I've been afraid to try and pull it off, but it's definitely not just held there by shrink wrap. Stephen Walby, a quiet and introspective young man, has spent his entire life exploring the local moor and writes articles on its ecology for a provincial newspaper. His primary source of income is as a furniture restorer where he works with his embittered father. Stephen's mother deserted both of them many years before, and the trauma of that experience stills haunts him as an adult. After meeting and conversing with a beautiful blonde artist working on the moors, he subsequently discovers her brutally murdered body. Written by duke aol. This TV adaptation, airing around the same time as Rendell's Wexford tales, was extremely strange and atmospheric, centring on the murder of a number of blonde women on the wild moors. Colin Firth - pre-Darcy fame - is Stephen Whalby, a loner who often takes long walks on the moor. His wife, Lyn Emma Croft is long-suffering and something of a doormat. When the murders start to happen Stephen is the one who finds the bodies. Quickly the police led by Manciple, George Costigan start to regard him as a suspect, but can Whalby convince them of the truth? With twists and turns you might not see coming, this was a superior piece of TV drama. It kept up the tension throughout its 2 or 3 episodes, and kept the viewer guessing. The song changes as it progresses, keeping it interesting. Another great moment on the album. Near the end of the album now we reach Living the Lie which showcases the bands talent in forming a classic heavy metal song, with Dio singing above the band with ease whilst the rest of the band showcase their individual skills, with the guitar in particular once again showing of his skills with a fast catchy riff and a well formed guitar solo. Reaching the last three songs now we start with I Am which, while not as good as some of the other tracks, is still worth a listen to, with a steady riff and an full chorus it is what fans enjoy hearing from a Dio song, but not quite as enjoyable as some of the others. Penultimate song Death by Love brings you back up, with a strong riff and a catchy verse with lyrics about gypsy queens this is classic Dio, this harkens back to with the sound that is formed, this is a very enjoyable song. Now we reach the end of the album, ending with In Dreams opening with a heavier riff than the last, it is also more technical. The song is very good, with a sound that is different to any of the others on the album, with a pounding yet technical riff, and an odd vocal line and lyrical structure it remains enjoyable. A very good end to the album. So here it is, the last album from Dio, his parting gift. And it is a very good album, full of great metal songs. Dios vocals on the album remain as strong as they ever were, demonstrating why he was such a respected singer, the band as well are good, with the guitar in particular demonstrating skill and many great solos. Whilst not living up to such as Holy Diver it is a worthy last outing by one of metals great voices. Tweet Recent reviews by this author. Nachtmystium Resilient. Mayhem Esoteric Warfare. I'm enjoying this series. Llyr's an egotistical ass, but only a little bit of a time. I guess that's what you get when you have been king for over a thousand years. But I loved how Diana wasn't going to bow down to him. She gives as good as she gets and she's determined to help her people and get rid of the threat against them. Sure she's a lowly human, granted one with who's also a werewolf, but the humans in her town don't deserve what's happening to them. It's outside the realm of their under I'm enjoying this series. It's outside the realm of their understanding. I enjoyed Diana and Llyr's battle of wits and her determination. I felt for Llyr too and all he's lost over the centuries at the hands of his brother. It's a pretty rough story for Llyr. Things haven't gone his way in a long time, but they're finally coming to a head. I'm looking forward to continuing this series, especially now that we have all three elements out there, the Magi, the Direkind, and the Fae. I tried book 2 because it was supposed to be better than book 1. It wasn't really, so I think I'm dunzo. My favorite term is in this book: ex-Marine. Fortunately, it only appears once and the book itself intrigued me enough to give it another chance. Unfortunately, the book lost me to something else shortly thereafter. The main problem I have is that the story is a near complete carbon copy of Jane's Warlord , with a few things changed. I liked JW. I don't need a reworked version with fairies, werewolves, vampires, and magic. This on My favorite term is in this book: ex-Marine. This one became a skim read and a serious disappointment for me. Apr 17, Gina rated it it was amazing. Unbelievably awesome! AK knows her stuff. Erotic and funny, the plot doesn't need twists as suspenses and mysteries do. The characters colouful, the action terrifically written, and the erotic scenes will make you blush if you're a blusher! Master of Wolves is next, and I can't wait to read it. I hope AK writes a heck of a lot more of the Megaverse series. An awesome story-teller, AK's writing style is easy to read. If you haven't read this series, you don't know what you're missing! At least there are vampires, werewolves and a vengeful spiteful brother feud to flesh it out. I can honestly say that although this book is not going to win any prices for the most in-depth thought provoking book, it was fun. