Country Policy and Information Note Afghanistan: Sikhs and Hindus Version 5.0 May 2019 Preface Purpose This note provides country of origin information (COI) and analysis of COI for use by Home Office decision makers handling particular types of protection and human rights claims (as set out in the basis of claim section). It is not intended to be an exhaustive survey of a particular subject or theme. It is split into two main sections: (1) analysis and assessment of COI and other evidence; and (2) COI. These are explained in more detail below. Assessment This section analyses the evidence relevant to this note – i.e. the COI section; refugee/human rights laws and policies; and applicable caselaw – by describing this and its inter-relationships, and provides an assessment on whether, in general: x A person is reasonably likely to face a real risk of persecution or serious harm x A person is able to obtain protection from the state (or quasi state bodies) x A person is reasonably able to relocate within a country or territory x Claims are likely to justify granting asylum, humanitarian protection or other form of leave, and x If a claim is refused, it is likely or unlikely to be certifiable as ‘clearly unfounded’ under section 94 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002. Decision makers must, however, still consider all claims on an individual basis, taking into account each case’s specific facts. Country of origin information The country information in this note has been carefully selected in accordance with the general principles of COI research as set out in the Common EU [European Union] Guidelines for Processing Country of Origin Information (COI), dated April 2008, and the Austrian Centre for Country of Origin and Asylum Research and Documentation’s (ACCORD), Researching Country Origin Information – Training Manual, 2013.

  • What Are the Most Important Qualities God Should Have? List As Many As You Can Think of in the Back of Your Book
In and On - What are the most important qualities God should have? List as many as you can think of in the back of your book. What do Sikhs believe about God? Objectives • Identify the main Sikh beliefs about God. • Explain what similarities and differences there are between Sikhism and other faiths (Hinduism/Christianity) • Evaluate the question of whether or not we can ever know the nature of God. What do Sikhs believe? Sikhs are monotheistic, this means…. God is a spiritual presence so he does not have a body. He sees and knows everything and is all powerful and eternal. He was never born and will never die. Sikhs believe that you should worship and love God because God is good and he cares about all things in creation. We cannot fully understand God because he is so much greater than us. Sikhs do not use “he” or “she” because without a body God cannot be male or female. There are two names that Sikhs use for God; Satnam which means eternal and Raheguru meaning “Wonderful Lord” What is the Mool Mantra Key term = The Mool Mantra is a basic prayer which sums up the Sikh beliefs about God. • What is a mantra? – Something that is chanted or sung. • The Mool Mantra was originally written in Punjabi. • We are going to listen to the Mool Mantra being chanted. • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKnOqJaUc5Y (you only need to listen to a few minutes of the 28 minute video!) What is the Mool Mantra? • The Mool Mantra is a Sikh prayer that explains what God is like.

Birth ◦ Islamic invasions had continued spread of Islam in Northern India. Lodi dynasty was the ruling dynasty of the time. Guru Nanak also witnessed fall of Lodi clan and barbaric attacks of Babar laying the foundation of Mughal dynasty. ◦ Indian society was in a state of exploitation, confusion and darkness. ◦ Among Hindus, Vedic and Upanishadic values had diluted. Caste divide was rampantly practiced. Elite Brahmins / Pundits openly looted innocent farmers and laymen in the name of rituals and religion. ◦ Besides the exploitative rulers, there were three categories holding social power. Pundits who proclaimed to be guardians of Dharma and exploited people with their hypocrisy. Qazis, the Muslim judges, who were corrupt and decided court cases based on bribes given to them. Jogis, the distorted version of sanyasi Yogi, who looted innocent population in the name of tantra and mantra. ◦ Guru Nanak condemned all of them in addition to the ruling class and brought in a fresh air of spiritual enlightenment that freed people from bondage of bigotry, and introduced them to an integrated humanity having no discrimination based on religion, caste, gender or any other basis.

  • Contemporary Evidence on Sikh Rites and Rituals in the Eighteenth Century
179 Karamjit K. Malhotra: Sikh Rites and Rituals Contemporary Evidence on Sikh Rites and Rituals in the Eighteenth Century Karamjit K Malhotra Panjab University, Chandigarh ________________________________________________________________ This paper on Sikh rites and rituals analyses the whole range of contemporary evidence on the eighteenth century in three phases for observing continuity and change in the rites of initiation, birth, marriage and death. The Sikh sources are relevant for all the three phases, the Persian sources associated with the Mughal empire are relevant for the first, and the European accounts for the third. Two major findings emerge from this study: the continuity of normative statements on Sikh rites and rituals in which the Brahman priest and Brahmanical scriptures had no role, and there was a large degree of correspondence between the normative statements and empirical evidence on Sikh rites and rituals. _______________________________________________________________ Introduction No historian of the Sikhs has brought rites and rituals of the Sikhs during the eighteenth century directly into focus. Harjot Oberoi, for example, looks upon rituals as ‘a key element in the construction of religious identity’, and underlines the importance of the ‘rites of passage’ for Sikh identity. He maintains that prior to the Khalsa transformation, the Sikhs possessed only a fluid identity, and did not think of ‘a distinct set of life-cycle rituals’. The Khalsa introduced new rites related to birth, initiation and death which ‘endowed an individual with a new and bounded identity’ to demarcate the Khalsa from the rest of the ‘civil society’. Oberoi presents these rituals in a few paragraphs on the Chaupa Singh Rahitnama which he places between 1750 and 1765.

  • The Shiromani Akali Dal and Emerging Ideological Cleavages in Contemporary Sikh Politics in Punjab: Integrative Regionalism Versus Exclusivist Ethnonationalism
143 Jugdep Chima: Ideological Cleavages in Sikh Politics The Shiromani Akali Dal and Emerging Ideological Cleavages in Contemporary Sikh Politics in Punjab: Integrative Regionalism versus Exclusivist Ethnonationalism Jugdep Singh Chima Hiram College, USA ________________________________________________________________ This article describes the emerging ideological cleavages in contemporary Sikh politics, and attempts to answer why the Shiromani Akali Dal has taken a moderate stance on Sikh ethnic issues and in its public discourse in the post-militancy era? I put forward a descriptive argument that rhetorical/ideological cleavages in contemporary Sikh politics in Punjab can be differentiated into two largely contrasting poles. The first is the dominant Akali Dal (Badal) which claims to be the main leadership of the Sikh community, based on its majority in the SGPC and its ability to form coalition majorities in the state assembly in Punjab. The second pole is an array of other, often internally fractionalized, Sikh political and religious organizations, whose claim for community leadership is based on the espousal of aggressive Sikh ethnonationalism and purist religious identity. The “unity” of this second pole within Sikh politics is not organizational, but rather, is an ideological commitment to Sikh ethnonationalism and political opposition to the moderate Shiromani Akali Dal. The result of these two contrasting “poles” is an interesting ethno-political dilemma in which the Akali Dal has pragmatic electoral success in democratic elections
