Tenure-track system at Shizuoka University aims to provide promising young researchers with opportunities to promote their scientific carriers and to develop their talents and skills in research, leadership, management, and education. The holder of the tenure-track position is promoted to a tenured position upon successful completion of the tenure-track program within five years.

Job Description We are searching for a tenure-track researcher (lecturer or assistant professor) who conducts research on the analysis of human or socio-economic phenomena by applying statistical/computational modeling or statistical machine- for the design of various information or social systems and innovative services. Examples of the application fields include HCI/HRI, social computing, computational social science, applied econometrics, , , and others.

The holder of the tenure-track position is primarily expected to undertake scientific research in her/his respective field. However, since eventually s/he will also undertake teaching responsibilities, our tenure-track program includes duties to teach students including their thesis projects. During the tenure-track program, more than 70% of working time should be devoted to the research activity, and less than 30% should be for others including teaching load. After being tenured as a faculty member, the applicant is required to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in statistics, statistical/computational modeling, and application technologies related to the modeling.

Details of the Tenure-Track Program Duration Five years from the start of employment (The promotion procedure is described below.)

Assessment of Tenure-Track Positions Performance of the tenure-track position holder will be evaluated on a regular basis. The assessment will be aimed at evaluating his/her capabilities in scientific research, leadership and management, acquisition of competitive research funding, and providing teaching and tutorship for Bachelor/Master course students. The assessment will take into account the original research plan, mid-term and final research goals submitted at the start of employment, and results of interviews. The assessment will be scheduled as follows:

1. Yearly evaluation will take place at the end of the first, second, and fourth year. 2. Interim assessment will be conducted within the month following the expiry of two and a half years since the start of employment. 3. The final assessment will be conducted before the expiry of four and a half years since the start of employment. Successful lecturer (assistant professor) will be promoted to associate professor (lecturer) and acquire tenure until the retirement age (currently 65 years old).

Remuneration: Annual salary system 1. Allowances, including those for dependents, executive, housing, commutation, extra work, overtime and late-night work will be provided in accordance with the Shizuoka University guidelines. 2. Relocation expenses will be covered in accordance with the Shizuoka University guidelines.

Research Support 1. During the first year, a start-up fund (3 million 5 hundred thousand yen as of 2018) and an independent research space will be provided. During the remaining years, research fund will be provided. We strongly encourage the successful candidate to apply to research grants other than our research fund. It is possible that the research fund may be changed by the situation of a future budget. 2. The successful candidate shall conduct her/his research under the guidance of mentor/research advisor. S/he will manage her/his laboratory to supervise students’ research activities.

Place of work The successful candidate shall work at Hamamatsu Campus of Shizuoka University (Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan).

Qualifications 1. Applicants must possess a doctoral degree obtained or have promise to obtain it by March 31, 2019. 2. Applicants must possess a doctoral degree obtained within ten years as of April 1, 2019 3. Applicants must have enthusiasm for research and education in the emerging field of Behavior Informatics. Approximately 70% of efforts during the period of the tenure-track program will be focused on research and 30% on teaching and others. 4. Applicants whose native language is not Japanese must demonstrate their plan to reach a level of proficiency in Japanese language sufficient for teaching, within the period of tenure-track program. Selection Procedure Selection is made by considering achievements, prospects, enthusiasm for research and education and collaborative nature with current faculty members. If several applicants have similar abilities, then female or foreign applicants or applicants with a doctoral degree obtained in foreign countries will get an advantage.