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Retrieved August 18, Retrieved February 1, Rolling Stone. Retrieved March 26, GfK Entertainment Charts. Retrieved March 27, Hung Medien. Retrieved April 4, The lyrics also provide some nice moments of duality and appear to be more topical than previous efforts. While songs such as "End Of The World" and "In Dreams" are driven by bits of cynicism, there are some moments of determination in "I Am" and the title track. I think "One More For The Road" makes for a particularly blistering opener though I also appreciate "Shivers" and "The Eyes" for the former's driving riff and the latter's spooky guitar effects. Of course, this album isn't entirely perfect. While the first half is mostly strong, the second half seems weaker with some songs like "I Am" and "In Dreams" coming off as slight filler. It's also another one of those albums that may get crap for being slower, but people should really be used to it at this point Definitely worth checking out though it may be a little slow Master of the Moon is certainly a step up from Killing The Dragon in quality and songwriting even boasting a few progressive metal moments. Dio decided to bring some older ideas to the table this time around mainly the much more doom metal oriented tempo and atmosphere. Guitar work is also less of a focus, instead repeating slow-tempo and mid-tempo riffs drag the album along literally. The songs themselves are filled with a heavier keyboard use than on any other Dio release. Most of the songs are solid unlike Killing The Dragon which had some really good standouts but a lot of throw away songs. bass is very audible considering the songs have a very low end bass feel to them. Master of the Moon does have some big problems mainly in the enjoy ability factor. While most of the songs are entertaining they also repeat themselves to much and lack that epic sound that Dio is known for. Finally no speed metal numbers are present which a disappointment is considering Dio always wrote strong speedy songs. I recommend this release only to diehard Dio fans and doom metal aficionados. The primary characteristic of doom metal that separates it from all the other genres in the metal umbrella is a combination of socially conscious lyrical pursuits and an emphasis on a slow, heavy, and atmospheric approach musically. In this respect, Dio has not been a consistently doom oriented band, but on this album they come closer than they ever have without sacrificing the quality of sound. If there is any real drawback in the approach taken on this album, it is the de-emphasis on the guitar as a lead instrument, something which is quite disappointing to me as is my favorite guitarist of all the ones Dio has worked with since Sabbath. Although mostly a slow and heavy album, Ronnie and the guys have not forgotten how to put out a couple of decent up tempo songs. Most of the remaining tracks on here are doom oriented. The real standouts on this album are the remaining songs on here. The effects on the lead guitar sounds almost like a person nervously trying to form words to articulate the sense of paranoia found in the lyrics. If he wishes to imply that electing John Kerry, Ralph Nader or some wacko Green party guy would make things any better, I am afraid I may have under-estimated his mind. In conclusion, pretty good album, although not quite up to the same caliber as his last two. Lyrically it is quite an interesting listen, although it is a tiny bit lacking in the riffs department and it is quite slow compared to your average metal album. Dio is like a machine going on for eternity, ever releasing records, ever singing like a god with built-in speakers and double amps. Master of the Moon is his best album for a long, long time and while it's not better than the debut and just questionably better than Last in Line, it's the release that's hardest to grow tired of. We miss the usual highlight which has become synonymous with the title track , but then there have never been so few and so small fluctuations in quality between the songs before. The sound feels like Strange Highways revisited, compared to Killing the Dragon the music is much slower, darker and heavier. He makes the guitar sound stay dark and heavy; yet let it change forms over the songs. It goes through the full scale from raw and menacing to somber and thoughtfully pondering to exploring, searching and feeling. The tapping solos are simpler than what he uses to do, but oh, boy do they fit. The songs end slowly, fading away, keeping their punchiness, heaviness and catchiness all the way to the end. Instead we get what might be one of his best performances. We get the best range and power that metal can offer packaged in that tiny body. Many have called Master of the Moon a doom metal album. Even End of the World, which basically deals with the doomsday, is more about sadness and fright than the final fall of the Earth. I like it. Whereas none of the songs will ever take the titles away from Holy Diver, Last in Line, and so on, the album still is more quality-work