“DIPPING” IN THE POOLE

Poole Town, as they are now, were formed in 1890 through a merger of Poole Hornets and Poole Rovers and played in the Dorset League, the League and, after the First World War, the Western League. The Club moved to the Stadium in Poole in 1934 and changed their name to Poole Town. What happened when football resumed after the war is unclear but records show that the Club played in the Western League from 1930/31 until 1956/57 with an unexplained break in 1934/35. It is interesting to note that in that “initial” season in 1930/31 they played in Division Two of the Western League, finishing ninth behind the Champions, Portland United. In 1957/58 they moved up in to the Southern League, playing primarily in the Premier Division until a disastrous season in the Southern Division in 1995/96 – they secured only one point from forty games and conceded 188 goals -saw them move back to the Hampshire League. The one point gained was a game at the County Ground against Bashley. They had been forced to leave the Stadium a couple of years earlier – when the Greyhound Track was widened leaving insufficient room for Football - and ground grading problems meant that they could not play at a higher level than the Hampshire League. Between 1994 and 2000 they led a somewhat nomadic existence, playing at Hamworthy United, Holt United and Haskells Recreation Ground (off Road in Newtown) before moving to their present base at Tatnam in 2000. Having improved the ground to meet the necessary Ground Grading criteria they joined the Wessex League in 2004/05 where they stayed for seven seasons. Their overall League Record over those seasons makes impressive reading:-

PL W D L F A Pts 292 212 36 44 819 283 672

They were League Champions in each of the final three seasons and were League Cup Runners Up in 2010 whilst the number of goals scored averages out at over one hundred per season. Record Wessex win; Home: 10-0 v Horndean, 21 April 2009 - Away: 7-0 v Hayling United, 28 March 2009 and defeat; Home: 1-5 v Wimborne Town, 23 April 2009 - Away: 0-4 v City, 10 September 2005 From the Wessex League they moved to the Southern League and it has largely been progress both on and off the field ever since having at one stage reached the , and today they are only one step below that level. They have enjoyed something of a monopoly as regards the Dorset Senior Cup and especially appearances in the Final having won the trophy sixteen times and been runners on a further nineteen occasions. Their name will also always be associated nowadays with Charlie Austin who scored 48 goals for the Club in 42 appearances before moving in to the professional ranks with Swindon, Burnley, QPR and and continuing to score goals. It is perhaps ironic that having been deemed surplus to requirements at St. Marys at the end of last season he is regularly scoring goals at West Bromwich Albion – which is more than can be said at present of Saints as a team! But back to Poole Town. They enjoyed their spell in the Wessex League – the League can surely say they helped them get back on their feet – and they are to be congratulated on what they have achieved since moving up the footballing ladder.

CLUB NEWS

AFC Stoneham are delighted to announce that they’ll officially move to their new stadium in Stoneham Lane next week, with the first game there currently scheduled to be the tie against . This also seems to be an opportune moment to remind everyone that it will be a requirements of Hampshire county FA to register for access. In order to do so, please visit the County website - http://www.hampshirefa.com/news/2019/jun/18/register-to-use-stoneham-lane-football-complex Here is a reminder about the story- Hampshire FA have been appointed as operators of the £9 million Stoneham Lane Football Complex facility. They are part of the Parklife Project which is an FA initiative to ensure the income generated at the football clubs is put back into funding grassroots football within the local area. In order to enter the facility, ALL users will need to register beforehand. The FA and Sport require the data generated from registrations and the reception turnstiles to analyse trends and participation. Furthermore registration is compulsory to meet their safeguarding requirements amongst other things. Each registration will be sent a unique QR code that will give them access via the turnstile. Registration is simple and it should take no longer than 2 minutes. Please visit the website (link above). All enquiries can be sent to [email protected]. Andover New Street are pleased to announce the appointment of John Ward and Chris White as Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively. John has had a long association with New Street over many years and his knowledge and drive, allied to Chris’s experience, will help to take the Club forward both on and off the field. The Club would like to thank Glen Butterfield and Paul Reidy for their help in respect of the position this season and all at welcome John and Chris in their new roles. It seems I was a bit premature in reporting that River Smith had moved to Hamworthy United from Shaftesbury. Apologies to all parties involved. We do note however that Zak Pickett has moved from Romsey to Amesbury over the Christmas break, and that striker Justin Bennett- with 24 league goals for Bemerton; has signed dual registration forms for Blackfield & Langley.

