Yealand Storrs to Hawes Water

An easy access walk which can be enjoyed by everyone

This short walk of about 3km starts from the roadside layby at Yealand Storrs (Grid reference SD494762).

From the layby, go back to the road junction and turn right through the gate into the woods The path leads through a lovely section of limestone pavement. In Spring you can see the beautiful flowers of the Early- purple orchid as well as Primrose and Cowslip.

At the top of a short rise, pass through a gate and continue along the track. The trees are stunted here due to the winds from the bay and also the lack of soil with the limestone lying just beneath the surface.

Keep an eye open for our two local Woodpeckers, the Green and the Greater-spotted, flying from tree to tree or listen out for their drumming in Spring.

Pass through another gate and continue on down the track, bearing left when the path forks. At the end of the path, go through the gate into the pasture, and ignoring the arrow directing you straight ahead, bear left and then immediately right to rejoin the public footpath. Take a moment to enjoy the wonderful view of Hawes Water which lies within the Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve.

Walk across the pasture towards one of only two natural lakes in ! Go through the gate and turn right onto the boardwalk where you will find a bench to sit and enjoy the tranquil beauty.

Suitably rested, you will now need to retrace your steps to the start.

Please note that the path can deteriorate after periods of wet weather.

For all our walks, we recommend you wear sturdy shoes and suitable clothing and also take a copy of Ordnance Survey map OL7 Your day out in the Yealands
