Monmouth MS Principal Melissa Burnham Barter’s report follows.

Total Enrollment = 234 as of 4/24/19: Gr. 4 = 43; Gr. 5 = 45; Gr. 6 = 55; Gr. 7 = 48; Gr. 8 = 43

Vex Robotics Four students representing our Vex Robotics team traveled to the 2019 Vex Robotics World Competition in Louisville, Kentucky.

Seminar Seminar continues to be successful with grades 6-8. We are exploring scheduling options for 4-5 common block/seminar times as well as online and independent options for grades 6-8. Most recently, we have several students who will take an online coding course and a group who self-designed a seminar where they will produce a weekly podcast for the school.

Mini-Dempsey Challenge

Our student government planned and executed a “Mini-Dempsey” Challenge to raise money for the Dempsey foundation. All students in grades 4-5 participated in a 1-mile walk/fun run and raised over $4,100.

As a follow-up and incentive for their fundraiser, the student government is planning a field day in June. As part of this event, students who raised at least $10 will get a ticket to a raffle. Raffle winners will get to “pie” a staff member.

Community Service Day We had to reschedule our annual fall community service day due to weather conditions and have planned it for May 16th. We will send some students to Mechuwana camp in Winthrop and others to clean local trails. Most of our students will help out local community members and groups.

Weather at Your School We will host WMTW (Channel 8)’s Weather at Your School on May 23rd. Meteorologist Ted McInerney will be broadcasting from MMS beginning at 5:45AM. The live broadcast will air every 10 minutes until 6:45, with segments including students who wish to be involved.

Monmouth Music Our MMS musicians will participate in a pre-game parade and sing the National Anthem during Monmouth Day at the . We recently celebrated Most Improved Students at our April Positive Recognition Ceremony and these individuals will also be recognized on this date. We will host a 5-12 band concert and 4-12 chorus concert this spring to incorporate musicians of all ages in each area.

Celebration Night MMS welcomed the community into the building for Celebration Night. In addition to student learning and achievements on display for families and friends to celebrate, student demonstrations and presentations included: music by MMS musicians; a teacher-

themed and student-designed game of CLUE; Cinco de Mayo dancing demonstrations; a corn-hole tournament; and demonstrations in art, 3-D printing, and Vex Robotics.

Fourth Grade Cornhole Sponsored by our PTO, fourth graders learning about goods and services traveled to research local (Knowles Lumber) vs. big box (Lowe’s) options for purchasing materials to make a corn-hole game. They chose to support the local business and built and painted corn-hole sets. One set was used for a tournament on celebration night and the other was raffled off. The students planned to donate the money toward a greenhouse fund they hope will support a future greenhouse at their new school.

Monmouth Memorial School We have enjoyed watching the new school as it is built across the street. Recently they began constructing the gymnasium and we have been working with on design elements with architects, furniture and the middle school science labs.

Monmouth Academy Principal Rick Amero’s report follows.

First, I apologize that I cannot attend this evening’s Board meeting. I will be attending the Mountain Valley Conference Honors Banquet where we will honor our Summa Cum Laude Seniors from the Class of 2019.

Learning Initiatives

Learning Teams – Under the leadership of Keith Morang, Learning Teams have been implemented to assist any learner who appears to be experiencing academic difficulty in multiple classes. The Behind Pace List is one tool used to identify learners, but any teacher can call a meeting with other teachers to discuss a learner and develop common strategies that all teachers will use to assist that learner. Keith and Brian Snedeker have served as facilitators for these meetings. To date, Learning Teams have had a positive impact on over fourteen learners this school year.

Executive Functioning Skills –Since the beginning of this school year, special emphasis has been placed on assisting learners who have deficits in executive functioning skills. Over the years, a learner may have been deemed as “not trying” when actually the learner lacked the executive functioning skills to be successful (i.e. self-initiation skills, organizational skills, breaking tasks down, etc.). High quality posters that outline executive functioning skills were produced and are displayed in all classrooms to keep these skills in the forefront of learners and teachers’ minds. In November, Stephanie Hogan, from Waynflete School, presented to our staff on how to teach executive functioning skills. In addition, learners have participated in lessons during advisory on topics such as time management.

Gaps in Foundational Skills and Knowledge – As mentioned in my January report, we continue to make system-wide and individual adjustments based on data in order to best meet the academic needs of our learners. This data includes performance on prior learning targets, NWEA scores, and perhaps most importantly, current pre-assessments on prior skills and knowledge. We continue to discover that many of our learners enter high school with significant gaps in their skills and knowledge and/or are considerably behind levels (i.e. entering 9th grade but working on Level 7 math, Level 7 ELA, Step 4 writing, etc.). We continue to re-teach, group and regroup, change learner’s individual

daily schedules, and provide additional support and necessary resources to tackle high school-level learning targets. Our teaching team and I remain concerned with how this will affect individual learner’s upper level academic opportunities (CATC, dual enrollment courses, upper-level electives, etc., as well as post-secondary options) if they are to graduate in the “traditional” four years.

