‘A Man of Courage and Activity’: Thomas Tew and Pirate Settlements of the Indo - Atlantic Trade World, 1645 -1730 1 Kevin McDonald Department of History University of California, Santa Cruz “The sea is everything it is said to be: it provides unity, transport , the means of exchange and intercourse, if man is prepared to make an effort and pay a price.” – Fernand Braudel In the summer of 1694, Thomas Tew, an infamous Anglo -American pirate, was observed riding comfortably in the open coach of New York’s only six -horse carriage with Benjamin Fletcher, the colonel -governor of the colony. 2 Throughout the far -flung English empire, especially during the seventeenth century, associations between colonial administrators and pirates were de rig ueur, and in this regard , New York was similar to many of her sister colonies. In the developing Atlantic world, pirates were often commissioned as privateers and functioned both as a first line of defense against seaborne attack from imperial foes and as essential economic contributors in the oft -depressed colonies. In the latter half of the seventeenth century, moreover, colonial pirates and privateers became important transcultural brokers in the Indian Ocean region, spanning the globe to form an Indo-Atlantic trade network be tween North America and Madagascar. Narratives of the Literary Island: European Poetics of the Social System after 1945 Ioana Andreescu Abstract In European post-war literature, the topos of the island takes centre stage, as the insular space often narrates a micro-scale society and the reconstruction of its social system. Isolation, semantically derived from ‘island’, characterises a European society radically transformed by the traumatic violence of the twentieth century. In this context, Robinson Crusoe—the ‘rational adult white man’—is recreated and reinvented in a multitude of new meanings, newly significant for understanding a transformed (and in-transformation) European society: he is cruel, he is afraid, he is a child, he is a woman, he is alone among others. The hypothesis of this paper is that the interest in and updating of Robinson Crusoe’s story transform this narrative into a literary myth, invested via intertextual and palimpsestic approaches with “a programme of truth” (Veyne 1983) that reveals a continuous interest in an alternative social system, which is in-the-making, historically, socially, psychologically, geopolitically, and so on. The literary post-war island narratives considered here, The Magus (1965) by John Fowles and Friday, or, the Other Island (1967) by Michel Tournier, highlight the process of the rewriting and rescaling of European history, as well as the essential need for human values in the creation of a society that has economics at its core. Daniel Defoe’s Moral and Political Thought in Its Religious Context Chienyuen Chen PhD Thesis The University of Edinburgh 2019 2 Abstract This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the religious ideas of the famous English journalist and novelist Daniel Defoe. Today, Defoe is best remembered as a novelist, but most of his works are non-fictional works including a sizable number of didactic or supernatural writings. Even though there is a rising scholarly interest in Defoe’s thoughts on subjects such as politics or Puritanism, there is hardly a single monograph devoted to Defoe’s religious ideas. This thesis aims to fill the gap by examining Defoe’s works throughout his career. It demonstrates that Defoe’s Presbyterian upbringing was influential in his emphasis on the ideas of good work, practical godliness, and the development of good habits. -
Daniel Defoe Was Born Is Presumed to Have Been Born in the Fall of 1660
Chapter 1 London’s Birchin Lane is a short and narrow street, running north-south between the larger Cornhill and Lombard streets. Known in the Middle Ages for its collection of secondhand clothing shops, it eventually became home to several fine men’s clothiers, a destination where men of distinction could pick up something special: a whalebone doublet, perhaps, or a “captain’s suit . stuffed with points, and a pair of velvet slops scored thick with lace.” By the 18th century, it was also home to Old Tom’s Coffee House, which would gain fame by the end of the century for being a hangout of the famous Shakespearean actor, David Garrick. But in 1729, it hosted a no less interesting figure, the rather curious and shadowy Robert Drury. Across town, the famous author Daniel Defoe, widely considered the inventor of the realistic or historical novel, and working under the alias Andrew Moreton Esq., toils over what will be his final work, Second Thoughts Are Best: or, a Further Improvement of a Late Scheme to Prevent Street Robberies. Drury’s story was precisely of the type that most appealed to Defoe and, considering the proximity, there’s little doubt that the famous author had already paid Drury a visit well before his residency at Old Tom’s. * * * Now forty-two years old, Drury sits in Old Tom’s with a mug of coffee, a pile of books on the table in front of him. It’s a closed-in place, full of chatter, laughter, and barracking. Men sip coffee and read their expensive newspapers or listen for fresh news coming up from the boys sent to the docks for that purpose. -

Blewett NUMBER OF PAGES: V, 83 ii Abstract In his Consolidator, Defoe, like many seventeenth and eighteenth-century writers, ridicules the natural sciences of the day. His attack on the sciences, however, is ironic. Contemporary religion and politics, and not science, are the princip~l objec~s of hi~ s~tire. D~fQe's o~t~n$ipl~ attack on the sciences is in fact directly related to, and a significant component of, his comments on the religious and political controversies of his day. This thesis seeks to illustrate how sections of The Consolidator parody the language of 'contemporary philo sophical transactions, and how this parody contributes to Defoe's social satire. The Introduction to the thesis provides a brief survey of the critical attention paid to Defoe's relationship with the "new sciences." Chapter One discusses Defoe's use of irony in his attack on the sciences, and illustrates how specific sections of The Consolidator parody contemporary scientific writing. Chapter Two relates this parody to Defoe's political satire, and Chapter Three relates it to his religious satire. -

Emphasis DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1015187ar is placed on how “island TV” employed a television aesthetic that ranged from an earlier conventional approach, using three cameras, studio locations, and See table of contents narrative resolution in each episode, to open-ended storylines employing a cinematic style that exploits the new generation of widescreen televisions, especially with the advent of HDTV. Two case studies centre the argument: Gilligan’s Island as an example of the former, more conventional aesthetic, and Publisher(s) Lost as an example of the new approach. Although both series became Cinémas exceedingly popular, other notable programs are considered, two of which involved Canadian production teams: Swiss Family Robinson and The Mysterious Island.
