Other Family Trees – MARRIS of Irby upon

First Generation

1. Edward Marris was born about 1763/1764. He was buried on 18 Feb 1827 in , Lincs.

This is one of a number of MARRIS trees that has not been connected into the main Marris pedigree published on www.marrisfamilyhistory.uk.

Edward married Ann Stephenson on 12 May 1785 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs. Ann was born in 1759/1760. She was buried on 24 Jan 1824 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs.

The Irby marriage registers give Edward's surname as Maros. The marriage entry described Ann as a spinster and that both Edward and Ann were of the Parish of Irby. The wedding witnesses were Wm Trut & John Poot (Pool?). The Irby burial register describes Edward as "of Irby, age 63". The various baptisms of their children at Irby give Edward's occupation as "Labourer" and the surname as Marris.

The NBI V3 shows the burial of Ann Marris at Irby on 24 Jan 1824, aged 64 (i.e. born ca. 1759 / 1760). This is assumed to be the Ann (nee Stephenson) who married Edward Maros.

Edward and Ann had the following children:

+ 2 M i. William Marris was christened on 24 Feb 1786. He was buried on 12 Jan 1863.

2. William Marris (Edward) was christened on 24 Feb 1786 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs. He was buried on 12 Jan 1863 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs.

William married Ann Morvison on 13 Feb 1810 in Irby, Lincs. Ann was born about 1788 in Bradley, Lincs. She was buried on 6 Aug 1865 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs.

The Irby marriage register records the marriage of William to Ann Morvison. The entry says that William was of Irby and Ann of Swallow - both single, (they married by Banns). The marriage was witnessed by William Marris & William Trought.

Note: Who was the William Marris who witnessed this marriage?

The 1841 Census at Irby, Lincs, shows William and family as follows:

William Marris, 55, M, Ag Lab, born in the County Ann Marris, 50, F, born in the County George Marris, 20, M, Ag Lab, born in the County Solomon Marris, 12, born in the County Hannah Marris, 10, F, born in the County.

The NBI V3 shows the likely burial of Ann (nee Morvison):

The 1871 and 1881 Censuses at Irby, Lincs, find George Marris in the household of his brother Solomon Marris and family. See Solomon Marris below for the actual entry.

The 1891 Census at Bigby, Lincs, finds George Marris as a Boarder in the household of Thomas Hodson (Farm Labourer) and family as follows:

Hannah married John Clarke in Dec 1859 in Caistor Reg. Distr, Lincs.

The 1891 Census at Wybers, , Lincs, finds Hannah Clark, nee Marris in the same household as her niece Ann E Marris. One assumes her late husband was John Clarke, with the marriage taking place in December Qtr 1859 in Caistor Registration District. The census entry reads as follows:

Hannah Clark, Head, Widow, 58, Farmer, born Lincs Irby William Plaskitt, Nephew, S, 41, Farm Foreman, born Lincs Irby Ann E Marris, Niece, S, 47, Living on her own means, born Lincs Great

Edward married Elizabeth Selby on 6 May 1824 in Caistor, Lincs. Elizabeth was born about 1801/1802 in , Lincs. She died on 26 Jan 1883. She was buried in Grimsby, Lincs.

We know from the Census that Edward Marris married Elizabeth and that they lived at Caistor. I have assumed that she was Elizabeth Selby who married Edward Marris at Caistor on 6th May 1824. The couple's first two children were baptised at Caistor. The baptism of the third child, Elizabeth, has not been located. Perhaps she may be found in the Caistor PRs.

The 1851 Census at Caistor, Lincs, shows:

Edward Marris, Head, Mar, 57, Ag Labourer, born Lincoln Irby Elizabeth Marris, Wife, Mar, 48, born Lincoln Snitterby Elizabeth Marris, Daur, U, 16, House Serv, born Lincoln Solomon Marris, Nephew, U, 21, Taylor Journeyman, born Lincoln Irby . . . and one Lodger

The 1881 Census at ??? Buildings, ???ow Gate, Great Grimsby, finds ELizabeth Marris as a boarder as follows:

Elizabeth Marris, Boarder, Widow, 75, on the parish, born Lincoln Snitterby.

Although, not conclusive, this looks like the Elizabeth Marris buried at Ainslie Street Burial Ground, Grimsby, Lincs. The entry records her death on 26th January 1883, age 80 years.

