Ashley E. Hunt ^^L The oldest continuously published newspaper in Bulloch County Thursday, February 22,1996 News Editor Opinions Our Opinion Buchanan's rise in the primaries is dangerous The fact that the ultra-conservative Pat Buchanan is leading in the polls should be enough to scare any freedom-loving American. Buchanan's extreme right politics could be enough to send this country back into the Dark'Ages. For Buchanan, there seems to be no gray area on any social issue. For him, something is completely right or completely wrong for everyone with no exceptions. Buchanan opposes abortion unilaterally and unequivocally. He apparently wants to break down the wall between church and state as he endorses public schools teaching the Old and the New Testaments and allowing parents to decide whether or not their children are taught that "godless evolution." The separation between church and state was established to uphold freedom of religion and to protect religious minorities from persecution. Perhaps someone should tell Buchanan that America is not comprised entirely of Christians. When CNN asked Buchanan about the possibility of appointing homosexuals to his Cabinet, he said that he would have "no hesitation" working with closeted gays, Tragedy brings new perspectives on society but believed that openly gay people would "discredit the Waiting until the last minute tually, I don't have a clue if he administration." before a deadline is nothing new even believed in God.
