GUIDE TO THE 1964 ERNEST BRADBURY ARCHIVE

Without wishing to seem prejudiced about individual years in this archive, I hope it is permissible to observe that reading this year’s has given particular pleasure and I commend it to readers as a vintage year in the annals o f Ernest Bradbury’s writings. As I gather the cuttings together the eye falls again on the Music and Musicians weekly articles and, again at the risk o f making invidious comparisons, on that published on 10th November.

As usual, notices from the Edinburgh Festival not referring to music have not been annotated but simply inserted at the back o f the cuttings. As usual, the abbreviations for Music and Musicians and Recent Records appear as M M and RR. These articles appear after the reviews in a given month, Music and Musicians first, then Recent Records. Unless otherwise stated all articles were published in The Yorkshire Post.

A t the time o f writing I have inserted carbon copies o f the following, but by the time you read this the Brotherton will hopefully have provided photocopies of the original published articles. They are: M M 7th July (Opera for the Provinces; M M 11th August; 20th October. R R for 1st August; and two reviews o f the Festival on 22nd April.

Editionising can mean that articles appear on different pages in the Yorkshire Post, or even not at all. Having neither carbons nor cuttings I hope that again, by the time you read this, the Brotherton may have provided photocopies o f the following:- 23rd January (Magnetic CaUas, Puccini’s Tosca reviewed at Covent- Garden-on- page 5); 23rd March page 8 The Private Kind of Music Making (Schubert, Bartók & Beethoven); 14th May page 5-The-Confused Idiom-of Martinu(Rawsthorne, Bloch, Martinu, Shostakovich); and 9th September page 5 Oratorio has Night as Theme (review of Milner’s The Water & the Fire, Three Choirs)). Please note that none of these -fotH^has been annotated in the reference sheets. It is also hoped to be able to locate a copy o f the programme book for the Leeds Festival 1964 as this contains an article by Er nest Bradbury (The Future o f Music in Leeds) which has also not been annotated in the reference sheets.

Deciding whether to put a reference under a composer’s name or in the Miscellaneous sheets (which are listed chronologically and not alphabetically) has posed a problem but by searching both it will hopefully be resolved. X Once again, for omissions and errors, I offer my apologies.