Edward and Elizabeth had the following children:

21 F i. Anne Marris was christened on 9 Jun 1825 in Caistor, Lincs.

22 F ii. Jane Marris was christened on 23 Feb 1830 in Caistor, Lincs.

23 F iii. Elizabeth Marris was born in 1834/1835 in Cabourne, Lincs. Elizabeth married Robert Cottam in Dec 1864 in Caistor Reg. Distr, Lincs.

8. George Marris (Edward) was christened on 22 Jul 1798 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs. He died on 1 Oct 1878. He was buried on 4 Oct 1878 in Cemetery, , Lincs.

George married Mary Appleby on 17 May 1820 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs. Mary was born in 1794/1795. She died before 1851.

The 1841 Census at Great Grimsby, Lincs, shows two relevant households, both at River Head:

George Marriss (sic), 42, Foreman Oil Mill, Y Mary Marriss (sic), 47, Y John Marriss (sic), 14, Y George Marriss (sic), 11, Y Thomas Marriss (sic), 6, Y Edward Marriss (sic), 26, Y

Elizabeth Knox, 30, Schoolmistress, y Ann Marris, 20, F.S., y Jane Marris, 17, Dress Maker, y William Marris, 9, y Elizabeth Bower, 11, y

Baptisms have been located for all the above children with the parents named as George and Mary Marris. It is reasonable to assume that they were all from the same family.

Edward Marris (age 26 above) was the son of William Marris & Ann Morvison. He was the above George Marris's nephew.

The 1851 Census at Dial Square, Grimsby, Lincs, shows:

George Marris Snr, Head, Widr, 52, Warehouseman, born Lincolnsh Irby George Marris Jnr, Son, U, 22, Engineer, born Lincolnsh Great Grimsby Thomas Marris, Son, U, 16, born Lincolnsh Grimsby Charlotte Marris, Niece, U, 23, Housekeeper, born Lincolnsh Caistor

Since the above Charlotte Marris was born in Caistor, she was probably the daughter of Edward Marris and Elizabeth Selby - but I have not found a trace of her birth or baptism.

The 1861 Census at Victoria Street West, Grimsby, Lincs, shows:

George Marris, Wid, 62, Born Irby, Lincs, Head, Retired Labourer Charlotte Marris, Un, 33, Born Caistor, Niece, House Keeper

The 1871 Census at Carter Gate, Great Grimsby, Lincs, shows:

William Marris, 29, Ag Lab, Y Maria Marris, 30, Y Mary Marris, 4, Y Ann Marris, 3, Y Ellen Cash, 6, Y

The presence of the child Ellen Cash in the above Census supports the maiden name of William Marris's bride. Perhaps Ellen Cash was her child from a previous marriage.

Another Marris researcher told me that Mary died in 1918 (but I don't know his reference).

Mary married Peter Barton in Dec 1858 in Caistor Reg. Distr., Lincs. Peter was born in 1836 in Broughton, Lincs. He died in 1917 in Broughton, Lincs.

39 F ii. Ann Marris was born about 1839 in Barnoldby-Le-Beck, Lincs.

In 1841, Edward Marris was in the household of his uncle George Marris and family at River Head, Great Grimsby, Lincs. See the 1841 Census for George Marris & Mary Appleby below.

Edward married Elizabeth Triffitt in Jun 1843 in Caistor Reg. Distr, Lincs. Elizabeth was born in 1820 in Grimsby, Lincs. She died on 7 Oct 1856 in Grimsby, Lincs.

The only likely marriage in the GRO indexes is that of Edward Marris to Elizabeth Triffitt in June Qtr 1843 in Caistor Reg. District. Grimsby was in that Reg. District so I have assumed this was the right marriage. One would need to see the marriage certificate to be sure.

Robert Marris, 14, Shoe M. App, Y [i.e. shoemaker apprentice]

Assuming this couple were married before the birth of their first child, and knowing from the Census that the wife was called Louise, she appears to have been Louisa Marshall who married Robert Marris in 1848. This assumption is supported by her son being named Robert Marshall Marris (see below).

Robert married Louisa Marshall in Mar 1848 in Glanford Brigg Reg. Distr., Lincs. Louisa was born in 1826 in , Lincs.