FIXTURES UPDATE

The game between East Cowes Vics and Newport that was postponed on Boxing Day will go back in on Tuesday January 21st (with a KO of19.45). The more eagle-eyed amongst you will have seen that the is now not going to be closed on the weekend of January 11th. The only alteration to the published fixture list that is going to be make is to change Bemerton's opponents from Laverstock & Ford to East Cowes Vics. The revised date for the Bemerton/Laverstock game will become Saturday February 8th. The motorway closure now involves Saturday February 1st. As luck would have it, the fixture list for that date is kind in terms of travelling across Southampton so do not expect wholesale changes. There are a couple of fixtures in the Premier Division that will be problematic. The revised fixture list is as follows and of course will be subject to alteration at little or no notice.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Roger Allen writes NEW MILTON TOWN 1-1 RINGWOOD TOWN DESPITE a heavy pitch and neither side showing a particularly high skill level, this was an entertaining local derby with a draw being a fair result. The first chance came on 5 minutes when a shot from distance by Milton's Aaron Scott just cleared the bar. Typical of the game the action transferred straight to the other end and Ben Harris fired over. The best chance of the early part of the game came shortly after, when a slip by a New Milton defender allowed Harris to feed Jack Hannam but his powerful shot was parried to safety by New Milton's keeper, Luke Dennison. On the half hour Dennison had a scare as a shot by Hannam squirmed from his grasp but he recovered quickly to save the ball before it crossed the line. However his next action was more assured as he produced a good save to deny Jo Manley. Shortly after, at the other end, Scott dragged a hot wide. The game moved into stoppage time and Ringwood picked a good time to take the lead. A shot by Harris was parried by Dennison but Ryan HAMM followed up to bundle the ball over the line despite the efforts of a couple of defenders to block his effort. HT 0-1 Pictured left- Ground Grading Officer Ian Harley presents New Milton Manager Nigel Green with the MJM Sports Kappa Respect November award for Division One. Ringwood probably shaded the first half but the second half was more even but no less enjoyable. In the early stages Harris shot just wide for Ringwood then Harrison Clarke was brought down just outside the penalty area after exchanging passes with Harris. However the subsequent free kick came to nothing. On 63 minutes New Milton got the equaliser. Joe PETTY was released by a through ball and, after taking it round keeper Nick Harvey, he finished for a well taken goal. Shortly after New Milton came close to gaining the lead from a corner. Dean Robertson's attempted shot was deflected over.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 26

There was one final scare for the home side as a Hamm shot from 20 yards took a huge deflection off a New Milton defender and just looped over the bar. So honours even and an identical score for the second fixture between these clubs and there was nothing to suggest that they will not be as close come the end of the season. FT 1-1

Roger Allen writes HYTHE & DIBDEN 1-0 FAWLEY AT the outset of this report let me say how good it was to see the Chairman, Ian Hoare, in the crowd for this keenly contested local Waterside derby. The game was very hard fought and close with Fawley probably shading possession but Hythe having the bulk of the chances particularly in the second half. It took nearly 20 minutes for either side to create a clear chance when Fawley striker, Mark Lilley, fired into the Hythe net only to be denied by an offside flag. Shortly after Hythe's Mig Dark had a shot that was deflected over but on the half hour the goal arrived that was ultimately to prove the winner. Fawley's defence got into an awful tangle in the middle of their half and DARK was able to pick up the loose ball and chip advancing goalkeeper Jamie Bruce from just inside the penalty area. Bruce got a hand to the shot but was unable to stop the ball going into goal. Rich Bridle had a chance for Hythe shortly after which cleared the bar and Charlie Crane for Hythe had the ball in the net but his effort was disallowed because the ball had gone out of play in the build-up. HT 1-0 Immediately on the restart Dark had a shot which was deflected wide but the game's first controversial incident happened shortly after in the other penalty area when Fawley had a concerted shout for a penalty turned down by the referee. Hythe then had a succession of chances that they spurned with Zac Willis, Bengyela Ngwa, Liam Goulding and Crane all firing wide - the latter guilty of a bad miss in front of an open goal. During this period Fawley had another shout for a penalty rejected by the referee. Still the home team weren't finished with missing chances. Sam Floyd headed just wide then the Fawley keeper Bruce mishit a clearance to Filippos Terzidis. With the keeper badly out of position Terzidis advanced to the edge of the penalty area but, by taking one touch too many, he had allowed a defender to get back onto the line to block his shot. FT 1-0