than any of his earlier records. They just happened to be this time. I can spin this cutie an infinite number of times. Master of the Moon. A come back for Dio? No, seeing as how he is still up there in the metal world, and that he never has come down. Master of the Moon is a good album nonetheless. It seems as though Dio has gone back to his Doom side, which explains why most of the songs are slow. There are two types of guitar riffs on this album. The frist type is the slow, doom like kind. There are a couple of songs that are super slow. These are your typical doom metal songs. Slow, crunching riffs, that are filled with evil. The other type of guitar riff is a medium paced guitar riff. These riffs are crunched with some pretty cool palm muting. The Shiver displays this style the best. In fact, these three songs I have mentioned have some pretty memorable riffs. There are some other driving forces to this album. There are a lot of driving forces behind the bass guitar, some nice bass leads, and Pilson does what he does best —support the music. The drumming is well done, and so is the keyboards. The only time that the keyboards actually leaped out at me was in the song The Eye. It does this cool effect now and then in the song that gives it some more characterization. So If you like the slow, evil, doom metal style of Dio, or you just like Killing the Dragon, then you will enjoy this new piece of heavy metal. Yes, from the other two reviews you can probably tell that this album is goddamn slow. But Dio never did an entire album of "Stand Up And Shout"-type songs, there's always been your midtempo "Invisible" and "Shame On The Night" type songs, it's just that on this album these slower tunes are far more dominant than on Dio's classic material, and these songs are not quite as good as his mid tempo classics like think "" or "Egypt The Chains Are On ". This one's also quite heavily keyboard influenced, but it's for the most part used to quite good effect- see title track. The thing is, the guitarwork here is rather pathetic for the album of a Heavy Metal legend such as Ronnie James Dio. Many of the songs have a pretty solid base of guitar riffs and nothing that stands out as awkwardly bad, but nothing that blasts out and make you go "Fuck yeah, that's metal! The guitars mostly stay in the background and don't do much at all, and there certainly seems to be something lacking all through the album. Still, songs like "The End of the World" and "One More For The Road" has enough solid guitarwork to keep the song rocking, it just isn't enough to create any metal classics. That's pretty much what this is, just another metal record among them. Nothing groundbreaking, no modern classic, just another fun addition to your metal CD collection. I'd start with pointing out the definite highlights of the album. Two songs stand out above them all - First off, the rocking opening track "One More For The Road" is possibly the fastest song on here, catchy as hell, vintage Dio, with his classic powerful vocals delivering punchy, memorable vocal lines that stick easily to your mind. And the other standout being "I Am", a midtempo track with an overall great mood and the catchiest chorus on here, a blast to sing along to. Also, "Master of the Moon" is pretty fun. The opening is bizarre with a bunch of different effects before the song starts going into an odd heavily synthesized vers accompanied with Dio's as usual very good and insightful lyrics, and overall this song has a pretty cool atmosphere and is a real grower. So is the whole album, in fact, it's gotten alot better since my first listen. But still, a damn good song. There's quite a bunch of odd songs here, like the heavily synthesized "Shivers" and also "The Eyes", mostly remarkable for the bizarre and rather annoying guitar effects. Llyr and his evil brother Ansgar rule two fairy kingdoms. Ansgar has been attempting to assassinate Llyr for years. He killed Llyr's wives, children and others during that time. Llyr doesn't fight back because he's trying to play by the rules set by his father. Ansgar is not playing by the rules and nearly wins. Llyr should have fought fire with fire somehow. I felt he was too much of the helpless victim, not protecting himself or his people as he should have. Diana is a human who shifts into werewolf form and has enough power to fight fairies, vampires, etc. Ansgar sends a vampire to kill Llyr. Ansgar also causes Llyr to lose his magic powers. Diana protects Llyr and fights the vampire for him. She plays the alpha female, which was an enjoyable part of the story. They were brothers. He took away Llyr's powers and later Diana's. Llyr seemed a little too wimpy, helpless and victimized. When Diana was kidnapped by Ansgar, she too became a helpless victim. Yes, I've enjoyed other books with evil powerful people, but this didn't work as well for me. I'm having a hard time explaining why. Throughout the story I felt like "Oh, no, another bad thing is happening to them. Nothing good ever happens, even some of the local townspeople are causing difficulties for Diana in her job. An enemy guard was threatening Llyr. Hey, here's a thought. I'll eat the evidence. Number of sex scenes: twelve. Setting: small S. Carolina town, plus some back story from AD in the fairy kingdom.
