He attended Bellemoor School. • His earliest exposure to recording came when he worked on a b- side to British R&B group Damage's cover of the Eric Clapton song "Wonderful Tonight". He then started doing vocals for a few tracks with garage act Artful Dodger, of which the song "Rewind", released off the Artful Dodger album It's All About the Stragglers, hit #2 on the UK charts in 2000, thus paving the way for a solo career. His first single, "Fill Me In", made him the youngest solo male artist ever to reach #1 in the UK (he was 19 at the time). This was the first of a string of four Top 10 singles from his debut album, Born To Do It, which was released the same year and also hit #1, going on to sell 1.8 million copies. • The success of his debut, which was written almost entirely by David himself and Mark Hill of The Artful Dodger, led to the U.S. release of "Fill Me In" in May 2001. It proved a success, reaching #15 on the Billboard Hot 100. Born to Do It was released in the U.S. on July 17, 2001, peaking at #11 on the Billboard 200 and sold over one million copies.

  • Canadian Women Djs Sound Off Maren Jane
STEREO/TYPES: CANADIAN WOMEN DJS SOUND OFF MAREN JANE HANCOCK A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GENDER, FEMINIST AND WOMEN’S STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMEMBER 2020 © MAREN JANE HANCOCK, 2020 ABSTRACT There has been a significant increase in the number of women DJs since the turn of the twenty- first century due to advances in technology resulting in increased access to cheap or free digital music and software, inexpensive and user-friendly hardware (such as controllers), and the networking and promotional opportunities afforded by the Internet. Moreover, emergent local, regional, national, and international initiatives to advance women in DJ culture are converging with established underground networks and actions, resulting in the increased visibility and influence of BIPOC and womxn DJs and producers, who continue to organize collective resistance to misogyny, sexism, racism, and heteronormativity within DJ culture–both generally, and specific to Canada. This multi-dimensional study–conducted from the insider perspective of a professional DJ–explores the ways in which Canadian women DJs’ positionality in DJ culture is impacted by the social construction of gender, race, and sexuality. Particular attention is paid to the effects of homosociality and heteronormativity on women’s engagement with DJ technologies, and how we resist these forces by forming networks to establish our own physical and digital spaces in Canadian DJ culture. Although women’s access to DJ culture and our representation within the culture in terms of media portrayal, diversity, and sheer numbers has improved, the underground and activist scenes propelling these institutional changes are increasingly vulnerable to commercial cooptation that threatens to dilute any revolutionary potential.

  • Billboard, Het Oudste Muziekweekblad Ter Wereld\
De ondertitel van het eerste nummer was: A monthly resume of all that is new, bright and interesting on the boards.

  • Australian Radio's Relationshop with Youth
Frequently Modulating: Australian radio’s relationship with youth Chris K Wilson Submitted in total fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Swinburne Institute for Social Research Swinburne University of Technology 2015 Abstract In the mid-2000s the radio dial in each of Australia’s mainland state capitals was home to three stations either purporting to service youth or widely described as doing so. This was remarkable given the federal government maintained a conservative approach to the management of broadcast spectrum at this time and a range of interests competed for its use. Furthermore, each of the three youth stations operating in the mainland state capitals at this time were licensed in separate broadcasting sectors, complicating the notion that these commercial, national and community sectors addressed distinct objectives. This thesis examines how this settlement was reached—how mainland state capital radio came to include an outlet of the national broadcaster’s Triple J youth network, a youth community broadcaster, and Nova FM, a commercial station widely described as youth radio when it emerged in the 2000s. In accounting for the development of this settlement, the thesis focuses on the intersection of technical affordances, including technological, legislative and regulatory conditions that govern the use of radio spectrum, and the discursive formulation of rationales that made it possible to conceive of a specific relationship between radio broadcasting and youth and established the desirability of maintaining this relationship. The thesis draws on a range of empirical material to trace the historical lineage of these technical and discursive underpinnings, resulting in both an historical explanation of the broadcasting settlement of the 2000s and a history of the frequently modulating relationship between Australia radio and youth.
