Signature: ________________________ Date: ______________ i ABSTRACT The focus of this dissertation is to analyse the balance between interpretative and vocal ability in bel canto opera, which is traditionally considered as the principal domain of the Stimmediva. The dissertation includes a survey of the characteristics of bel canto, Bellini’s contribution to it and the performance history of his opera Norma. Furthermore, it investigates the German differentiation between Kunstdiva and Stimmediva as exemplified by two major sopranos of the twentieth century, Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. Callas’s performance of Norma is universally recognised as a watershed in the performance history of this role, and Sutherland is widely regarded as her most important immediate successor. Their distinct approaches to the scena from Act 1 of Norma are contrasted and compared. Three respondents were asked to evaluate recordings of this scena by these two artists with regard to style, technique and interpretation. Their responses are presented in table format, and a discussion of the insights that emerge from these form the final part of the dissertation. The conclusion notes the primacy of interpretative ability in the appreciation of vocal performance even within the bel canto style, but argues for a complete integration of dramatic and vocal skills in order to arrive at the ideal interpretation.     A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

    A Culture of Recording: Christopher Raeburn and the Decca Record Company Sally Elizabeth Drew A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of Music This work was supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council September 2018 1 2 Abstract This thesis examines the working culture of the Decca Record Company, and how group interaction and individual agency have made an impact on the production of music recordings. Founded in London in 1929, Decca built a global reputation as a pioneer of sound recording with access to the world’s leading musicians. With its roots in manufacturing and experimental wartime engineering, the company developed a peerless classical music catalogue that showcased technological innovation alongside artistic accomplishment. This investigation focuses specifically on the contribution of the recording producer at Decca in creating this legacy, as can be illustrated by the career of Christopher Raeburn, the company’s most prolific producer and specialist in opera and vocal repertoire. It is the first study to examine Raeburn’s archive, and is supported with unpublished memoirs, private papers and recorded interviews with colleagues, collaborators and artists. Using these sources, the thesis considers the history and functions of the staff producer within Decca’s wider operational structure in parallel with the personal aspirations of the individual in exerting control, choice and authority on the process and product of recording. Having been recruited to Decca by John Culshaw in 1957, Raeburn’s fifty-year career spanned seminal moments of the company’s artistic and commercial lifecycle: from assisting in exploiting the dramatic potential of stereo technology in Culshaw’s Ring during the 1960s to his serving as audio producer for the 1990 The Three Tenors Concert international phenomenon.

    Making an English Voice: Performing National Identity during the English Musical Renaissance In a 1925 article for Music & Letters entitled ‘On the Composition of English Songs’, the British musicologist Edward J. Dent urged the ‘modern English composer’ to turn serious attention to the development of ‘a real technique of song-writing’.1 As Dent underlined, ‘song-writing affects the whole style of English musical composition’, for we English are by natural temperament singers rather than instrumentalists […] If there is an English style in music it is founded firmly on vocal principles, and, indeed, I have heard Continental observers remark that our whole system of training composers is conspicuously vocal as compared with that of other countries. The man who was born with a fiddle under his chin, so conspicuous in the music of Central and Eastern Europe, hardly exists for us.     CECILIA GASDIA Cecilia Gasdia was born in Verona in 1960; she is an Italian operatic soprano. Gasdia studied music and piano at the Conservatorio di Verona, graduating in 1980. That same year she won the first prize in the "New Voices for Opera" competition dedicated to Maria Callas. In 1981 she made her operatic debut in Florence as Giulietta in Bellini's I Capuleti e i Montecchi and rose to prominence following her successful debut at La Scala in 1982 when at very short notice she replaced Montserrat Caballé in the title role of Donizetti's Anna Bolena. Following her debut at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro in 1983 she became a well-known singer in Rossini's operas during the 1980s, with 14 different Rossinian roles in her repertoire. She made her American debut on 5 October 1985 as Gilda in a concert performance of Rigoletto in Philadelphia conducted by Riccardo Muti (repeated on 8 October at Carnegie Hall) In the same year she made her Lyric Opera of Chicago debut as Giulietta in I Capuleti e i Montecchi. John Von Rhein of the Chicago Tribune wrote of her performance: "With her pale features and petite, high-waisted figure, Gasdia looked as if she had stepped out of a painting by Raphael. She sang with a sweetness, purity and fluency of tone that was rich in soft shadings and consistent in quality from the top to bottom of her range." Von Rhein (2 March 2008) Her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1986 as another 'Juliette', this time in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette.

    1 Note: this article appeared on the occasion of the first commercial release of Callas's television appearances for home video The Life and Deaths of Maria Callas (Nov. 1995, The New Yorker) ​ If only she hadn't gotten mixed up with Ari and Jackie, we would be less aware of Maria Callas's life after singing, and that would be better. Here was the most celebrated operatic soprano of the 20th century, unable to find peace or purpose in her 12 years of premature retirement and unable to rehabilitate herself as a performer, winding up an overmedicated recluse in Paris, a city that never knew her in her prime. By the time she died there in 1977, at 53, her career had long since ebbed into fitful and mostly unfulfilled comeback projects, and her fame -- the pure, resonant fame of noble achievement -- had long since been admixed with notoriety. The stormy, capricious diva who abandoned husband and stage for a seductive billionaire, only to be dumped in favor of a President's widow, attained to levels of name recognition that merely singing in opera could never have brought. Callas is remembered as Puccini's Tosca, the role in which she was best photographed, and since Tosca herself is a celebrated opera singer who gets into desperate straits, a reciprocal identification has proved irresistible.     Opera Le opere di Rossini: discografia critica Gian Guido Mussomeli Nonostante il moltiplicarsi di allestimenti scenici e prima, pubblicata dalla Ricordi nel 1959 e recentemente incisioni discografiche dovuto agli effetti della Rossini ripresa in CD dalla Carrére, può contare su validi renaissance di questi ultimi venticinque anni, non cantanti come una giovanissima Renata Scotto, Nicola siamo ancora giunti ad avere una discografia completa Monti, Rolando Panerai, Mario Petri e Renato Capecchi, delle opere rossiniane. Mancano, a tutt’oggi, incisioni purtroppo parzialmente neutralizzati dalla direzione di recenti e/o decenti de L’inganno felice, La Gazzetta, Renato Fasano, calzante esempio di criteri toscaniniani Matilde di Shabran e della versione francese del Mosè. applicati a un repertorio che non li sopporta.
