If you wait even a minute, everything has changed,” she said. Dr. Rothenberg earned her doctorate in clinical psychology and has worked as a psychotherapist and as a certified yoga instructor. “Just as psychology reveals the hidden aspects of the unconscious, photography reveals the aspects of nature that might otherwise be missed,” she said. She particularly enjoys macro (close-up) photography with birds or wild flowers as her subjects. “The closer you look, the more you see. The observer merges with the lens of the camera to become a witness to unexpected drama, stunning beauty, design, color, and form, all in relationship to the ever-changing light,” she said. As a psychotherapist, Dr. Rothenberg has had a long-standing interest in dreams. When she takes pictures, she enjoys creating a dream-like quality with her images and tries to capture a feeling of tranquility and peace. Known for both realistic and ethereal images, Dr. Rothenberg has broadened her perspective in the past year by turning her wide angle lens to the striking landscapes of Pennsylvania and New York. Library hours to view her work are 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. THE APPLIANCE STORE Locally Owned & Operated for over 50 Years! Editor’s Message

visit us on: 1286 East 2nd Street • Jamestown, NY (716) 665-2317 www.acmeappliancewny.com It’s All In Your Mind Thomas Edison once told a reporter, “The chief function of your body is to carry your brain around.” Your brain is a pretty useful thing, alright. Never leave home without it. Deep inside your brain, for instance, is the movie screen where your eyes project all their images. Everything you see winds up in your mind. As a matter of fact, you could say the whole universe is in your mind. Does it ever feel crowded in there, with everything bumping into everything else? This week the Jamestown Gazette introduces you to Galactic Systems, so far the only astronautical engineering and science research company to house its world headquarters in Jamestown, New York. Galactic Systems takes a unique approach to the jostling and bumping of everything inside the human brain. People who like to organize things usually place art and science at opposite corners of the mental world. Galactic Systems treats art and science as partners. Albert Einstein said, “The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious—the fundamental emotion which stands at the cradle of true art and true science.” Scientists and artists are both creative problem solvers; they share many of the same mental traits. At Galactic Systems, CEO Conor McGibboney, creates an environment for musicians and engineers, computer scientists and actors, teachers and students to collaborate. Creativity in one field can inspire new ways of thinking in another. For you and me, the lesson is simple; next time you have a problem, talk to somebody with an entirely different view of the world from yours, somebody whose work and life are nothing like whatever you are used to. If you are an analytical thinker, talk to an artist; if you are an emotional person, talk to a mathematician. You may be surprised, even delighted, by what a different point of view can do for you. The X-Files told us, “The answer is out there.” They were wrong. It’s all in your mind. The whole universe is in there, maybe even a solution for lots of interesting problems.

Enjoy the read.

Not in my front yard Most people keep their yards clean. Some front lawns even look as nice as a park. So why do some people think our city parks are the place to dump their trash? The other day I was at a park WHINEWHINE where children were playing, folks were picnicking…and the trash cans our City Sanitation OFOF THETHE Department faithfully empties…were surrounded by paper, cans and bottles left anywhere else but IN the cans. Try to step a little closer, people, when you toss WEEK!WEEK!your trash on the grass for the wind to take all over the park and my neighborhood. I don’t want your trash in my front yard.

Whether it’s dinner with when it only took one friends, a night out on the town, hanging out arm to hold her. MY BABY!” (And that, my dear readers, is a direct quote.) I couldn’t believe that the beautiful little bundle with the gorgeous eyes was mine. Now, as I watch her toddle around, I can’t help but think of how fast it is going. Behind the pride in Daniel LaQuay my child and the confidence I portray is a voice that murmurs 38 North Franklin Street in my ear, day in and day out, things like: ‘Are you doing Cattaraugus, NY 14719 enough? What if you don’t teach her everything she needs to (716)257-5512 studio know? Shouldn’t you be taking her to baby algebra classes or something?!’ This voice never shuts up or takes a holiday, and Appointments Only! often gets on my nerves. e-mail: This voice, I think, visits (or, more likely, harasses) other “Do all to the glory of God.” [email protected] mothers as well. I don’t think mothers talk about it much, 1 Corinthians 10:31b but sometimes I feel as if we should have a 12 step program for mother’s guilt. We are guilty about things we have done, Photo Retouching • Caricatures • Ad Layout things we have not done, and things we have yet to do. We are Graphic Design • Creative Websites & MORE!!! guilty because we gave our children binkies, even though their teeth will probably be crooked. We are guilty because we left the baby with the baby sitter just so we could have a cup of coffee. We are guilty because we don’t have the ninety billion educational toys that improve the baby’s language, motor, and emotional capacity, but we have watched several episodes of “Dora the Explorer.” A mother’s guilt makes traditional, old world Catholics look carefree. It seems to me that this voice, where ever it originates from within, also speaks from without as well. It is as if, on the whole, everyone thinks that once a woman has a child, she becomes perfect. She will never forget her diaper bag, a soccer practice, or a birthday. Her house will be spotless, her meals will be organic gourmet, and regardless of whether she works or not, she will always have time to volunteer at her church, the SPCA, and the homeless shelter. Never again will she be seen in anything but perfectly clean and pressed clothes, accompanied by heels, a strand of pearls, make up, and a smile. She will never feel anything but elated…because, well, she’s a mother! She is incapable of anything less.

Let me tell you right now: I am not perfect. I have made mistakes, I have forgotten important things, I seldom wear make-up, and my cooking has dwindled to anything that is quick and easy. When you become a mother, you cannot explain the mixture of feelings you have. When your baby is born, you are not instantly transformed into some angelic being who can magically balance this new responsibility, as well as everything else, flawlessly. Being a parent is difficult; at times, it can be the hardest thing anyone has ever attempted. At the beginning, I expected to be somehow transfigured into this mythical, magical person who could do everything right. I have come to realize that I am not. The best I can do is exactly that: I can do everything in my power to be the best that I can at any given moment. I can show my child that I love her daily. If I make a mistake, I can take pains to correct it, learn from it, and move on. There is no perfection in this life, folks. That’s just a fairy tale. If today is one of our bad days, the best we can do is hope for a better tomorrow.