The 1851 Census at South St, Grimsby, Lincs, shows:

FreeBMD shows the marriage of Mary Jane Marris to George Greet in December Qtr 1873. The 1881 Census at Neptune St, Cleethorpes, Lincs, supports the assumption that it was the same Mary Jane Marris as shown here. The entry reads as follows:

19. Solomon Marris (William, Edward) was christened on 6 Apr 1829 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs. He died on 12 Apr 1911 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs.

Solomon married Mary Ann in Jun 1863 in Caistor Reg. Distr, Lincs. Mary was born about 1841 in Thornton le Moor, Lincs. She died on 25 Jan 1905 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs.

FreeBMD shows the marriage of Solomon Marriss (sic) in June Qtr 1863 at Caistor Reg. District. His bride was either Mary Ann Spafford or Mary Ann Taylor.

The 1871 Census at Cottage, Irby, Lincs, shows:

Solomon Marris, Head, Mar, 41, Tailor (Master), born Lincolnshire Irby Mary A Marris, Wife, Mar, 29, born Lincolnshire Thornton Le Moor Elizabeth Marris, Daur, 12, born Lincolnshire Irby Tom Marris, Son, 6, Scholar, born Lincolnshire Irby Ann Marris, Daur, 5, Scholar, born Lincolnshire Irby John W Marris, Son, 3, Scholar, born Lincolnshire Irby George Marris, Lodger, Unm, 54, Ag. It is not clear who the parents of Luke Marris were. One would need his birth certificate or baptism entry to determine this. His death was registered at Grimsby, Lincs, in December Qtr 1965.

The 1891 Census at Irby Village, Lincs [indexed by Ancestry under "Mains"], shows:

Solomon Marris, Head, M, 60, Tailor, Own Accord, born Lincoln Irby Mary Ann Marris, Wife, M, 50, born Thornton Hannah Marris, Daughter, S, 15, born Lincoln Irby James Marris, Son, 14, Agricultural Labourer, born Lincoln Irby Luke Marris, Grandson, S, 11, Agricultural Labourer, born Lincoln Irby Eva Marris, Daughter, S, 8, Scholar, born Lincoln Irby Lilly Marris, Daughter, S, 6, Scholar, born Lincoln Irby Sutton Marris, Grandson, S, 8, Scholar, born Lincoln Irby William H Quibell, Grandson, S, 5, Scholar, born Lincoln Irby

It is not clear who the parents of Sutton Marris were. One would need his birth certificate or baptism entry to determine this. His death was registered at in June Qtr 1949. Circumstantially, his mother was Elizabeth Marris (born 1858/9) who married William Henry Quibell in 1883 (see below). Elizabeth was the only daughter of Solomon & Mary Ann Marris old enough to have been the mother of Sutton Marris.

The 1901 Census shows at Irby Village, Irby, Lincs:

The 1891 Census at High Street, Bromby, Lincs, finds Susannah Marris as a servant in the household of Fanny Clark (Baker), as follows:

The Vital Records Index II from the LDS shows the marriage of Susannah Marris to Fred Hasnip, with Susannah's father's name shown as Solomon.

This may be the James Marris whose MI at St Edmund’s Church, Riby, Lincs, reads:

The index of wills a Somerset House shows:

The 1911 Census at Riby Cross Roads, Lincs, shows James Marris (Head, 34, Farm Labourer, born Riby) and Ellen Marris (Wife, 27, Married, no children, born Limber Lincs).

Unfortunately, the GRO indexes do not show a marriage for James & Ellen.

Circumstantially, James could have been the son of Solomon & Mary Ann Marris except in earlier Censuses his place of birth was given as Irby, not Riby.

More evidence is needed about James & Ellen Marris of Riby Cross Roads.

Lily married George Graves in Sep 1916 in Grimsby Reg. Distr., Lincs.

FreeBMD shows the marriage of Lily Marris in 1916. On the same marriage page were George Graves and John K Needham. Of the two, One assumes Lily Marris married George Graves as both Lily and George Graves were named as executors of the will of Lily's sister Eva Marris (above).

- Annie, beloved wife of William Marris, who died 23rd December 1888, aged 41 years.

109 F ii. Mary Jessie Marris was born in Mar 1879 in Grimsby, Lincs.

This could be the Jesse Marris in the 1901 Census at 8 Victoria St, Newark, Notts, in the household of Mary Whillock(?), as follows:

Mary married William Edward Burton in Jun 1910 in Romford Reg, Distr,. Essex. William was born in 1875/1876 in .

