PRESENTATION OF GRADUATES Virtual Graduation Celebration June 2, 2020

Commencement and Hooding Ceremony 3 WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT M. ROY WILSON, M.D. Dear Graduate,

Congratulations, doctors! Graduating from the Wayne State University School of Medicine is an exceptional achievement, so take time to recognize all the hard work and perseverance it took to get to this point. This year’s graduation celebration looks different than it has in other years, but your accomplishments are in no way diminished because of it.

As you reach this milestone, I’m confident your time at the Wayne State School of Medicine has prepared you to reach many more. Because of your time here, you now have an opportunity to have a meaningful, fulfilling impact on people’s lives and on society at large that few people can even dream of. You’ve shown, through your flexibility and grace during unprecedented challenges, that you are well equipped to thrive as physicians in an unpredictable world. You’ll certainly benefit from your many hours of study and clinical practice, and from the opportunities you’ve had to engage with the world outside the classroom from our campus in Detroit. This gives you a distinct advantage.

Yet, the richest reward of your time here in medical school may be the wisdom and humanistic outlook you’ve gained, which have made you a compassionate and thoughtful physician, committed to making a difference in your community.

The Wayne State University School of Medicine has asked a lot from you, not the least of which was to be the best healer you could be. Today, we ask for one more thing: Stay engaged with the university, and help a new generation access the transformative opportunities you have had here.

We trust that your experience here has kindled a lifelong passion for learning and healing. So instead of goodbye, I’ll say, “Until we meet again.” Best wishes to you and to the entire Class of 2020.

M. Roy Wilson President

1 Wayne State University School of Medicine WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE Dean Mark Schweitzer, M.D.

To the Class of 2020:

Congratulations, doctors.

You are the next generation of a living legacy founded 152 years ago. You should be proud to now be a continuum of that legacy. I have no doubt you will do us proud and further burnish the respected reputation of the Wayne State University School of Medicine.

You have not only been tested by education, but by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the years to come, I believe you will find that this time made you better physicians. This experience has proved your mettle, and for this you should be justifiably proud. Your many efforts to confront the virus and care for the community have been inspirational and emblematic of the WSU tradition.

Our School of Medicine is built upon a solid foundation of education and service to the community. You are now the next layer in that foundation. I am certain that you will enhance this reputation as you develop your own brilliant futures.

As you embark upon your residencies and launch your careers, I ask that you stay safe, maintain your sense of patient-centric caring and that you keep in touch with your School of Medicine so that I and the faculty may celebrate your many successes.

Mark E. Schweitzer, M.D. Vice President, Health Affairs Dean, Wayne State University School of Medicine

Commencement and Hooding Ceremony 2 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Jack D. Sobel, M.D.

To the Class of 2020:

The Class of 2020 of the Wayne State University School of Medicine is, indeed, a very special class.

You are graduating in the midst of the SARS-CO2 virus surge, which has had a devastating effect on the residents of the Detroit area. As collateral damage, it impacted your personal education. COVID-19 affected nearly every stage of the medical education process, from MCAT to residency. These circumstances will make you better physicians, because your experience will have been forged in the furnace of front-line medicine. As you prepare to enter your residencies, you go with my utmost confidence in your success. I, too, am leaving after completing five and one-half years as your dean. The richest part of my experience has been the personal interaction with the exceptional, dedicated, loyal faculty, staff and students we have in our School of Medicine. We have so many talented scientists and respected and skilled teachers, as well as clinicians, who have performed so tirelessly during the COVID-19 epidemic.

As I complete my term as dean, my parting thoughts are dedicated to the lifeblood of our School of Medicine — our medical students. Throughout the ups and downs of the last few decades, the school has been sustained by our richest jewels, our wonderful students. You students are special and choose Wayne State University even when accepted by other schools. You recognize that WSU offers superior clinical training that is only possible because of our unique and special relationship with the diverse communities of Detroit and the dedication and expertise of the teaching staff.

