Week of Welcome to start Tuesday

Marshall’s annual Week of Welcome (WOW) is a series of events and activities designed to welcome new Sons and Daughters of Marshall into the Marshall family before fall classes begin on Monday, Aug. 20.

The schedule of informative and fun activities kicks off Tuesday, Aug. 14, with freshman move-in at our residence halls.

“Week of Welcome is a university-wide, collaborative effort to welcome, educate and socialize freshman students to the Marshall University campuses, academic expectations, resources and long-standing traditions,” said Dr. Sherri Stepp, associate dean of undergraduate studies and director of University College.

Students will begin their first class at Marshall during Week of Welcome. UNI 100, “Freshman First Class” is an introduction to the academic structures and expectations of college life. Those who successfully complete the course will earn one hour of elective credit.

“During WOW, students will participate in large group sessions where they will explore the value of diversity, attend a theatrical performance illustrating the history of our university’s namesake, John Marshall, and be presented with information about sexual assault awareness and guidance on bystander responsibilities,” Stepp said. “In smaller classroom sessions, students will learn about the vast number of resources and services we have to offer and support student success.”

Attendance at the required WOW activities and seven additional 50-minute class sessions (once per week in the first seven weeks of the semester) will play a large role in the grade students earn for UNI 100.

“Week of Welcoming programming is also available for students attending classes at our the Mid-Ohio Valley Center, Teays Valley Regional Center and South Charleston campus. Students attending these regional campuses and centers are also invited to come to Huntington to participate in the evening and weekend activities and events,” Stepp said.

School of Medicine welcomes Class of 2022 with White Coat Ceremony

The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine welcomed its newest class of students with the annual White Coat Ceremony Friday, Aug. 3, at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center on Marshall University’s Huntington campus.

The Class of 2022 includes student-athletes, student government representatives, passionate researchers, first-generation college students, and those who have traveled abroad for educational and/or mission work. The class includes alumni from Georgetown University, Wake Forest University, The Ohio State University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and many others, as well as five legacy students, meaning one or both parents are Marshall School of Medicine alumni. Other interesting statistics include the following:

 80 percent are West Virginia residents  37 are males; 43 are females  88 percent were science majors  The average age is 23 years old

Among this year’s class of 79 incoming medical students are the school’s first cohort of students from its

Accelerated B.S./M.D. program, which allows students to complete the requirements for both the Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine program in a seven-year format. This group of 13 West Virginia students started their undergraduate degrees at Marshall University in 2015.

“We are exceptionally proud of this inaugural B.S./M.D. class,” said Jennifer Plymale, associate dean for admissions and director of the Center for Rural Health at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. “These students represent some of the best and brightest young minds in our state.”

The White Coat Ceremony, during which incoming students receive their first white coats, stethoscopes and medical instruments, was first introduced at Marshall in 1996. It is considered a rite of passage for first-year students and is designed to instill the values of professionalism, humanism and compassionate care.

The ceremony’s guest speaker was Jay R. Lakhani, M.D., assistant professor in the department of pediatrics at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, a board-certified pediatrician with Marshall Health and member of the Class of 2007. Lakhani is also a 2018 recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Leonard Tow Award, which recognizes faculty members who demonstrate clinical excellence and outstanding compassion in the delivery of medical care and who show respect for patients, their families and health care colleagues.

Other speakers included David Bartlett, president of the Class of 2021; Bobby L. Miller, M.D., vice dean for medical student education; and Angela Thorp, a fourth-year medical student.

Since 2006, the Touma family, including Joseph B. Touma, M.D., a retired ear, nose and throat specialist and former chair of the Marshall University Board of Governors, and his wife, Omayma T. Touma, M.D., retired medical director of the Cabell-Huntington Health Department, have generously donated funds to provide each student with a stethoscope. Their daughter, Mona Touma Elliot, J.D., presented the gifts during the ceremony. More than 110 School of Medicine alumni, family and friends sponsored the white coats and medical instruments for the Class of 2022.

Marshall Wind Symphony announces upcoming concert season

The School of Music has announced the upcoming concert season of its Wind Symphony, which will revolve around the theme, “Music for Social Change.”