Habits of Work – Throughout this school year, M.A. has been piloting assessing Habits of Work (HOW). Learners, parents and teachers all desire an accountability piece in regard to learners being prepared for class, ready to take assessments, and having material done by the due date. During the first semester learners evaluated themselves weekly on the HOW in each of their classes, then their teacher would view how they scored themselves, and if they disagreed with their score, they would meet with the learner to discuss and assign a different score.

We discovered that this process was taking teachers approximately 75 minutes each week and that learners grew tired of self-assessing on a weekly basis. During the second semester, teachers are assigning HOW scores to each learner each week. At the present time, HOW scores, in addition to the behind-pace list, are used to provide incentives for learners. Learners can gain senior privileges, junior privileges (also need a cumulative GPA of a 3.5) and lounge study halls. As we continue to refine and norm HOW scores, these may become part of our athletic eligibility policy and information that we provide to parents on a regular basis.

Applied Learning and M.A.’s One Big Week – Prior to RSU 2, MOBY and Sophomore Awareness were part of M.A.’s budget. In particular, transportation was budgeted for both of these applied learning programs. Since the RSU, M.A. has earmarked funds from its instructional line to help support (not fully fund) these programs. Fortunately, through the generous funding of the MELMAC Foundation grants that Monmouth Academy was awarded over the past decade, we were able to provide a “Big Week” experience for all grade levels (MOBY, Sophomore Awareness, Junior College Visits and Senior Skills). Unfortunately, MELMAC is not presently funding this grant as it continues a visioning process to determine what it will fund in the future.

Our teaching team and I believe that MOBY and Sophomore Awareness are integral parts of our curriculum and provide tremendous applied learning experiences to our learners. At the present time we are seeking funding sources to continue both of these programs; however we will not have a One Big Week because we will not be able to fund the junior and senior programs. MOBY will take place September 16th – 20th and Sophomore Awareness October 1st - October 4th (pending Camp Androscoggin’s availability). M.A. will continue to participate in the United Way Day of Caring on September 20.

Winter Athletics

Our girls and boys teams qualified for the Southern Class C Basketball tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals. The cheerleading team qualified for the state championship, the Cony/MA/HD hockey team lost in the Class A quarterfinals, Kyle Gunnells finished 7th in the State Nordic Ski Championship, and Breeanna Cameron finished 2nd in the Maine State Girls Wrestling Championship.

Academic Competitions

Our academic teams continued their tradition of excellence. Academic Decathlon finished as Maine State Runners-up; Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) finished 2nd in the State; drama performed Radium Girls and finished 4th in the Class B Regional One-Act Festival; Math Team finished 6th in the State Competition in Division D; and Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) students had outstanding performances at the Career Development Conference/Competition. The Environthon Team is busy preparing for the regional competition to be held on May 7.

Under the direction of Mr. Seth Mitchell, Monmouth hosted its first ever VEX Robotics Competition. Jacob Umberhind, Ben Hamann and Dalton Delorme qualified for the VEX Robotics Team State Championship.

At the State FBLA Conference three sophomores were elected Maine FBLA State Officers: Lydia Roy, Historian; Grace Vierling, Secretary; and Rhayna Poulin, Parliamentarian.

Spencer Richardson earned silver place in Carpentry and Joe Beaulieu earned bronze place in Computer Applications in the Skills USA State Championship.

Other Happenings at M.A.

Pat Amero, M.A. Guidance Secretary, organized the 19th Annual Valentine’s Tea, which hosted over twenty-five Monmouth senior citizens. Our guests enjoyed coming together and spending time with our students and listening to the M.A. Chorus. Thank you to Bangor Savings Bank, Monmouth Federal Credit Union, The Vestry Thrift Store, and Apple Valley Bakery for sponsoring this wonderful event.

Beth Luce arranged a Choices Matter presentation for all M.A. students and staff. Ms. Bailey Wind shared her personal story and powerful message. In high school, Bailey was traveling with four of her friends when a driver of another vehicle, who was intoxicated and texting, crashed into their vehicle. Two of her friends were instantly killed, and she sustained life-threatening injuries. In addition to her powerful message, Choices Matter also provided hands-on simulations for students (goggles that simulated being under the influence, video driving, etc.).

On April 4, M.A. hosted Learner/Parent/Teacher Spring Conferences. These were well attended by both parents and learners.

Senior Trevor Flanagan was awarded the Maine Principals’ Association Award, which is given in recognition of a high school Senior’s academic achievement, leadership and citizenship. Trevor and Principal Amero attended the MPA Awards Luncheon on April 6.

On April 9, all of our juniors took the Scholastic Aptitude Assessment (SAT), and that same day all of our freshmen and sophomores all took the PSAT. Sarah Knowlton, M.A.’s College and Career Coordinator, once again did an incredible job organizing and administering this massive undertaking. This year, Liz Ross did a great job assisting Sarah. Also on that day, Laura Theriault organized a fantastic learning experience for our seniors, who visited and analyzed art at the Hudson Museum and the Page Museum in Orono.