Congratulations, doctors.

13 Wayne State University School of Medicine OATH OF COMMITMENT

I do solemnly swear by all that I hold most sacred that according to my ability and judgment I will in every particular keep this, my oath and covenant:

I pledge to dedicate myself to the service of humanity and to honor the noble traditions of the medical profession. To hold them who have taught me this art as equal to my parents and to live my life in partnership with them. To give to my teachers the respect and gratitude which is their due; to regard my colleagues equally with my brethren; and to teach this art by precept, by lecture, and by every other mode of instruction to those who practice the healing arts.

As a physician, I will maintain the ultimate dignity of life while guiding its arrival, protecting its course, and easing its natural passage from this world. I will offer to those who seek my aid not only my knowledge and skills, but my warmth and compassion as well. Whatever in the lives of those I shall see or hear, either in my practice or outside of my practice, which should not be made public, this will I hold in silence, believing that such things should not be spoken.

I will conduct myself with honesty and virtue; with conscience and dignity will I live my life and practice my art. In all circumstances, I will consider every individual as equal without regard to race, creed or gender, refusing no one my help. I will abstain from every act of injustice and corruption. Above all else, I will do no harm (Primum Non Nocere).

I freely take this oath and will maintain the noble traditions of my profession, always tempering my with the warmth and humility of the true physician.

INVESTITURE OF DOCTORAL HOODS

One of the most colorful features of an academic regalia procession is the appearance of the graduates, faculty, cabinet and Board of Governors in full academic regalia. These caps, and hoods have long histories, and their patterns and colors have special significance.

The recalls the time when all students in centers of higher learning were members of the clergy and therefore wore garments the church considered proper.

The Oxford or “mortarboard” cap worn today is thought to be a combination of the close-fitting cap worn indoors by scholars of the Middle Ages and the soft square worn outdoors. The tuft on the early cap has been replaced by a colored tassel that signifies the college granting the degree.

In modern , the distinctive mark of a degree is a , which in its earliest form was simply an article of clothing. Since the churches and lecture halls of European universities were cold, drafty places, scholars wore hoods as head coverings, attached to a cape or worn separately.

American universities, unlike those of England and Europe, have adopted a standard code of academic regalia. The design of the gown, the color of the tassel and the pattern, length and colors of the hood all have special meaning.

Each graduate wears a gown appropriate to the degree granted. The doctor’s gown is faced with velvet and has bell-shaped sleeves. Each sleeve carries three bars of velvet, or chevrons.

The most colorful part of the costume is the hood. The color of the velvet trim indicates the department in which the degree was granted; the width corresponds to the level of the degree. At this ceremony, candidates for medical doctoral degrees wear hoods with green velvet running along a black background, representing the academic color of medicine and the yellow and green silk representing Wayne State University.

The appearance of a name, recognition for academic achievement, and department and/or university honors on the following lists is presumptive, but not conclusive of graduation. Participation in the commencement ceremony does not constitute graduation. Academic records will show the graduation date and recognition for academic achievement when degrees have been certified. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this program’s content. Any omissions or errors are unintentional.

Commencement and Hooding Ceremony 30 Congratulations, graduates!

It is an honor to celebrate your commencement, and we are proud to welcome you to the School of Medicine alumni family. After countless hours of studying, shadowing and serving our community, you have officially earned the title of Warrior M.D.

The Wayne State University physicians who have gone before you, and whose ranks you now join, have had the privilege of helping you pursue your passions. You have embraced the necessary commitments to both the art and science of medicine, and to creating change through your work. We look forward to learning of your many accomplishments in the years ahead.

As graduates of the School of Medicine, it is now your turn to be there for the next generation of students — providing counsel, support and guidance as they progress through their medical education.

On behalf of our more than 23,000 alumni across the country and around the world, we wish you much success, we welcome you as our colleagues, and we celebrate the start of our enduring relationship as alumni and friends.
