Look closely at yourselves; improve your ways and your deeds. Abandon your evil ways, your unworthy schemes, every one of you! Cantor Jen Roher We hear these urgent, percussive words read each year on the morning of Rosh Hashanah, just before the blowing of the shofar. These words were written by Maimonides in his book Mishneh Torah: he said that even though the sounding of the shofar is a decree of written law, it has a deeper meaning. In other words, we shouldn’t simply accept that we must blow the shofar, but rather, we must make a deeper connection to this action.

According to tradition, however, we don’t wait until the morning of Rosh Hashanah to awake from our metaphorical slumber. We have a whole month to engage in this spiritual awakening, and that month begins with the first day of the month of Elul, which this year corresponds to the first day of September. All through the month of Elul, we are encouraged to look inside our hearts and see what’s there. Many of us think of this as an activity specifically for Yom Kippur, or perhaps for the 10 days leading up to Yom Kippur. But in fact, tradition encourages us to start the practice of introspection a whole lot earlier, to prepare ourselves for the Days of Awe.

The word “s’lichot” means forgiveness, and describes the particular prayers in our High Holy Day services that have to do with asking forgiveness and repenting for the times we have missed the mark. But the word “S’lichot” ALSO refers to a particular day, the Saturday before Rosh Hashanah (or in some cases, a week before, as it is this year) when we gather together to say these prayers and do this work as a community. S’lichot is the unofficial kick-off of the Holy Days, a quiet time to reflect and find inspiration for the spiritual work ahead.

On Saturday, September 21st, at 8:00pm, we will gather to observe S’lichot as a Temple community at Shomer Emunim. Through a quiet service of prayer and song we will begin to turn inward to examine our actions over the past year. We will begin with a nosh (of course), and then the beautiful Havdalah prayers will end Shabbat and begin our season of introspection. Join with me and your Temple family as we explore this first taste of the High Holy Days together in an intimate chapel service. Come experience the magic of S’lichot–and the first sounding of the shofar–as we set the tone for the Days of Awe ahead. 3 POTLUCK DINNER & CULTURAL Interfaith ENTERTAINMENT Main dish will be Reunion Festival provided by The Temple BRING A SIDE DISH TO SERVE Participants: 10 PEOPLE Temple Shomer Emunim Religious Restrictions: United Muslim Association of Toledo No bacon, pork, or shellfish Hindu Temple of Toledo Monroe Street United Methodist Church RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED AND ARE Sunday, September 22, 2019 LIMITED TO THE FIRST 4:30-7:30pm 100 CONGREGANTS!!! 6 Student Rabbi Yair Walton Hello. I am very excited to be working and learning with you this year as your student Rabbi. I thought it best that before I meet all of you in person, I introduce myself shortly. Last year I was the Student Rabbi at United Hebrew Congregation in Joplin, MO and before that, I was the Student Rabbi at the Synagogue of the Hills in Rapid City, South Dakota. In my life before coming to HUC, I worked with Jewish youth in various capacities. I was an assistant High School teacher and worked with March of the Living, leading trips to Poland and Israel. I have worked for various Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform organizations helping people connect to the greater Jewish community. I have been blessed with the opportunity to work and volunteer with Jewish communities all over the world: in Ukraine, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Lithuania, and of course Israel. I am interested in how relationships build Student Rabbi Yair Walton Jewish communities and change how we approach Jewish education. I am very excited to be teaching adult education this year and hope to bring my background in a way that enriches the learning of the community and myself.

I lived in Israel before I attended HUC and supported myself as a tour guide in the Old City as well as selling trinkets to tourists. I am an avid backpacker and fledgling gardener who loves the outdoors. During my free time, you will see me either playing with my much younger brothers or listening to a concert in the park. I am excited to learn from you this year as your Student Rabbi.

Thank You, Yair Walton

They come at the very end of September and the beginning of October. Plenty of time to read some books from our Temple Library. First comes the new best seller from Israel: Muck by Dror Burstein, published in the United States by Tyndale Press, no less. That is because this book is a retelling of the story of the Prophet Jeremiah set in present day Jerusalem. For example, there is a light rail that “slid into the Mount Herzl stop, arriving from Ein Kerem.” The effect makes Jeremiah’s story more detailed and intimate than if the time period were Biblical. It affords the author many opportunities to comment on present day Israel and America. His humor and satire are subtle and on target. So is the humanity of King Zedekiah and Jeremiah himself. Just for fun, I recommend The Last Jihad, a thriller involving both the Israeli and American Intelligence Services, by Joel C. Rosenberg. Suddenly, the President’s motorcade is attacked by one of the airplanes which was supposed to protect him. Buckingham Palace is on fire; the Saudi Royal Palace is nearly destroyed, crashed into by a 747. The President, although injured, is safe at NORAD Headquarters inside a mountain in Colorado. The second Iraq War has begun. This book was written in 2001 and published in 2002. This is the first of eight books about the conflicts in the Middle East. This author works and writes to shore up Christian support for Israel. There will be no meetings of the Temple Book Club in September and October. I hope to see all of you on the second Thursday in November in the Temple Lounge at 10:30 AM. Next month, we will know what book we will discuss then. We are currently overwhelmed with donations to our library. For the next few months, please donate your books, except prayer books, to any branch of the Toledo Lucas County Library. Have a Happy New Year and an easy fast. Alice Applebaum Temple Librarian

Move to the music of the Maccabeats this fall

On September 8 at 2 p.m. at Temple Shomer Emunim, the Maccabeats will perform a free concert for all ages. The Maccabeats are an Orthodox Jewish all-male a cappella group, but as their website proclaims, they aren’t your Zayde’s synagogue choir. Founded in 2007 as Yeshiva University’s 14-member student vocal group, the Maccabeats specialize in covers and parodies of current hit songs with Jewish-themed lyrics. They are best known for their Jewish holiday songs, including a cover of Matisyahu’s Miracle. Each year, they release a well- received Hanukkah music video. The group, now comprised of seven members, has also produced original songs. While the Maccabeats beatbox to imitate instruments, they are strictly a vocal act. This spirited concert is for all community members.
