FLYERS vs. COYOTES This home-and-home will comprise the season series between the two clubs. The Flyers picked up a 4-3 shootout win over the Coyotes in February that snapped a four-game winless skid against the club (0-2-2) and was their first win in Arizona since January 4, 2014. The Flyers at one point went 3 ½ years, from late 2003 till early 2007, without facing the Coyotes; since that 3/12/07 game, the Flyers have a record of 8-7-3 in 18 games.

The Flyers have dropped their last two meetings with the Coyotes here in Philadelphia (0-1-1), with the most recent coming just over a year ago, a 4-3 OTL on October 30, 2017. Their last win over Arizona at the Wells Fargo Center was on February 27, 2016 (4-2).

2017-18 SERIES

Monday, October 30, 2017 – Arizona 4, Flyers 3 (OT) at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers completed a comeback from a 3-1 deficit with two goals in the final minute of regulation to force overtime, but Arizona scored with 14.4 seconds left in the extra period to take the 4-3 win. First-period goals by Jordan Martinook and Christian Dvorak and an early third-period power play goal by Brendan Perlini put the Coyotes up 3-0. The Flyers got on the board with a goal from Sean Couturier 40 seconds after Perlini’s tally. Then with the net empty in the game’s final minute, Jordan Weal scored at 19:07 and Couturier tallied again at 19:44 to knot things up. Alex Goligoski picked up the game-winner late in the OT frame. Scott Wedgewood earned the win with 28 saves on 31 shots, while Brian Elliott stopped 30 of 34 for the Flyers. Stars of the Game: 1 – Alex Goligoski; 2 – Sean Couturier; 3 – Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Saturday, February 10, 2018 – Flyers 4, Arizona 3 (SO) at Gila River Arena: A back-and-forth affair swung the Flyers’ way after they won their first shootout of the year in a seven-round session. After Arizona scored first 3:53 into the game on a goal by Jason Demers, the Flyers answered with a pair – Claude Giroux tallied on the power play at 10:19 and then Michael Raffl tallied at even strength at 11:41. Alex Goligoski evened it 24 seconds into the second period, but Wayne Simmonds answered on the power play just over two minutes later. Zac Rinaldo tied it for Arizona 1:59 into the third, and after there was no further scoring, the game went to a shootout. After Nick Cousins scored for Arizona in the first round, Brian Elliott sustained an injury during Arizona’s second attempt. But Michal Neuvirth didn’t allow a goal on the remaining five Arizona attempts and earned the win for his efforts. Jake Voracek gave the Flyers extended life on their last opportunity with a third-round shootout goal, and Patrick won it in Round 7. Raanta stopped 38 saves in regulation and OT. Stars of the Game: 1 – Nolan Patrick; 2 – Zac Rinaldo; 3 – Claude Giroux.

MONDAY’S GAME

Monday, November 5, 2018 – Flyers 5, Arizona 2 at Gila River Arena: The Flyers jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead and rode it to an eventual 5-2 win over Arizona. Claude Giroux opened the scoring with 7:26 left in the first period and Shayne Gostisbehere scored on the power play in the period’s final minute; later on, Sean Couturier scored with 2:55 left in the second and Giroux struck again 6:35 into the third. After the Coyotes pulled back within two goals, Oskar Lindblom iced it with an empty-netter. Cal Pickard made 35 saves to earn the win, while Darcy Kuemper made 29. Stars of the Game: 1 – Claude Giroux; 2 – Cal Pickard; 3 – Alex Galchenyuk.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT The Flyers earned seven of a possible eight points on their four-game Pacific Division road trip. They outscored their opponents 16-10 and did not have to play from behind at any point on the trip, as they did not trail in the four games other than San Jose’s OT game- winner.

In the last three seasons, the Flyers have had road trips of four games or more on eight occasions. They are 4-4 in the first home game back from those trips.

2017-18: 10-14-17, 8-2 W vs. WSH 1-2-18, 5-1 L vs. PIT

2016-17: 1-4-17, 5-2 L vs. NYR 3-13-17, 5-3 L vs. CBJ 3-28-17, 3-2 SOW vs. OTT

2015-16: 11-10-15, 4-0 L vs. COL 2-25-16, 3-2 W vs. MIN 3-28-16, 3-2 OTW vs. WPG

The Flyers remain second in the NHL in faceoff percentage at 54.9 on the season. Six Flyers with 60 or more faceoffs on the year are 55 percent or better, led by Scott Laughton and Nolan Patrick at 58.3 percent. Jori Lehtera is at 57.3 precent, followed by Jordan Weal at 57 percent and Claude Giroux at 56.8. Sean Couturier is sixth on the roster at 55 percent, which prior to last night’s games would make him the top faceoff performer on eight other teams (FLA, MTL, NYR, SJS, TBL, VGK, WSH).

Claude Giroux is slated tonight to play in his 754th career game, which will move him past Chris Therien into sole possession of fourth place in Flyers history. It will leave him 36 games behind Brian Propp, who is in third at 790 career games.

Giroux is also nearing opportunities to move into fourth all-time in scoring, after which he would trail only Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber and Brian Propp, and second all-time in assists, which would only trail Clarke.

Giroux leads the Flyers in scoring with five goals and 12 assists for 17 points, which tied him for 17th in the league entering last night’s games.

Wayne Simmonds has seven goals on the season, which leads the team. Simmonds has had at least 24 goals in each of his six full seasons with the Flyers. In 2015-16, when he had his career-high 32 goals, Simmonds only had one goal in the first 13 games.

Ivan Provorov is averaging 25:14 of ice time per game, which ranks 9th in the NHL. He leads the league in that category among players 22 or younger; none of the players ahead of him are under the age of 24. Provorov has played 179 NHL games since making the Flyers roster in 2016, which is tied with Connor McDavid for the most games played by a member of the 2015 draft class since the start of the 2016-17 season.
