International Studies Fourteen years ago, faculty and parents on the lower campus began a tradition that has become an important part of the lower school curriculum today. International Day began as a performance that showcased different countries from around the world. Today, International Studies is a year-long exploration of selected countries. Students learn about culture, geography, landmarks, music, art, and dance. The 2009 program included numerous guest speakers, field trips, in-class research, and even a film produced by the Third Grade that took it’s viewers on a trip around the world. International Day 2009 was titled “Children of the Universe” and was a celebration of cultural diversity, emphasizing the importance of peace and humanity.

China Partnership Global awareness and familiarity with foreign cultures will be required for personal success in the very near future. Therefore, plans are being made to take groups of PBDA students to China annually. Traveling to visit our Chinese partner schools, Alliance Primary School in Hong Kong and Living Hope Orphanage in Beijing, will not only expose our students to a far away culture, but will also connect them to other children in that culture - making the experience far more than a typical tour. Our purpose and goal is to build relationships between our school and our China partners living a half a world away for many years to come. We believe the experience will benefit the children who go, and the children who simply hear the stories of the adventure. We also believe the benefits will reach far into the future of our ever-changing world.

Reggio Emilia Philosophy In a small rural village in Northern Italy, wonderful things are happening for children. The early childhood programs in Reggio Emilia have garnered acclaim from educational experts such as Howard Gardner and Steve Seidel at Harvard University and psychologist Jerome Bruner. Palm Beach Day Academy is part of the Florida Reggio Collaborative and is taking steps to learn, understand and implement Reggio inspired approaches in it’s early childhood classrooms. In December 2009, Donna Tobey will travel to Reggio Emilia with a U.S. delegation to learn firsthand about the schools in the small village in Italy.

Dom Helder Camara photos reams are an important part of life. They encourage us to think big. They provide direction rooted in hope, and they’re often the beginning of bringing things to reality. DreamsD are also important in the life of a school. While we have adhered tightly to our mission over the decades, we also must dream about the methods we’ll use to fulfill it as we grow as a school, and adapt to the new demands that society presents to our graduates. Over the last two years, we’ve been assessing what must be done programmatically and considering the implications that our plans have for our facilities. Dreams have emerged and we are refining and evaluating them to determine what will be required to bring them to reality.

One of our dreams is the building of our Performing Arts Program and providing our students the necessary facilities. Guided by a Matthews Performing Arts Advisory Committee, we have plans for recapturing our Matthews Auditorium as a performance area with state of the art acoustics and theater seating. The plans include an expansion for band and orchestra areas.

We are also just beginning to move from the dream stage to reality as we announce the purchase of the Unity Church property and field on the Lower Campus. This acquisition will allow us to create a comprehensive Early Childhood campus with facilities that will enable the offering of a program for our students that will be unsurpassed anywhere.

Much of the shaping of our dreams has been done by members of the faculty, the Board of Trustees, and Pa l m Be a c h Da y Ac ad e m y advisory committees. As we have committees forming and architects working, we’re preparing for a feasibility is a coeducational independent study that will give us an idea of enthusiasm and support for these projects in the larger school community.
