This huge number contains an equally huge paradox, since many of these young people have a vision and an idea which could provide them with employment. My Prince’s Youth Business International exists to turn these ideas into reality and I could not be more proud of all that YBI continues to do to address this challenge.

It has never been easy for young people to set up a new venture. They need to find the money in the first place; to carry the venture until it obtains an income from selling goods or services; to support it in bad times and to expand it in good times. They also need to find good managers and expert advice which they can trust. In many countries they have to work in an environment where law is uncertain and public services unreliable and, in some cases, to overcome deep-seated cultural barriers to success. The current global economic downturn has made the situation even more complex. If anything, it has increased the relevance and urgency of YBI’s work. To a great extent our futures depend on the innovation, energy and enterprise of young people. This is powerfully demonstrated by the winner of the 2008 YBI Entrepreneur of the Year award. Ramu Uyyala, from Hyderabad in India, was supported by YBI’s local partner to start a company to recycle plastic bags. Ramu has not only developed a profitable business, but has been able to create work for over 40 people, many of them disadvantaged women, thereby making a huge difference to the local community. He has also improved the local environment for other businesses that rely on his company to buy cheap plastic bags.

4. Independence from IBLF 6. Trustees remuneration