We continue to assist our learners in discovering career opportunities in the skilled labor fields. Once again this year we have taken learners to Cianbro in Pittsfield, MEMA Technical School in Brunswick, and the Skills Craft Fair at the Augusta Civic Center. In addition, through our Jobs for Maine Graduates program, Crooker Construction as well as a representative from the Air Force Community College have presented on our campus.

Class of 2019 Summa Cum Laude – Benjamin Brooks, Kayla Brooks, Kaeti Butterfield, Morgan Crocker, Abby Ferland, Trevor Flanagan, Mariah Herr, Emily Kaplan, Luke Martin, Elizabeth Mason, Spencer Richardson, McKenzie Stevens, Grace Therriault and Anna Van Valkenburgh.

Many of our seniors are in awe in regard to how quickly their year has passed, and they are getting excited for their upcoming graduation ceremonies (Senior Stroll, Senior Reception, Class Day and Graduation). The Class of 2019 will mark the 215th class to graduate from Monmouth Academy.

On M.A.’s Facebook page (Rick Maroon) each senior’s acceptance to a post-secondary program has been posted. When seniors make other commitments (i.e. enlisting in the armed forces, an apprenticeship, a full-time job, etc.) these will be posted as well.

As of April 18, members of the Class of 2019 have been officially accepted to the following post-secondary colleges and universities (acceptance letter on file with our guidance office):

Anna Maria College Roanoke College Becker College Roberts Wesleyan College Berklee College of Music Salem State University Bridgewater State University Saint Joseph's College (Maine) Central Maine Community College Thomas College Champlain College Unity College Eastern Maine Community College University of New England Emmanuel College University of Maine Husson University University of Maine at Augusta Indiana University of Pennsylvania University of Maine at Farmington Ithica College University of Maine at Machias Johnson & Wales University University of Maine Presque Isle Keene State College University of Massachusetts at Amherst Kennebec Valley Community College University of Southern Maine Lasell College University of New Hampshire Lesley University Wentworth Institute of Technology

Arguably, May and June are the busiest times of the school year, but also ones filled with positive emotion and excitement. We are looking forward to inducting new members into the M.A. chapter of the National Honor Society, hosting a safe and enjoyable prom, being entertained at the last choral and band concerts of the year, viewing incredible creations at the art show, honoring the Class of 2019, and welcoming the members of the Class of 2023 and their parents at freshmen orientation.

In closing, our learners, teachers, staff and administrators are fortunate to benefit from an outstanding community that supports M.A. throughout the year. We are thankful for the support we receive from this Board, parents, alumni, retired teachers and administrators, and citizens of Monmouth. Collectively, all of us desire to provide the best education and educationally experiences for each of our learners.

1. Approval of last meeting’s minutes

Chrissy Michaud recommended approval of the last meeting’s minutes and the committee approved.

2. Results of the wellness survey & picking students who will receive incentive for participating

McKenzie Stevens was absent for the reading of the survey sent out to all students grades 7-12, and choosing students who will receive the incentive for doing the survey. The committee moved this discussion to the May 8th meeting.

3. New business

Nan Bell reported she is still trying to recruit more 5210 Champions for each building. She did mention that Stephanie Beale is a Champion for Hall-Dale Elementary School as well as Carolee Shepherd, who runs the after school and summer program at Hall-Dale Elementary School. Chrissy gave Nan some suggestions for the H. L. Cottrell Elementary School. Nan will follow up.

Nan talked about a State-wide survey that will go out April 22nd to all school level Champions put out by 5210. It helps gather information about nutrition, childhood obesity and activity throughout each particular school state wide. The survey asks what each school or district is doing in regard to the 5210 program as well. Once the survey has gathered information, they will send out the results of each category so we can all see the results from each school and the state over all. Chrissy and Nan talked about what Food Service is doing in regard to 5210, for example, the Cooking for Kids with Kids class, The Nutrition Nuggets Newsletter that gets sent out to all elementary school students monthly, taste testing at all schools, and catering for classroom parties or events with nutritious meals or snacks. Nan was happy to know what Food Service has in place. She remarked that we need to get that information out to the community and parents, raising awareness about better choices with nutrition and physical education and she asked how we should go about getting that out. Chrissy mentioned some of the craft fairs and possibly setting up a booth, and talking to the PTO’s for each school.

Nan talked about a training she will do with all Food Service staff and what day. She also mentioned possibly talking to all staff or sending out an informational packet for the first day of school to go home with students for families.

Chrissy and Pat Marshall talked about our next meeting and what we should do about getting our members of the committee interested in attending, possibly adding members, and maybe choosing the dates for next year at our next meeting (earlier time or later time?). Nan asked if there was a meeting with all staff at the beginning of the year. If so, that would be a great time to talk about the program and hopefully we can get more people interested. She would be willing to come and talk about 5210 Let’s Go. Maybe some are not interested, thinking that they have to do more, when in all actuality, it is just highlighting what we are already doing.