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 26

WEEK TWENTY TWO ROUND UP

t last a week when we had virtually all matches played – just two postponements and an unfortunate abandonment – and thanks to all who ensured their pitches were playable after the rain of the past A week. The matches “lost” were the Premier Division clash between Fareham and Baffins Milton Rovers and Andover New Street’s visit to Romsey in Division One whilst AFC Stoneham against Bashley was abandoned at the break because of floodlight failure with the visitors a goal ahead. Leaders Alresford, after a couple of difficult fixtures on the road, returned to winning ways in yet another potentially difficult clash when a single goal from Craig Harding, very much their main man as regards goals at present, gave them all three points at AFC Portchester. Christchurch maintained their unbeaten home record with a 3-1 win over Hamble Club – a penalty for each side converted by Brad Cherrett and Nathan Lynch respectively among the goals – but Portland, not for the first time of late, slipped up at home. Visitors Hamworthy United were three goals up at the break – two from Eddie Hodge – and though the home side pulled two back in the second half it was not enough as the Hammers maintain their progress under Tim Sills. Lymington continue to push themselves closer to the leading group and a best of five goal win over Cowes Sports gave them three more points. Three different scorers for the home side and Jared Wetherick back in the Cowes ranks with a goal after a long break. Fleet Town and Horndean shared two goals and the points at Calthorpe Park but Brockenhurst’s poor run of results continued with a 3-2 home defeat by Bournemouth, their fourth consecutive loss on home soil. Mal Thomas notched a hat trick in an important win for the visitors. Solent University bounced back from last week’s heavy defeat with a 2-1 win at Tadley Calleva, Ethan Taylor scoring the winner as they came from a goal down, but still no joy for Amesbury as they went down 5-3 at Shaftesbury, the first time the home side have scored five this season with River Smith scoring two and seemingly dispelling suggestions that he had returned to Hamworthy. At the end of the day Alresford’s lead is back at six points with the same number of points covering the next six Clubs. In Division One the leadership for once remained unchanged with US Portsmouth retaining top spot after an impressive 3-1 win at Petersfield, the home Club’s first League defeat in ten matches. Alton are a point behind after a 2-1 home win over Verwood, two goals from Stuart Green making it seven wins in a row, with Lee Vint the Verwood marksman. A lone goal from Mig Dark gave Hythe & Dibden the points in the Waterside derby with Fawley, with the visitors going down again to the narrowest of defeats, almost a story of their season. Bemerton Heath, who appear to have now lost Justin Bennett as well as George Hallahan – a severe dent in their strike-power – went down to a single goal at Andover Town as Josh Bertie maintained his recent goal scoring run and the largest crowd of the day, saw a highly entertaining game at Laverstock with the home side defeating Downton by four goals to two. Chae Sykes scored twice for the home side and Tom Moseley claimed both the visiting goals. Whitchurch ended a run of four defeats with a two goal win at Totton & Eling and finally on Saturday a first home win of the season for East Cowes Vics with Jimmi Burton scoring the only goal of the game against Follands. Earlier in the week the Boxing Day meeting between Vics and Newport fell victim to the weather and on Friday evening New Milton and Ringwood took a point apiece from a one all draw. Reverting to the subject of attendances it was a remarkably good day for same and there were five above one hundred in the Premier Division – topped by 180 at Portchester – and five in Division One where both Alton and Petersfield exceeded the 150 mark and Laverstock and Downton battled it out in front of 201 spectators, it is surely financially viable to play at Holiday times? Apologies, but no space for Neighbourhood Watch or the Attendance statistics this week.

Happy NEW YEAR one and all