FreeBMD showed the marriage of Mary Jessie Marris in June Qtr 1910. On the same marriage page were William Edward Burton and William Coleman. The former would appear correct because of the 1911 Census at 18 Ashgrove Rd, Goodmayes, Ilford, Essex, which shows:

Jane Burton, Head, 78, Widow, Independant, born Leeds Yorkshire William E Burton, Son, 35, Married (less than 1 year with 1 child living), forwarding clerk, Printers, worker, born London Jessie Burton, Daughter-in-law, 31, Married, assist in House, born Grimsby Lincs

William and Alice had the following children:

111 M iv. Edward Arthur Marris was born on 14 Sep 1893 in Grimsby, Lincs. He died on 28 Jul 1981 in Grimsby, Lincs.

The 1901 Census enumerator appears to have got all three children's names wrong - i.e.:

- William George instead of William Gibson - Arthur Ernest instead of Arthur Edward - Daisy Alice instead of Daisy Alma

Arthur Marri's proper name was Arthur Edward Marris as evidenced by the Probate record of Mary Ann Marris née Lake, widow of John Marris (1826-99) who died 26 March 1902. Her Probate record reads as follows:

Mary Ann Marris (Widow), 74 Wintringham Rd, Grimsby, Lincs. d. 26 Mar 1902. Age 75. £157. To; Arthur Edward Marris (Solicitors Clerk). and Frederick Lake Marris (Chemist).

Her will names her sons, William Henry, George, John Alfred, Arthur Edwin and Frederick Lake Marris, and daughter Emma Jane Jenkinson.

Her own son was Arthur Edwin Marris. The Arthur "Edward" Marris named in the Probate was the 1st cousin twice removed of Mary Ann Marris's husband John Marris.

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 39 Note: It in fact looks as though his original name was Edward Arthur Marris, not Arthur Edward Marris. This is supported by the following records from the GRO indexes:

118 F iii. Gertrude Elizabeth Marris was born in Dec 1882 in Hull, Yorks.

119 M iv. James Edward Marris was born on 24 Oct 1887 in Drypool, Hull, Yorks. He died in Mar 1953 in Hull Reg. Distr., Yorks.

James married Elizabeth Ann Hall on 24 Feb 1911 in Sculcoates Register Office, Yorks. Elizabeth was born on 22 Jan 1889 in St Mary, Kingston upon Hull, Yorks. She died in Jun 1983 in Hull Reg. Distr., Yorks.

The 1911 Census at 327 Holderness Rd, Hull, E. Yorks, in the household of Hannah Mary Latus (Fish Merchant) as follows:

James Edward Marris, Servant, 23, Married, Fish Fryer, born Yorkshire Hull Elizabeth Ann Marris, Servant, 22, Married for under 1 year, General Servant (Domestic), born Yorkshire Hull

120 M v. George Marris was born in Mar 1892 in Hull, Yorks.

50. Ellizabeth Marris (Solomon, William, Edward) was born in 1858/1859 in Irby, Lincs.

Ellizabeth married William Henry Quibell in Dec 1883 in Sheffield Reg. Distr., Yorks.

Elizabeth Marris appeared with her parents in the 1871 Census (above) but was born four or five years before the marriage of her parents (Solomon & Mary Ann). Was she perhaps a daughter from Mary Ann's previous marriage? If so, then her mother was probably Mary Ann Taylor rather than Mary

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 44 Ann Spafford. That is because of the 1861 Census at Irby upon Humber, Lincs, which shows a Taylor household including a grand-daughter named Elizabeth Taylor, age 2, born Irby upon Humber.

The marriage of Elizabeth Marris to William Henry Quibell is circumstantial. It is based on the presence of William H Quibell, Grandson, agd 5 in the household of Elizabeth's parents, Solomon & Mary Ann (above) in 1891. As mentioned above, the 1891 Census at Irby Village, Lincs included two grandsons in the household of Solomon & Mary Ann Marris. The entries were:

Sutton Marris, Grandson, S, 8, Scholar, born Lincoln Irby William H Quibell, Grandson, S, 5, Scholar, born Lincoln Irby

Only Elizabeth Marris (born 1858/59) was old enough to have been their mother. She didn't marry William Henry Quibell until 1883 which means Sutton Marris was born illegitimately. I have assumed that William Henry Quibell was the father of Sutton Marris but one would need Sutton's birth certificate to be sure.

