The analyses focus on the deviations of the optical axis of the photo-camera which occurred during photogrammetric flights carried out on the same route but during several Antarctic expeditions performed in subsequent years (2014 and 2015). The results were subjected to correlation tests with weather conditions (wind speed and variability). The basis for these analyses are the data from the onboard signal recorder integrated with an autopilot. 1. Introduction MONICA is the acronym for the Polish-Norwegian project funded by the Norway Grants programme entitled „Monitoring the impact of climate change on Antarctic ecosystems”. The project is carried out under the patronage of the Na- tional Centre for Research and Development and involves three partner institutions: the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Warsaw University of Technology, and the Norwegian Northern Research Institute. The objective of the project was to study the impact of climate change on the Antarctic ecosystem and biodiversity by moni- toring penguin populations, which are the bio-indicator of the abundance of marine waters in the Antarctic region [1] (Fig.1), and performing photogrammetric work on the selected areas called the ASPA (Antarctic Special Protected Areas ASPA 128 and ASPA 151) on King George Island, the largest of the South Shetland Islands (Fig.2). -

Yet, comparatively less is known about how lichens–obligate symbiotic organisms–respond to disturbance. Successful establishment and development of lichens require a minimum of two compatible yet usually unrelated species to be present in an environment, suggesting disturbance might be particularly detrimental. To address this gap, we focused on lichens, which are obligate symbiotic organ- isms that function as hubs of trophic interactions. Our investigation was conducted in the southern Appalachian Mountains, USA. We conducted complete biodiversity inventories of lichens (all growth forms, reproductive modes, substrates) across 47, 1-ha plots to test classic models of responses to disturbance (e.g., linear, unimodal). Disturbance was quantifed in each plot using a standardized suite of habitat quality variables. We additionally quantifed woody plant diversity, forest density, rock density, as well as environmental factors (elevation, temperature, precipitation, net primary productivity, slope, aspect) and analyzed their impacts on lichen biodiversity. Our analyses recovered a strong, positive, linear relationship between lichen biodiversity and habitat quality: lower levels of disturbance correlate to higher species diversity. With few exceptions, additional variables failed to signifcantly explain variation in diversity among plots for the 509 total lichen species, but we caution that total variation in some of these variables was limited in our study area. -

POLISH POLAR RESEARCH 13 3-4 273-302 1992 List of place-names in Antarctica introduced by Poland in 1978-1990 The place-names listed here in alphabetical order, have been introduced to the areas of King George Island and parts of Nelson Island (West Antarctica), and the surroundings of A. B. Dobrowolski Station at Bunger Hills (East Antarctica) as the result of Polish activities in these regions during the period of 1977-1990. The place-names connected with the activities of the Polish H. Arctowski Station have been* published by Birkenmajer (1980, 1984) and Tokarski (1981). Some of them were used on the Polish maps: 1:50,000 Admiralty Bay and 1:5,000 Lions Rump. The sheet reference is to the maps 1:200,000 scale, British Antarctic Territory, South Shetland Islands, published in 1968: King George Island (sheet W 62 58) and Bridgeman Island (Sheet W 62 56). Nine species were found breeding in the study area: Chinstrap Penguin Pygoscelis antarctica (an estimated 6820 breeding pairs at two colonies surveyed), Pintado or Cape Petrel Daption capense (36), Wilson’s Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus (3), Antarctic Cormorant Phalacrocorax atriceps bransfieldensis (9), Greater Sheathbill Chionis alba (2), Subantarctic Skua Catharacta antarctica (4), South Polar Skua C. maccormicki (11), Kelp Gull Larus dominicanus (49) and Antarctic Tern Sterna vittata (5). Due to the increasing tourist activity at Deception Island, better information on the location and size of breeding populations is a particular requirement if effective precautionary conservation actions are to be taken. In this study, a Geographical Information System (GIS) was used to obtain information on position and altitude of geographic features at the Keller Peninsula (KP), King George Island, Antarctica, as represented in a topographic map, a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) and an orthophoto. Using a GIS, points representing KP features were digitized, and their geographical coordinates and altitude were compared with the same features already recorded in the SCAR CGA. Among the 21 place names analyzed, only 3 showed correct location and altitude information. Nevertheless, we show that it is easy to update the SCAR CGA by using a GIS and planialtimetric data with good accuracy.
