Toute petite, elle aime assister aux championnats suisses d'athlétisme dans la salle de la Fin-du-Monde et une discipline l'attire en particulier: le saut à la perche. Mais à ce moment-là, la jeune Nicole s'investit à fond pour la gymnastique rythmique sportive (GRS). Membre de l'équipe nationale, son plus haut fait se déroule en octobre 1999 à l'occasion des championnats du monde qui se tiennent à Osaka. Sélectionnée à l'âge de 16 ans pour le concours multiples par équipe, la Seelandaise et ses camarades de l'équipe suisse terminent à une très belle onzième place sur vingt-six nations. L'année suivante, les Jeux Olympiques de Sydney représentent le but suprême à atteindre, mais elle échoue à s'y qualifier. Les deux saisons suivantes ne lui permettent pas de retrouver la plénitude des moyens qui étaient en sa possession en 1999 et, pire, elle doit soigner une fracture de fatigue au dos. La rigueur avec laquelle elle devait s'entraîner pour la GRS la fait réfléchir et elle décide, à 20 ans, de se tourner vers d'autres sports. Elle joue au volley-ball, mais elle s'essaie également au saut à la perche.