William and Ellizabeth had the following children:

121 M i. Sutton Marris was born on 25 Jul 1882 in Irby, Lincs. He died on 1 Jun 1949 in Manorial Hospital, Scunthorpe, Lincs. He was buried on 4 Jun 1949 in St Peter & St Paul, Healing, Lincs.

Sutton married Rose Annie Welton in Jun 1904 in Caistor Reg. Distr, Lincs. Rose was born in 1882/1883. She died on 23 Feb 1958 in Moor Farm Cottages, , Lincs. She was buried on 27 Feb 1958 in St Peter & St Paul, Healing, Lincs.

The 1911 Census at Station Road, Healing, Nr Grimsby, Lincs, shows:

51. Tom Marris (Solomon, William, Edward) was born in Jun 1864 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs. He died on 14 Apr 1942 in Grimsby Reg. Distr., Lincs.

Tom married Mary Anne Scott on 3 Jun 1894 in Great Grimsby, Lincs. Mary was born in 1870/1871 in , Lincs. She died on 17 Sep 1964 in Grimsby Reg. Distr., Lincs.

The 1891 Census at New Road Farm, Irby, Lincs, finds Tom Marris and his brother Edward Marris both Farm Servants in the household of John Hewson (Farm Foreman), his wife Mary Hewson and family:

Thomas Marris, Boarder, S, 27, Farm Servant, born Lincoln Irby Edward Marris, Boarder, S, 18, Farm Servant, born Lincoln Irby

Mary Ann Marris (Widow) of 19 Crescent Street, Grimsby, Lincs. d. 17 Sep 1964. £783. To; Hilda Tacey (wife of John Edward Tacey) & Harold Marris (Railway Porter).

Tom and Mary had the following children:

123 F i. Lily Marris was born in Mar 1895 in Grimsby, Lincs. She died in Jun 1902 in Grimsby Reg. Distr., Lincs.

The GRO indexes show the death of Lily Marris, age 7 in June Qtr 1902 at Grimsby. One assumes it was this Lily Marris.

124 M ii. Elijah Marris was born in Dec 1896 in Grimsby, Lincs. He died on 11 Aug 1915.

Elijah Marriss appears on a War memorial 1914-1918 at Grimsby Baptist Tabernacle, Victoria Street, Grimsby since moved to Grimsby Baptist Church, Laceby Road.). This is probably the above Elijah Marris although, initially, I was unable to locate any record of his death on the Commonwealth War Graves web site.

In fact, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission appears to have him as William Marris. The entry for his death reads:

Marris William, Corporal, died 11/08/1915, 18 Lincolnshire Regiment U. K., Son of Tom and Mary A. Marris, of 32, Earl St., Grimsby.

He was buried at Helles in Turkey, so probably died at Gallipoli.

125 M iii. Harold Marris was born on 27 Dec 1898 in Grimsby, Lincs. He died in Dec 1986 in Grimsby, Lincs.

The GRO indexes record the death of Harold Marris in 1986 at Grimsby Reg. District, giving his date of birth as 27 Dec 1898.

126 F iv. Hilda Marris was born in Dec 1902 in Grimsby, Lincs.

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 47 Hilda married John Edward Tacey in Sep 1925 in Grimsby Reg. Distr., Lincs.

This couple were executors of Hilda's mother's will.

127 M v. John Solomon Marris was born on 19 Feb 1904 in Grimsby, Lincs. He died in Jun 1981 in Grimsby, Lincs.

John married Louisa Chapman in Sep 1928 in Grimsby, Reg. Distr., Lincs. Louisa was born on 5 Jun 1907. She died on 16 May 1989 in Grimsby Reg. Distr., Lincs.

The GRO indexes record the marriage of John S Marris to Louisa Chapman at Grimsby. One assumes he was John Solomon Marris although one would need to see the marriage certificate to be sure.

The GRO indexes record the death of John Solomon Marris in June Qtr 1981 at Grimsby Reg. District, giving his date of birth as 19 Feb 1904.

The index of wills at Somerset House shows:

Louisa Marris of 52 Fairfax Ave, Grimsby, Lincs. d. 16 May 1989. d/b 05 Jun 1907 £70,000.

One assumes this was the same Louisa Marris but one would need to see her Death Certificate to be sure.