The first concert, planned for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, will feature pieces from all female composers, including Alex Shapiro’s “Tight Squeeze,” which utilizes pre-recorded electronics with the live acoustic band, and “Tocata and La Tumba de Alejandro Carcia Caturla” by Shelley Hanson, a fresh take on traditional Latin music. Its first movement features the entire ensemble acting as percussionists.

Other numbers include “An Introduction to the Moon” by Libby Larsen, which has performers improvising over a spoken poem, and “In My Father’s Eyes” by Julie Giroux, written in memory of the 1963 Birmingham, Alabama, church bombing and which features a children’s choir and solo cellist. The School of Music will team up with the Women’s Studies program, which will offer additional readings, as well as resources for women.

The second concert, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, will be the world premiere of a piece by renowned composer Tyler S. Grant, written specifically for Marshall University. The “Music for Social Change” theme will continue with David Maslanka’s epic piece, “Hymn for World Peace.”

Second-semester concerts begin Feb. 15 with a performance for the High School Honor Band and continue the theme as well, by adding new works such as “Harvest: Trombone Concerto” by John Mackey with soloist Dr. Michael Stroeher. The concert season will conclude May 2 with “there are no words” by Jim Stephenson, written in response to the 2015 church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina.

“This profound and emotional work must be experienced in person,” said Dr. Adam F. Dalton, who conducts the band. “The yearlong theme is to bring awareness to current and past events as a way to remember the lost and celebrate life.

“Music has a way of cleansing the soul and expressing emotions that can’t be expressed in words,” Dalton said. “These pieces of music will challenge the performers both technically but also emotionally. Audiences will be treated to a variety of styles and approaches to wind band and will feature performances by performers you don’t typically see at a band concert.” The music will be performed by the Marshall Wind Symphony, the top concert band composed of students from the Huntington campus. Members audition each semester for entry.

Concerts are free and performed in Smith Recital Hall. For more information on these and all of the other performances from the School of Music, visit www.marshall.edu/music.

New program offers prescription discounts to low-income Marshall Health and Cabell Huntington Hospital patients

Through its newly created CHHRx program, Marshall Pharmacy, in collaboration with Cabell Huntington Hospital, is offering discounted prescription pricing for patients with low incomes.

The CHHRx program is designed to provide prescription discounts to individuals with incomes below the 200% federal poverty level, including those who:

 are uninsured or underinsured;  are within a Medicare coverage gap;  have a medical hardship or need copay assistance; and/or  require specialty drugs with large copays.

“Medication adherence is critical to patients’ health, particularly those with chronic conditions. This program was created to help remove financial barriers that may be preventing patients from taking their medication as directed,” said Jeffrey A. Fenerty, R.Ph., director of pharmacy services at Marshall Health.

To qualify for the program, an individual must be an established patient at either Marshall Health or Cabell Huntington Hospital. Patients must apply in person at the Marshall Pharmacy located inside the Marshall University Medical Center, 1600 Medical Center Drive, Huntington. Patient discounts are effective immediately upon program approval; however, proof of income must be provided to receive validation status for one year. If proof of income is not provided within seven days, the discount card will expire. Through the program, approved patients pay the discounted cost of the prescription plus a $10 dispensing fee. Marshall University Research Corporation awarded funding for Collegiate Recovery Program

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) has awarded nearly $100,000 in funding to expand the statewide capacity of recovery resources for adults in educational environments through Collegiate Recovery Programs (CRPs).

Marshall University Research Corporation has been selected as one of the five total grant recipients, receiving $20,000 in funding.

“This funding will allow these higher education institutions to provide additional recovery support and resources, ultimately helping students pursue their educational goals with the benefit of a recovery community on campus.” said Susie Mullens, interim director of DHHR’s Office of Drug Control Policy.

CRPs are college or university-provided, supportive environments within the campus culture that reinforce the decision to engage in a lifestyle of recovery from substance use. Marshall University is dedicated to these efforts to build a supportive group around students in recovery, according to Amy Saunders, director of the university’s Wellness Center.

“Collegiate Recovery Programs have been around for over 30 years, but research on these programs has only recently started to be collected. CRPs can boost a student’s academic and social success by providing him or her with the needed supports while they are working toward a college degree,” Saunders said. Dr. Jeffrey Garrett, associate professor of counseling, said the purpose of a CRP is to create supportive communities of recovery for students.

“Our goal is to provide support and safe places for students who are in recovery,” Garrett said.
