Thank you for ―putting up‖ with me, and ―all Vietnam, all the time.‖ Finally, I want to recognize all who endured the war as well as their families and those among them who chose to share their memories through representation and silence. v Abstract ―Beyond the Battlefield: Direct and Prosthetic Memory of the American War in Viet Nam‖ examines shifts in American, Viet Namese, and Philippine memorial, literary, and cinematic remembrance of the war through the cultural lenses of later wars: the Gulf War (1990-1991) and the ―War on Terror‖ that began in 2001. As opposed to earlier portrayals of the American War in Viet Nam (1964-1975), turn-to-the-twenty-first-century representations engage in an ever-broadening collected cultural memory—a compilation of multifaceted, sometimes competing, individual and group memories—of the war. ―Beyond the Battlefield‖ begins with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1982) because it serves as the impetus for active participation in the reception and creation of memory. It traces a multifaceted collected cultural memory pattern through the stages of recognition for servicewomen, American women, Viet Namese Women, and reconciliation between soldiers and civilians as well as between Americans and the Viet Namese—veterans and civilians alike. Ultimately, a collected cultural memory of the war encourages prosthetic memory— memories of the war acquired via mediated representation by those with no direct experience in or hereditary connection to the war. Prosthetic memory permits an ongoing memory of the war that refuses to relegate the war to the forgotten past. vi A Note on Nomenclature ―Vietnam‖ is an American term used in the United States, and elsewhere, to signify an American ―experience.‖ However, most Viet Namese words have one syllable. Therefore, the name of the country is not ―Vietnam,‖ but Viet Nam according to appropriate bifurcated rendering. For all words—places, names, groups, organizations, and memorials—I adopt the usage appropriate to their language of origin. Therefore, because they are American terms, ―Vietnam Veterans Memorial,‖ ―Vietnam Women‘s Memorial,‖ ―Vietnam veterans‖ and all other American titles of American memorials, groups, and organizations appear in the fused American spelling. For most Viet Namese cities and place names, save the most recognizable, Saigon and Hanoi, I employ the Viet Namese syllabic divisions. The choice is not merely a matter of syntax; it is also political. Viet Nam is more than a war; it is a country. Thus what is commonly known in America as the ―Vietnam War,‖ and in Viet Nam, the ―American War,‖ is designated throughout the dissertation as ―the American War in Viet Nam.‖ Moreover, Viet Nam has experienced and engaged in many wars.     Coping Strategies: Three Decades of Vietnam War in Hollywood EUSEBIO V. LLÁCER ESTHER ENJUTO The Vietnam War represents a crucial moment in U.S. contemporary history and has given rise to the conflict which has so intensively motivated the American film industry. Although some Vietnam movies were produced during the conflict, this article will concentrate on the ones filmed once the war was over. It has been since the end of the war that the subject has become one of Hollywood's best-sellers. Apocalypse Now, The Return, The Deer Hunter, Rambo or Platoon are some of the titles that have created so much controversy as well as related essays. This renaissance has risen along with both the electoral success of the conservative party, in the late seventies, and a change of attitude in American society toward the recently ended conflict. Is this a mere coincidence? How did society react to the war? Do Hollywood movies affect public opinion or vice versa? These are some of the questions that have inspired this article, which will concentrate on the analysis of popular films, devoting a very brief space to marginal cinema. However, a general overview of the conflict it self and its repercussions, not only in the soldiers but in the civilians back in the United States, must be given in order to comprehend the between and the beyond the lines of the films about Vietnam. The vision that drives this inexorably forward is to generate creativity by presenting and commissioning challenging work, and bringing artists together with their audience. This spring brings an exciting multi-faceted project with exhibiting artist Holly Andres, made possible with the support of the Pleiades Foundation. Andres will travel from her current home 02 in Portland, OR, to her original home of Missoula for a week-long residency, creating a wide range of opportunities for her to interact with museum visitors and the University community. Andres will be presented at MAM with an opening reception, gallery talk, and a distinguished artist lecture co-sponsored by the University of Montana Jim and Jane Dew Visiting Artist Lecture Fund, and will visit with UM art classes. The residency will culminate with the commission of a one-of-a kind Missoula-oriented artwork that will become part of MAM’s Permanent Collection. MAM will have the opportunity to collect additional artwork from Andres’ exhibit with the collaboration and support of the Contemporary Collector’s Circle, MAM’s collection support group whose dues are devoted exclusively to acquisitions to the collection. Finally, by adding these artworks to the three Andres photographs and two video artworks already in the collection, MAM will circulate a traveling exhibit to expose the work to audiences across Montana through the Montana Art Gallery Directors Association.