128 F vi. Gladys Mary Marris was born in Dec 1907 in Grimsby, Lincs.

129 M vii. George Marris was born in Jun 1912 in Grimsby Reg. Dist.,Lincs. He died on 8 Nov 1954 in Grimsby, Lincs.

FreeBMD showed the birth of George Marris with mother's maiden name of Scott. As the birth was registered at Grimsby, I have assumed he was of this family.

George married Olive M Green in Dec 1933 in Grimsby Reg. Dist.,Lincs.

George Marris of 22 Malcom Road, Grimsby, Lincs. d. 08 Nov 1954 at Grimsby & District Hospital, Grimsby. £3,019. Admon. To; Olive May Marris (Widow).

53. John William Marris (Solomon, William, Edward) was born in Sep 1867 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs. He died in Mar 1942 in Cleethorpes Reg. Distr., Lincs.

John married (1) Annie Maria Laughton on 18 May 1891 in , Lincs. Annie was born in 1870/1871 in Binbrook, Lincs. She died in Jun 1931 in Grimsby Reg. Dist.,Lincs.

The Vital Records Index II from the LDS shows the marriage of John William Marris to Annie Maria Laughton, with John William's father's name shown as Solomon.

The 1891 Census at Rantus(?) Lane, Binbrook, Lincs, shows:

George Laughton, Head, M, 57, Agiricultural Labourer, born Lincolnshire Kirkby Mary J Laughton, Wife, m, 55, born Lincolnshire Holton Le Clay Annie M Laughton, Daur, S, 20, born Lincolnshire Binbrook Arthur E Laughton, Grandson, 2, born Lincolnshire Binbrook John W Marris, Visitor, S, 23, born Lincolnshire Irby

The GRO index of deaths shows the death of Ann M Marris, age 61, in June Qtr 1931 at Grimsby Reg. District. One assumes that the was the death of Annie Maria Marris.

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 49 John and Annie had the following children:

130 M i. Tom Marris was born in Mar 1892 in Irby, Lincs.

The index of wills at Somerset House shows:

Tom Marris of Willowdene Barmouth Drive, Grimsby, Lincs. d. 07 Dec 1986. born 03 Feb 1892 £40,000.

One assumes from the above year of birth that this was the same Tom Marris.

131 M ii. Charles Laughton Marris was born in Jun 1900 in Grimsby Reg. District. He was buried on 13 Jun 1900 in Stallingborough, Lincs.

Stallingborough Burial Register says he was of Maux Hall, Stallingborough, age 3 months when buried.

132 F iii. Lena Beatrice Marris was born in Jun 1902 in Grimsby Reg. District. She was buried on 20 May 1902 in Stallingborough, Lincs.

Stallingborough Burial Register says she was of Maux Hall, Stallingborough, age 3 months when buried.

133 F iv. Florence Annie Marris was born in Mar 1906 in Stallingborough, Lincs.

John married (2) Gertrude E Goodhand in Sep 1934 in Grimsby Reg. Dist.,Lincs. Gertrude was born in 1869/1870. She died in Jun 1957 in Cleethorpes Reg. Distr., Lincs.

FreeBMD shows the marriage of John W Marris to Gerrude E Goodhand in September Qtr 1934 at Grimsby Reg. District. I am assuming that this was the John William Marris shown here who was previously married to Annie Maria Laughton. One would need to see the marriage certificate to be sure.

If this second marriage was the case, then this also leads to the will of John William Marris. The index of wills at Somerset House shows:

John William Marris of Station Road, Healing, Lincs. d. 05 Feb 1942. £261. To; Gertrude Emily Marris (Widow) & Jack Curtis (Solicitors Clerk).

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 50 The GRO index of deaths shows the death of John W Marris registered at Cleethorpes in March Qtr 1942. One assumes this was the above John William Marris but, again, one would need to check the Death Certificate to be sure.

55. Edward Marris (Solomon, William, Edward) was born in Jun 1873 in Irby upon Humber, Lincs. He died on 30 May 1951 in Scunthorpe Reg. Distr., Lincs.

The 1891 Census at New Road Farm, Irby, Lincs, finds Tom Marris and his brother Edward Marris both Farm Servants in the household of John Hewson (Farm Foreman), his wife Mary Hewson and family:

Thomas Marris, Boarder, S, 27, Farm Servant, born Lincoln Irby Edward Marris, Boarder, S, 18, Farm Servant, born Lincoln Irby

Edward married (1) Sarah Ann Wilkin in Mar 1895 in Caistor Reg. Distr, Lincs. Sarah was born in 1873/1874 in , Lincs. She died in Dec 1924 in Glanford Brigg Reg. Distr., Lincs.

The 1901 Census at Stallingborough, Lincs, shows:

Edward Marris, Head, M, 27, Farm Foreman, born Linc Irby Sarah Ann Marris, Wife, M, 27, born Linc Kirmington Percy Marris, Son, 5, born Linc Riby

The 1911 Census at Keelby Grange, , Lincs, shows:

Edward Marris, Head, 37, Married, Farm Foreman, born Irby on Humber Lincolnshire Sarah Ann Marris, Wife, 37, Married 16 years, 3 children, 2 still living, born Kirmington Lincolnshire Edmund Marris, Son, 7, born Riby Lincolnshire Cyril Marris, Son, 6, born Riby Lincolnshire . . . and 3 Boarders

There is clear evidence (see below) that Edward Marris married secondly Lily Drury in in 1928. Unless his first marriage ended in divorce, one is therefore looking for the death of Sarah Ann Marris (nee Wilkin) prior to 1928. The GRO death index shows the likely entry, the death of Sarah Ann Marris age 51 in December Qtr 1924.

Edward and Sarah had the following children:

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 51 134 M i. Percy Marris was born in Sep 1895 in Caistor Reg. Distr, Lincs. He was christened on 4 Aug 1895 in Swallow, Lincs. He died on 9 Feb 1903 in Caistor Reg. Distr, Lincs. He was buried in Holy Trinity, Swallow, Lincs.

Percy Marris was the son who was already dead by the time of the 1911 Census (above).

An MI at Holy Trinity, Swallow, Lincs, shows:

Percy, son of E. & S.A.Marris, died 9th February 1903, age 7 years & 7 months.

135 M ii. Edmund Marris was born in Jun 1903 in Riby, Lincs. He was christened on 2 Aug 1903 in Swallow, Lincs. He died on 28 Feb 1967. He was buried in Broughton Cemetery, Broughton, Lincs.

Edmund married Kitty Andrew in Sep 1927 in Grimsby Reg. Distr., Lincs. Kitty was born on 2 Nov 1902. She died on 10 May 1987. She was buried in Broughton Cemetery, Broughton, Lincs.

The GRO indexes show only a single Edmund Marris with no middle initial. ONe assumes therefore that this is the Edmund Marris who married Kitty Andrew in 1927.

An MI at Broughton Cemetery, Broughton, Lincs, shows the burial of the couple, as follows:

Edmund Marris, died 28 Feb 1967, age 63. Kitty Marris, died 10 May 1987, age 84.

136 M iii. Cyril Marris was born in Mar 1905 in Riby, Lincs.

An MI at Scartho Road Cemetery, Grimsby, Lincss, reads:

Gilbert, son of Wm H and Mary J Marris (no date).

Although the above MI has no date, the GRO indexes help identify him.

The birth of Gilbert Marris occurred in December Qtr 1882 at Caistor Reg. District. The death of Gilbert Marris occurred in March Qtr 1890 at Caistor Reg. District.

139 M iii. Stanley Marris was born in Dec 1883 in Grimsby, Lincs.

The Rev. George Marris, the oldest minister in the Methodist Ministry, died at his home in London yesterday at the age of 98. He was born at Hull in 1854 and was trained for the Methodist Church at Richmond College, entering the ministry in 1878. A year later he went to China and did excellent missionary work there. His Chinese translations are still used. After four years' service his health broke down and he had to return to England. For the remainder of his ministry he served in town circuits, being much sought after as a good and eloquent preacher.

As an official of the Methodist Conference he was quite outstanding. He was known as a very wise counsellor in conference committees, and the genial courteous old man was very popular. He acted

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 56 as Convenor of Scrutineers at the Methodist Conference from 1905 to 1908. The confidence the Methodist Church had in him was evident when he was sent as her representative to the Oecumenical [sic] Conference held in Toronto in 1911. Of his three sons, two entered the ministry – the Rev. G. Stainton Marris, who reached the age of superannuation as well as his father, and the Rev. C. Cathay Marris.
